The original edition, written in association with the late Arthur Oswald thirty years ago, has long since been unavailable, so the appearance of this completely revised edition is a major publishing event in the field of mediaeval architectural history. Dr. Harvey has added the lives of about 400 new craftsmen to the 1300 or so contained in the original edition, including some masters of considerable stature, such as Ivo de Raghton, the pre-eminent mason in York in the early 14th century, and John Montfort, the master mason to Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. A number of the existing lives have also been completely rewritten, a notable example being that of Thomas of Witney, one of the major masters of the Decorated period, whose career encompassing Westminster, Winchester and the South-West is now fully expounded; and many other entries for notable craftsmen, such as John Wastell, William Wynford and Henry Yeveley, have been updated and extended. The new information derives not only from the researches of Dr. Harvey and Arthur Oswald since the appearance of the original edition, but also from a great deal of fresh material sent to Dr. Harvey by leading authorities in the field. In addition, there are new introductory sections, including an appreciation of the late Arthur Oswald by his nephew, Philip Oswald, and the indexes and tables have been completely revised by L. S. Colchester and Dr. R. K. Morris. This work re-opens the debate about the importance of geometry and symbolism in medieval architectural design and argues the case for attributing an intellectual meaning to the planning of abbeys and cathedrals. In challenging prevailing claims for the use of arithmetical rations in architectural design, notably those based on the square root of two, Dr Hiscock advances a perspective consisting of proportions derived from the figures of Platonic geometry - the square, the equilateral triangle and the pentagon - and provides evidence for the symbolic interpretation of these figures. The investigation further reveals whole series of geometric relationships between some of England's most celebrated Norman cathedrals, such as Norwich or Durham, together with a wide sample from the Continent, from Old St Peter's in Rome to Chartres Cathedral, and sets out a comprehensive design method in each case. Hiscock first demonstrates the proposition that the ideas of Christian Platonism, including number and geometry, remained current and were employed in the thought of the early Middle Ages. In particular, he argues that they can be associated with the leading persons in the 10th-century revival of monasticism and that they found expression in the "white mantle of churches" that spread across Western Europe at the end of the first millennium AD. The book then provides a detailed analysis of the geometric proportions of church plans between the 9th and 12th centuries in Germany, France and in England. This research seeks to demonstrate that a coherent sequence of geometric forms can be seen in thse plans, forms which correspond to the key figures of Platonic geometry as understood in the context of Christian Platonist thought. In conclusion, the author shows how the system of design proposed could be set out on site using the known working methods of medieval masons.

Since 1969 he has been searching for the origins of the Gothic style, beginning with a five-year study of Chartres cathedral. At that time there were no coherent techniques for analysing the detailed construction history of existing stone structures. This he created. He expanded his research to include all the early Gothic churches in the Paris region with a three-year survey of over 3500 buildings. His most important discovery has been that all churches of this period were constructed in many short campaigns by mobile building teams, and that major innovation was more likely to occur in the smaller buildings than in the larger. This volume makes available 42 of the author's studies on the development of Gothic architecture in France.
