Book Synopsis Esoteric Buddhism in Mediaeval Maritime Asia by : Andrea Acri
Download or read book Esoteric Buddhism in Mediaeval Maritime Asia written by Andrea Acri and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume advocates a trans-regional, and maritime-focused, approach to studying the genesis, development and circulation of Esoteric (or Tantric) Buddhism across Maritime Asia from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries ce. The book lays emphasis on the mobile networks of human agents (‘Masters’), textual sources (‘Texts’) and images (‘Icons’) through which Esoteric Buddhist traditions spread. Capitalising on recent research and making use of both disciplinary and area-focused perspectives, this book highlights the role played by Esoteric Buddhist maritime networks in shaping intra-Asian connectivity. In doing so, it reveals the limits of a historiography that is premised on land-based transmission of Buddhism from a South Asian ‘homeland’, and advances an alternative historical narrative that overturns the popular perception regarding Southeast Asia as a ‘periphery’ that passively received overseas influences. Thus, a strong point is made for the appreciation of the region as both a crossroads and rightful terminus of Buddhist cults, and for the re-evaluation of the creative and transformative force of Southeast Asian agents in the transmission of Esoteric Buddhism across mediaeval Asia.

Download or read book Borobudur written by John N. Miksic and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 1990 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This glorious ninth-century Buddhist monument - the largest Buddhist monument in the world - stands in the midst of the lush Kedu plain of central Java in Indonesia, where it is visited annually by over a million people. Borobudur consists of over a thousand exquisite relief sculptures extending along its many terraces for a total distance of more than a mile. The monument is constructed to symbolically represent the pilgrimage to enlightenment. The visitor ascends Borobudur, past scenes depicting the world of desire, through the life story of the Buddha and the heroic deeds of other famous enlightened beings, finally arriving at the great circular terraces at the very top of the structure, symbolizing the formless world of emptiness and the attainment of enlightenment. With over eighty color photographs and an informative text, this book celebrates the art and architecture of this famous Buddhist monument. This is the first volume to be published since the ten-year restoration and reconstruction of Borobudur was completed in 1985. In addition to illuminating the archaeological history, religious symbolism, and cultural context of the monument, it presents a detailed description of the sculptured panels and their significance in Buddhist history and philosophy. This book not only provides a scholarly introduction to Borobudur and its historical context, but it also retells - in text and stunning color photographs - the major stories illustrated in the hundreds of bas-relief panels that rank among the masterpieces of Asian and Buddhist art." --

Download or read book Ruthless Compassion written by Robert N. Linrothe and published by Serindia Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical development of Esoteric Buddhism in India is still known only in outline. A few verifiably early texts do give some insight into the origin of the ideas which would later develop and spread to East and Southeast Asia, and to Tibet. However, there is another kind of evidence which can be harnessed to the project of reconstructing the history of Esoteric Buddhist doctrines and practice. This evidence consists of art objects, mainly sculpture, which survive in significant numbers from the 6th to the 13th century.

Download or read book Living House written by Roxana Waterson and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Living House is a pioneering work by respected anthropologist Roxana Waterson that has become a classic in its field. It is first book of its kind to present a detailed picture of houses within the complex social and symbolic fabric of indigenous South-East Asian peoples. The main focus of the book is on Indonesia, but in tracing historical links between architectural forms across the region, it reveals a much wider field of inquiry--covering all of the Austronesian peoples and cultures extending as far afield as Madagascar, Japan and the Pacific islands to New Zealand and Hawaii. As it probes the centrally significant role of houses within South-East Asian social systems, The Living House reveals new insights into the kinship systems, gender symbolism and cosmological principles of the peoples who build them, ultimately uncovering fundamental themes concerning the concepts of life force and life processes inherent in all of these cultures. A vivid picture is produced of how people shape buildings and buildings shape people--how rules about layout and spatial usage impact social relationships. The book concludes with a consideration of present-day changes affecting the fates of indigenous cultures and architectures throughout the region. This book will be of tremendous interest to architects and historians, and anyone interested in the indigenous art and cultures of South-East Asia.
Download or read book Indonesian Houses written by R. Schefold and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection aims to attract attention to the admirable achievements of indigenous builders in Indonesia and to contribute to a broader sense of commitment to the endangered architectural heritage in the region. It presents the second part of the results of a research project on vernacular architecture in western Indonesia, sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. The volume is intended to provide an introduction to all relevant vernacular architectural traditions and developments in western Indonesia. The 21 contributions, all written by researchers with long first-hand experience in the area they are dealing with, are arranged according to the location of the ethnic groups from west to east—from Aceh to Western Java. Each contributor was asked to enrich the architectural description with a self-chosen particular topic illustrating social, ideological and environmental peculiarities of the field situation. The book takes account of the rich diversity of the various contexts and artistic elaborations that developed in the region. The first collection of essays, Indonesian houses, Volume 1: Tradition and transformation in vernacular architecture, was published as nr. 207 of the Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (Leiden, 2003). It focussed on case studies demonstrating how a common architectural heritage has been affected by historical changes, giving shape to a multiplicity of local developments and adaptations both in their material aspects and in their functions as objects of social value and meaning.
