Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female Doctors in Canada is an accessible collection of articles by experienced physicians and researchers exploring how systems, practices, and individuals must change as medicine becomes an increasingly female-dominated profession. As the ratio of practicing physicians shifts from predominately male to predominately female, issues such as work hours, caregiving, and doctor-patient relationships will all be affected. Canada's medical education is based on a system that has always been designed by and for men; this is also true of our healthcare systems, influencing how women practice, what type of medicine they choose to practice, and how they wish to balance their personal lives with their work. With the intent to open a larger conversation, Female Doctors in Canada reconsiders medical education, health systems, and expectations, in light of the changing face of medicine. Highlighting the particular experience of women working in the medical profession, the editors trace the history of female practitioners, while also providing a perspective on the contemporary struggles women face as they navigate a system that was tailored to the male experience, and is yet to be modified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the twentieth century, the nature of medical practice has changed more quickly, more dramatically, and far more publicly than that of any other profession in Canada. In this study Bernard Blishen identifies the social and political pressures on the medical profession and assesses how it has responded to them. Among the changes doctors have confronted are third-party pressures from government and hospital bureaucracies, greater public knowledge, improved technology, recognition of patients’ rights, and legal challenges. Blishen discusses how the doctors achieved dominance in the health field, reviews demographic changes within the profession and the larger population, examines data on the changing health status of Canadians, and charts physician supply against patient demand. He finds that the chief source of his profession’s collegial strength has been the homogeneity of its membership. This homogeneity is declining with increasing numbers of women and ethnic groups in the profession and increasing specialization. Blishen offers a comprehensive, quantified overview of a profession in transition, and suggests the implications of its changes for all Canadians.

The key focus of the publication is ‘reliable’; describing how leadership can ensure never less than reliable standards of care for patients and how excellence can be achieved. The focus throughout is on ensuring that patients and their families can depend on a reliable healthcare system for their needs, fulfilling their expectations that hospitals are trustworthy, stable and capable of dealing with their health, from the simplest to the most complex illnesses. Each of the chapters focuses on a different aspect of building a reliable healthcare system, concentrating on the leadership necessary to deliver and manage the different component elements of the healthcare system. The nominated contributors for this book are recognized leaders from various healthcare systems around the globe, including the UK, USA, Canada and South Korea/Singapore. The contributors have been selected to ensure a wide perspective of healthcare management, building on diverse approaches, practices and experiences, and are currently practicing healthcare management in their respective systems. The book aims to focus on the pragmatic rather than theoretical and will provide a series of practical methodologies and case studies to help improve decision making in healthcare management. Book excerpt: As the 21st century approaches, questions such as what will be the roles and responsibilities of doctors in the next century and how can we prepare young doctors for the future need to be answered. Medical education has entered a new era at all levels, lead by changes in undergraduate curricula, and medical educators are asking what change is necessary to prepare future physicians for practice in the 21st century. This book charts recent developments in medical education that are withstanding the test of time and establishes a baseline for development in the next century. It deals with many important issues in medical education covering the new developments at the prequalification stage of medical training. Specific examples of successful models and ideas for basic clinical training are included, and there are chapters on curriculum design, use of the Internet, assessment, and clinical teaching and aims for the year 2000. Written by current leaders and researchers in the field, it is an invaluable reference and guide for all those interested in medical education.

Book excerpt: The U.S. health care system is in a state of flux, and changes currently under way seem capable of exerting sizable effects on medical innovation. This volume explores how the rapid transition to managed care might affect the rate and direction of medical innovation. The experience with technological change in medicine in other nations whose health care systems have "single-payer" characteristics is thoroughly examined. Technology and Health Care in an Era of Limits examines how financing and care delivery strategies affect the decisions made by hospital administrators and physicians to adopt medical technologies. It also considers the patient's stake in the changing health care economy and the need for a stronger independent contribution of patients to the choice of technology used in their care. Finally, the volume explores the impact of changes in the demand for medical technology in pharmaceutical, medical device, and surgical procedure innovation.

Book excerpt: The influence of educational associations is often overlooked in treatises on Ontario's educational system because these groups tend to operate in an informal manner. This volume discusses the various types of educational organizations, their purposes, the scope and nature of their activities, and their contributions to education. It includes professional organizations, and a wide variety of groups with a direct or peripheral interest in education in its broad definition.
