Book Synopsis The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville by :
Download or read book The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a complete English translation of the Latin Etymologies of Isidore, Bishop of Seville (c.560–636). Isidore compiled the work between c.615 and the early 630s and it takes the form of an encyclopedia, arranged by subject matter. It contains much lore of the late classical world beginning with the Seven Liberal Arts, including Rhetoric, and touches on thousands of topics ranging from the names of God, the terminology of the Law, the technologies of fabrics, ships and agriculture to the names of cities and rivers, the theatrical arts, and cooking utensils. Isidore provides etymologies for most of the terms he explains, finding in the causes of words the underlying key to their meaning. This book offers a highly readable translation of the twenty books of the Etymologies, one of the most widely known texts for a thousand years from Isidore's time.

Book Synopsis Genomic Signal Processing and Statistics by : Edward R. Dougherty
Download or read book Genomic Signal Processing and Statistics written by Edward R. Dougherty and published by Hindawi Publishing Corporation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in genomic studies have stimulated synergetic research and development in many cross-disciplinary areas. Processing the vast genomic data, especially the recent large-scale microarray gene expression data, to reveal the complex biological functionality, represents enormous challenges to signal processing and statistics. This perspective naturally leads to a new field, genomic signal processing (GSP), which studies the processing of genomic signals by integrating the theory of signal processing and statistics. Written by an international, interdisciplinary team of authors, this invaluable edited volume is accessible to students just entering this emergent field, and to researchers, both in academia and in industry, in the fields of molecular biology, engineering, statistics, and signal processing. The book provides tutorial-level overviews and addresses the specific needs of genomic signal processing students and researchers as a reference book. The book aims to address current genomic challenges by exploiting potential synergies between genomics, signal processing, and statistics, with special emphasis on signal processing and statistical tools for structural and functional understanding of genomic data. The first part of this book provides a brief history of genomic research and a background introduction from both biological and signal-processing/statistical perspectives, so that readers can easily follow the material presented in the rest of the book. In what follows, overviews of state-of-the-art techniques are provided. We start with a chapter on sequence analysis, and follow with chapters on feature selection, classification, and clustering of microarray data. We then discuss the modeling, analysis, and simulation of biological regulatory networks, especially gene regulatory networks based on Boolean and Bayesian approaches. Visualization and compression of gene data, and supercomputer implementation of genomic signal processing systems are also treated. Finally, we discuss systems biology and medical applications of genomic research as well as the future trends in genomic signal processing and statistics research.

Book Synopsis Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations by the Finite Element Method by : Claes Johnson
Download or read book Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations by the Finite Element Method written by Claes Johnson and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the finite element method for solving numeric problems, this volume offers the keys to an important technique in computational mathematics. Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses, it outlines clear connections with applications and considers numerous examples from a variety of science- and engineering-related specialties. This text encompasses all varieties of the basic linear partial differential equations, including elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic problems, as well as stationary and time-dependent problems. Additional topics include finite element methods for integral equations, an introduction to nonlinear problems, and considerations of unique developments of finite element techniques related to parabolic problems, including methods for automatic time step control. The relevant mathematics are expressed in non-technical terms whenever possible, in the interests of keeping the treatment accessible to a majority of students.

Book Synopsis Malleus Maleficarum by : Heinrich Kramer
Download or read book Malleus Maleficarum written by Heinrich Kramer and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malleus Maleficarum is a seminal treatise regarding witchcraft and demons, presented here complete with an authoritative translation to modern English by Montague Summers. At the time this book was published in 1487, the Christian church had considered witchcraft a dangerous affront to the faith for many centuries. Executions of suspected witches were intermittent, and various explanations of behaviors deemed suspect were thought to be caused by possession, either by the devil or demon such as an incubus or succubus. Kramer wrote this book after he had tried and failed to have a woman executed for witchcraft. Unhappy at the verdict of the court, he authored the Malleus Maleficarum as a manual for other witch seekers to refer to. For centuries the text was used by Christians as a reference source on matters of demonology, although it was not used directly by the Inquisition who became notorious for their tortures and murders.
