Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't really know the place where you live until you know the shapes and origins of the land around you. To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant

Book Synopsis Counterpoints by : Anti-Eviction Mapping Project
Download or read book Counterpoints written by Anti-Eviction Mapping Project and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counterpoints: A San Francisco Bay Area Atlas of Displacement and Resistance brings together cartography, essays, illustrations, poetry, and more in order to depict gentrification and resistance struggles from across the San Francisco Bay Area and act as a roadmap to counter-hegemonic knowledge making and activism. Compiled by the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, each chapter reflects different frameworks for understanding the Bay Area’s ongoing urban upheaval, including: evictions and root shock, indigenous geographies, health and environmental racism, state violence, transportation and infrastructure, migration and relocation, and speculative futures. By weaving these themes together, Counterpoints expands normative urban-studies framings of gentrification to consider more complex, regional, historically grounded, and entangled horizons for understanding the present. Understanding the tech boom and its effects means looking beyond San Francisco’s borders to consider the region as a socially, economically, and politically interconnected whole and reckoning with the area’s deep history of displacement, going back to its first moments of settler colonialism. Counterpoints combines work from within the project with contributions from community partners, from longtime community members who have been fighting multiple waves of racial dispossession to elementary school youth envisioning decolonial futures. In this way, Counterpoints is a collaborative, co-created atlas aimed at expanding knowledge on displacement and resistance in the Bay Area with, rather than for or about, those most impacted.
Book Synopsis Exploring Airport Employee Commute and Parking Strategies by : Diane M. Ricard
Download or read book Exploring Airport Employee Commute and Parking Strategies written by Diane M. Ricard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airport employees are vital to the operation of an airport. They staff the airport on a daily basis from well before the first flight operation until after the last flight operation, which at many airports is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Airport employees generate a significant number of vehicle trips to and from the airport each day, which impacts air quality, airport traffic conditions, and traffic in the communities surrounding the airport and on the freeway system. The purpose of this report was to determine what is known about airport employee commute patterns and commute modes, what programs are being offered to airport employees by the airport operator or a transportation management association (TMA) to provide them with alternatives to the drive alone commute to work, how progress is being monitored, what is known about the effectiveness of airport employee commute options (ECO) programs, what the challenges are for the providers of such programs, and to research some ECO programs offered by non-airport employers for program elements that may have applicability in the airport environment. This report was accomplished through a literature search of airport employee commute programs, commute programs offered by non-airport employers that may have applicability in the airport environment, and through interviews with four U.S. and one U.K. airport operators (of 16 airports and 3 TMAs identified, 84 percent interviewed) that offer comprehensive airport ECO programs. Each of the five case studies provides an example of how ECO strategies are applied in the airport environment.
