Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Readings in Literature These reading books have been prepared in the first instance for use among pupils of eleven or twelve and above, and are thus suitable for the middle forms of secondary schools, the four years of central and higher grade schools, the upper Standards of elementary schools and the literature courses of continuation schools. Admirable use is now made of what are called Continuous Readers; but these should not wholly supplant a miscellany, a collection of extracts good in themselves and representative of great or interesting writers. Reading in schools may take three forms - audible reading by individual pupils, silent reading by all members of a class and reading by the teacher to the class. These forms represent three grades of difficulty in matter. Pupils can appreciate poetry and prose well read to them which they could not themselves read aloud with intelligence. Some parts, therefore, of the available material should reach the third grade of difficulty. It must certainly not all be kept down to the level of a stumbler's precarious fluency. Litera ture Should be measured out to readers by their capacity to receive rather than by their ability to deliver. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Readings in Italian Literature The Editor of this volume desires to present a picture of Italian thought in the 19th century. The book is of necessity sketchy, fragmentary and superficial; as with persons, so with peoples and countries - the more you love them, if you love them intelligently, the less adequate any description becomes. But the Italy of the present is really an unknown country in England. Even those who read Italian have rarely penetrated into the intellectual life of modern Italy beyond Manzoni, Carducci or d' Annunzio, Matilde Serao or Grazia Deledda. Certain authors, like Mazzini, are well known by name, but their writings are rarely read. This has suggested the guiding lines of these Readings. The period they cover extends from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the War. Hence certain outstanding names such as Parini's and others will not be found; and, with one or two exceptions, the literature of the War is excluded. If dealt with as a national manifestation, the War would require a volume to itself, like Signor Prezzolini's interesting attempt in his Anthology Tutta la Guerra. The theatre has also been omitted, for it would have been impossible to give extracts from plays without exceeding the limited space available. The light is not concentrated upon the great names of the past, but is distributed over as many currents of. life as space and opportunity allowed. Little prominence is therefore given to well-known authors; much space is allotted to others whose very names are unknown here, although they may have secured a permanent place in the esteem and affection of their fellow-countrymen. The transition from one group to another 1s sometimes by connexion of thought, sometimes by way of contrast. The pictures with four exceptions have been chosen from the works of French masters. In most instances they are obvious illustra tions of the text with which they are associated; in a few the connexion is less apparent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Readings In Spanish Literature As there are chronological coincidences of literary productions between Spain and England, so there are corresponding coin cidences of comparative sterility. The eighteenth century is a desolate period in each country; national spirit had sunk to a low point in Spain as in England, and French taste governed the leaders of literary fashion in both lands. Production at this time is thin and uninspired, and the reaction of romanticism was almost a necessity, if literature were to survive at all. It is not for us to estimate the attainments of Blake, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron and Scott, or to compare the literary gifts of each of these men with those of their conceivable Spanish compeers. Be it enough to note that, while England is perhaps somewhat more advanced in point of time, there has been no real solution of continuity in Spain where the romantic spirit has never died out since the heyday of her literary renown. Sufficient proof of this will, possibly, be found in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cambridge History of English Literature, Vol. 9 HE present volume, we hope, will shortly be followed by the tenth, dealing with the age of Johnson. As the canvas grows more crowded, we must ask our readers to take note that the grouping of writers, on the principles which we have endeavoured to follow in this work, makes it impossible, even were it desirable, to maintain a strict chronological order as to the inclusion of particular names in particular volumes. Thus, in the present volume, notices of several divines, and, again, of several dramatists, together with the mention of other names, have had to be reserved for its successor.
