Capt. John Hatteras will stop at nothing to reach the North Pole. After having a steamship built for the purpose, he embarks for terra incognita. But when he encounters a frozen sea, mutiny and shipwreck leave Hatteras and his remaining crew stranded on an island in the harsh Arctic winter. Even in the face of death by starvation or polar bear attack, Hatteras knows that the sea must eventually thaw, opening a path to incredible discovery. First published in 1864, The Adventures of Captain Hatteras was written in two parts: The English at the North Pole and The Desert of Ice. It was later included in Jules Verne’s Extraordinary Voyages series, alongside Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days, and many others.

Despite the crew's mutiny costing their ship its life, Hatteras and a few other men continue the journey. He finds the wreckage of a ship from the previous American mission along the beach of the island known as ""New America."" Doctor Clawbonny remembers the design for the actual Ice palace, which was built entirely out of ice in Russia in 1740 to create a snow house where they were supposed to spend the winter. The travelers survive their winter on the island mostly because of Doctor Clawbonny's inventiveness. The water loses its ice after winter is over. The travelers construct a boat from the wreck and move in the direction of the pole. They find an island with an active volcano here and give it the name Hatteras. The gang locates a fjord with difficulty and makes landfall. They arrive at the volcano's mouth after three hours of climbing. Hatteras leaps into the crater where the pole is located precisely. The final sentence, ""Captain Hatteras ceaselessly marches northward,"" makes this clear.

Z., captain, Richard Shandon, mate, will clear from New Prince's Docks; destination unknown." This announcement appeared in the Liverpool Herald of April 5, 1860. The sailing of a brig is not a matter of great importance for the chief commercial city of England. Who would take notice of it in so great a throng of ships of all sizes and of every country, that dry-docks covering two leagues scarcely contain them? Nevertheless, from early morning on the 6th of April, a large crowd collected on the quays of the New Prince's Docks; all the sailors of the place seemed to have assembled there. The workingmen of the neighboring wharves had abandoned their tasks, tradesmen had left their gloomy shops, and the merchants their empty warehouses. The many-colored omnibuses which pass outside of the docks were discharging, every minute, their load of sight-seers; the whole city seemed to care for nothing except watching the departure of the Forward. The Forward was a vessel of one hundred and seventy tons, rigged as a brig, and carrying a screw and a steam-engine of one hundred and twenty horse-power. One would have very easily confounded it with the other brigs in the harbor. But if it presented no especial difference to the eye of the public, yet those who were familiar with ships noticed certain peculiarities which could not escape a sailor's keen glance.

The definitive version from 1866 was included into Voyages Extraordinaires series (The Extraordinary Voyages). Although it was the first book of the series it was labeled as number two. Three of Verne's books from 1863-65 (Five Weeks in a Balloon, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and From the Earth to the Moon) were added into the series retroactively. Captain Hatteras shows many similarities with British explorer John Franklin.

With a purpose built steamship he sets out on the greatest voyage of his life but when their fortunes turn, his crew mutinies, destroying their ship in the process. Stranded in the Arctic in winter, Hatteras with a small group of his remaining crew will push further in to the white waste, relying on their intuition and no small amount of luck to survive. What they find will leave them changed men forever. It is a gripping journey marked by Verne’s mastery of science fiction, creating a poignant and memorable conclusion for a brilliant character. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist, poet and playwright who is remembered for his significant contribution to the science fiction genre. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called "Extraordinary Travels", which includes "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873). Due to his incredible vision he is often given the moniker ‘The Father of Science Fiction’, shared with fellow science fiction author H.G. Wells. Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all time, second only to Agatha Christie and Shakespeare.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller imagines the life of Jules Verne in this “rollicking whopper of a novel [that] glides down smoothly” (Publishers Weekly). Captain Nemo is the fictional life story of one of Jules Verne’s most memorable characters from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island. This alternate history covers his boyhood friendship with the dreamer, Jules Verne, adventures aboard sailing ships, battles with pirates, and survival on a mysterious deserted island. Each time he returns home to his beloved France, Captain Nemo shares the tales of his exploits with the struggling writer Verne. We follow Nemo’s exploration of hidden caverns that lead to the center of the earth, travels across darkest Africa in a hydrogen balloon, and his imprisonment by an evil Ottoman caliph who commands the dark genius to construct a sub-marine boat, the Nautilus, in order to attack merchant ships that venture through the newly completed Suez Canal. “K. J. Anderson seamlessly blends events of Jules Verne’s real life with the plotlines of his fictional works. His portrayal of Verne is masterful: a man able to break free from the circumstances that stifle him through his vivid imagination and the inspiration provided by his lifelong friend, Nemo.” —Harry Turtledove, New York Times–bestselling author of The Guns of the South “A swashbuckling mix of Jules Verne, Daniel DeFoe, and Michael Crichton.” —Terry Brooks, New York Times–bestselling author of The Sword of Shannara

"The Desert of Ice" is the second part of Jules Verne’s novel "The Adventures of Captain Hatteras" from 1864. Captain Hatteras and his crew who have survived the long winter on island "New America" continue their expedition to the North Pole. They discover an island with an active volcano and it turns out that the exact location of the pole is in the crater. Is this the end to the long, difficult and dangerous expedition? If nobody survives how will the rest of the world learn about it? Is it possible that the Captain survives, and is the information he gained more important and valuable than his own health and well being? Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist who mostly wrote adventure fiction inspired by the scientific advances of the 19th century. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called "Extraordinary Travels", which includes "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873). There have been many film adaptations of Jules Verne’s books with the most notable being "Journey to the Center of The Earth" (2008) starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956), and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" (2012) starring Dwayne Johnson. Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all time, and still inspires people the world over.
