Book Synopsis Manual for Radiation Oncology Nursing Practice and Education by : Maurene McQuestion
Download or read book Manual for Radiation Oncology Nursing Practice and Education written by Maurene McQuestion and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Advances in technology, research, and evidence-based practice have led to improvements in the care of patients receiving radiation therapy. The knowledge and expertise required by nurses must focus on the needs of patients who come into their care at any point across the trajectory of the cancer journey. Nurses may work with patients at varying stages of the radiation therapy process and in a wide range of settings. Regardless, however, the need to be knowledgeable about the symptoms and side effects associated with this treatment is essential for nurses caring for this patient population. The Oncology Nursing Society has published the fifth edition of Manual for Radiation Oncology Nursing Practice and Education to support nurses who care for patients who will receive, are receiving, or have received radiation therapy. The fifth edition features significant updates and changes to the content to reflect advances in technology, treatment options, and symptom manage¬ment. New sections have been added based on input from radiation oncology nurses or as a result of changes in treatment options, the needs of specific patient populations, and observations from clinical practice. New topics include patients with cognitive changes and dementia; general distress and coping; patients with mental illness; special populations, such as women who are pregnant, ado-lescents, and young adults; special needs related to late effects of treatment and cardiac toxicities; and treatment modalities, includ¬ing cobalt therapy and immunotherapy. This manual serves as an essential resource for individual nurses new to working in a radiation therapy set¬ting as well as to nurses wanting to advance their knowledge in radiation biology and protection, diverse radiation therapy modalities, combination treatments, site- or disease-specific concerns, symptom management, special populations, and care during transition points. Additionally, this manual can be a resource to advanced practice clinicians, educators, and administrators, with a focus on support for nursing staff seeking the education and skills required to care for patients receiving radiation therapy and their families"--
Book Synopsis Cancer Care for the Whole Patient by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer--including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life--cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Book excerpt: Although surgery remains the mainstay of treatment for the patient diagnosed with a solid tumour, how a patient is cared for before and after surgery has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. Where once surgical patients with cancer were placed in specialized care centres staffed with specially trained and certified oncology nurses, surgical oncology patients are now often found on mixed units housing similar surgical patient populations and often in the care of nurses who are not specialized in oncology. In today's changing climate, oncology nurses work much more closely with a diverse team of healthcare professionals and having an intimate knowledge of the surgical oncology patient and treatment process has become even more important. Surgical Oncology Nursing provides you a detailed examination of surgical patients with cancer from diagnosis to survivorship. The care of the surgical patient with cancer involves a diverse healthcare team with many hands touching the patient at different stages, and the editors of this new book bring a varied set of backgrounds, from nurse navigation to advanced practice nursing.Chapters provide you with a full view of the process for a variety of patients with cancer. You'll gain details in areas such as diagnosis, preoperative and perioperative care, nutritional care, surgical wounds and ostomy care, as well as survivorship issues. In addition, you'll gain insight into implications for pediatric and geriatric patients. You'll also get details on surgical procedures used on patients with cancer, including robotic minimally invasive surgery, interventional radiology, intraoperative radiation therapy, and reconstructive surgery. The core of the book focuses on the surgical care needed for patients with different types of tumours. Surgical Oncology Nursing reviews a variety of tumour types, from breast cancer to skin cancer, and details the specifics for the care of each patient population. In all, 11 types of cancers are reviewed, providing you the comprehensive information you need. Whether care is provided in a dedicated, oncology setting or within a diverse patient care environment, you'll need the type of knowledge found in Surgical Oncology Nursing to provide the best care possible for this unique patient population.
