Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Campion's Works My obligations are almost too numerous to be acknowledged in detail, though shift must be made to mention the greater. To Professor Raleigh, and that veteran of literature, Dr. Furnivall, I am indebted for encouragement and advice; and I have to thank Mr. Bullen, the pioneer of the study to which I am a mere apprentice, for his assistance, and for kind permission to quote several notes from his own editions. I owe much to Dr. Walker, Librarian of Peterhouse, who at my instance and armed with clues of my providing, made successful research among the College records for proof of Campion's membership; and who has shown untiring courtesy in affording me subsequent assistance. Among other literary creditors mention must be made of my friend Robin Flower of the British Museum, who, as already explained, was in a sense the only begetter of the present work of Dr. Thomas Lea Southgate, with whose authoritative voice I speak on technical questions of music; of my friend Adrian Collins, for the recollection of many fruitful discussions upon music and prosody; of the Rev. F. R. Williams, Rector of Anstey, for the courtesy of access to the registers of his parish of Messrs. Routledge and Son, for their kind permission to quote notes from my small edition in their Muses' Library'; of Mr. Madan of the Bodleian, and the Librarian of the Cambridge University Library, for assistance which has saved me time and labour; and, finally, of the officials of the Clarendon Press, for considerate help and useful suggestions, and for a liberality in the matter of reproductions and illustrations which will have Contributed no little to any success with which this book may meet. These birthdays will be the death of me yet, thought Henry Campion with a humorous sigh as he plodded through the muddy streets toward his own elegant mansion on a height in Los Angeles. In the days of his frost-nipped boyhood back East, the Campion family had bee-n too poor and too busy to pay much regard to anniversaries of any sort; and Henry found now as his own birth days followed one another faster and faster, with the whirring speed of a weaver's shuttle, that he was growing averse to hearing them mentioned. The effect of birthdays like that of certain drugs - is cumulative, and must naturally appall his beautiful wife, his junior by nearly twenty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cupid of Campion In which Clarence Esmond places himself in the hands of the Bright-eyed Goddess of Adventure, and entrusted by that Deity to the care of a Butcher's Boy. On morning early in September, the sun was shining brightly upon the village of McGregor. Nestled in a coulee between two hills, one rising squarely and rock-ribbed, lacking only the illusion of windows to give it the appearance of a ruined castle, the other to the northwest, sloping gently upwards, and crowned at the summit with a number of villas, McGregor, running down to the Mississippi River, was as pretty a town as Iowa could boast. On this bright particular morning, an overgrown youth was sitting on the boat-landing, his feet dangling above the water, his face glooming darkly. Master Abe Thompson, age sixteen, was troubled in spirit. He was homeless. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: “A top-notch mystery full of keen characterization, humor, old English atmosphere, a charmingly decadent family, and a few sudden deaths.” —The New York Times A beggarwoman on a bench arouses Albert Campion’s curiosity—and helps Scotland Yard lure him into a case of family dysfunction. The seemingly destitute woman is none other than a member of the eccentric Palinode family, which has recently lost two of its members. The police suspect a poisoner is on the loose, which is why Campion is willing to go undercover as a lodger in the boardinghouse where they live. As the recently deceased are exhumed, Campion becomes acquainted with the old-fashioned, out-of-the-ordinary family members, who talk in crossword puzzle clues, sneak out at night, and cook vats of stinky food in the basement to save money. And if that’s not enough to keep Campion on his toes, the local undertaker seems to be digging himself into a hole . . . Praise for Margery Allingham “Margery Allingham stands out like a shining light.” —Agatha Christie “The best of mystery writers.” —The New Yorker “Don’t start reading these books unless you are confident that you can handle addiction.” —The Independent “One of the finest Golden-Age crime novelists.” —The Sunday Telegraph “Spending an evening with Campion is one of life’s pure pleasures.” —The Sunday Times

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Village Champion IT was towards the end Of a very hot summer, and all the human population Of that crowded square of the great city had spent the first half of the night in the streets. Either that, or in leaning halfway out of their Windows to get a breath of fresh air. Now that sunrise was again so near at hand, however, and the breeze from the sea had done SO much to make the world more comfortable to live in, the closely-built hotels and tenement houses were all asleep. The former were mostly of the sort that sell lager beer and other things in the basement, and the latter were just the kind of places in which men and women ought not to live. Up in the third-story front room Of one Of those hotels, however, a boy Of about seventeen - a well built, dark-eyed, curly-headed, handsome boy sat on a wooden-seated chair, wide-awake, and seemed to be studying the condition of somebody who lay on the bed near him. There was a curiously-set expression Of deter mination on the bright, young face, very much as if he had made up his mind to do something, and did not mean to be very long in going about it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Champions of Christendom The materials which Johnson has so skilfully worked up into a history, equally poetic and romantic, he doubtless found in the traditional tales and knight errantry common in his day throughout Europe, and which have been largely drawn upon by the romance writers of other countries. There are occasional de tails and allusions in the original version, which, although, if judged by the standard of the period, they could not fairly be objected to, have been omitted in the present edition, as perhaps too coarse for the more sensitive modern reader; and the work generally has been slightly condensed, where this could be done without affecting the continuity of the narrative. It is believed that, in its present form, the Famous Historie will be acceptable to many who have but a dim recollection of the fascination of its pages before the existing phalanx of modern novels had almost driven it from the field, and will be welcome reading to the youth of both sexes who have had no farther opportunity of making the acquaintance of its heroes than that afforded by the exploits of St George and the Dragon in the arena of an amphitheatre.
