Book excerpt: Uncover the Useful Interactions of Fixed Point Theory with Topological Structures Nonlinear Functional Analysis in Banach Spaces and Banach Algebras: Fixed Point Theory under Weak Topology for Nonlinear Operators and Block Operator Matrices with Applications is the first book to tackle the topological fixed point theory for block operator matrices with nonlinear entries in Banach spaces and Banach algebras. The book provides researchers and graduate students with a unified survey of the fundamental principles of fixed point theory in Banach spaces and algebras. The authors present several extensions of Schauder’s and Krasnosel’skii’s fixed point theorems to the class of weakly compact operators acting on Banach spaces and algebras, particularly on spaces satisfying the Dunford–Pettis property. They also address under which conditions a 2×2 block operator matrix with single- and multi-valued nonlinear entries will have a fixed point. In addition, the book describes applications of fixed point theory to a wide range of diverse equations, including transport equations arising in the kinetic theory of gas, stationary nonlinear biological models, two-dimensional boundary-value problems arising in growing cell populations, and functional systems of integral equations. The book focuses on fixed point results under the weak topology since these problems involve the loss of compactness of mappings and/or the missing geometric and topological structure of their underlying domain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this book is the theory of state spaces of operator algebras and their geometry. The states are of interest because they determine representations of the algebra, and its algebraic structure is in an intriguing and fascinating fashion encoded in the geometry of the state space. From the beginning the theory of operator algebras was motivated by applications to physics, but recently it has found unexpected new applica tions to various fields of pure mathematics, like foliations and knot theory, and (in the Jordan algebra case) also to Banach manifolds and infinite di mensional holomorphy. This makes it a relevant field of study for readers with diverse backgrounds and interests. Therefore this book is not intended solely for specialists in operator algebras, but also for graduate students and mathematicians in other fields who want to learn the subject. We assume that the reader starts out with only the basic knowledge taught in standard graduate courses in real and complex variables, measure theory and functional analysis. We have given complete proofs of basic results on operator algebras, so that no previous knowledge in this field is needed. For discussion of some topics, more advanced prerequisites are needed. Here we have included all necessary definitions and statements of results, but in some cases proofs are referred to standard texts. In those cases we have tried to give references to material that can be read and understood easily in the context of our book.

In roughterms, there arethree types ofthem:algebrasofboundedlinear operators on Banach spaces with composition and the operator norm, al- bras consisting of bounded continuous functions on topological spaces with pointwise product and the uniform norm, and algebrasof integrable functions on locally compact groups with convolution as multiplication. These all play a key role in modern analysis. Much of operator theory is best approached from a Banach algebra point of view and many questions in complex analysis (such as approximation by polynomials or rational functions in speci?c - mains) are best understood within the framework of Banach algebras. Also, the study of a locally compact Abelian group is closely related to the study 1 of the group algebra L (G). There exist a rich literature and excellent texts on each single class of Banach algebras, notably on uniform algebras and on operator algebras. This work is intended as a textbook which provides a thorough introduction to the theory of commutative Banach algebras and stresses the applications to commutative harmonic analysis while also touching on uniform algebras. In this sense and purpose the book resembles Larsen’s classical text [75] which shares many themes and has been a valuable resource. However, for advanced graduate students and researchers I have covered several topics which have not been published in books before, including some journal articles.

Book excerpt: Since quasi-uniform spaces were defined in 1948, a diverse and widely dispersed literatureconcerning them has emerged. In Quasi-Uniform Spaces, the authors present a comprehensivestudy of these structures, together with the theory of quasi-proximities. In additionto new results unavailable elsewhere, the volume unites fundamental materialheretofore scattered throughout the literature.Quasi-Uniform Spaces shows by example that these structures provide a natural approachto the study of point-set topology. It is the only source for many results related to completeness, and a primary source for the study of both transitive and quasi-metric spaces.Included are H. Junnila's analogue of Tamano's theorem, J. Kofner's result showing thatevery GO space is transitive, and R. Fox's example of a non-quasi-metrizable r-space. Inaddition to numerous interesting problems mentioned throughout the text , 22 formalresearch problems are featured. The book nurtures a radically different viewpoint oftopology , leading to new insights into purely topological problems.Since every topological space admits a quasi-uniformity, the study of quasi-uniformspaces can be seen as no less general than the study of topological spaces. For such study,Quasi-Uniform Spaces is a necessary, self-contained reference for both researchers andgraduate students of general topology . Information is made particularly accessible withthe inclusion of an extensive index and bibliography .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and highlights the fertile interaction between logic and operator algebras, which in recent years has led to the resolution of several long-standing open problems on C*-algebras. The interplay between logic and operator algebras (C*-algebras, in particular) is relatively young and the author is at the forefront of this interaction. The deep level of scholarship contained in these pages is evident and opens doors to operator algebraists interested in learning about the set-theoretic methods relevant to their field, as well as to set-theorists interested in expanding their view to the non-commutative realm of operator algebras. Enough background is included from both subjects to make the book a convenient, self-contained source for students. A fair number of the exercises form an integral part of the text. They are chosen to widen and deepen the material from the corresponding chapters. Some other exercises serve as a warmup for the latter chapters.

By encompassing important foundational material, contemporary research, and recent advancements, this monograph offers a state-of-the-art reference. It will appeal to anyone interested in questions of amenability, including those familiar with the author’s previous volume Lectures on Amenability. Cornerstone topics are covered first: namely, the theory of amenability, its historical context, and key properties of amenable groups. This introduction leads to the amenability of Banach algebras, which is the main focus of the book. Dual Banach algebras are given an in-depth exploration, as are Banach spaces, Banach homological algebra, and more. By covering amenability’s many applications, the author offers a simultaneously expansive and detailed treatment. Additionally, there are numerous exercises and notes at the end of every chapter that further elaborate on the chapter’s contents. Because it covers both the basics and cutting edge research, Amenable Banach Algebras will be indispensable to both graduate students and researchers working in functional analysis, harmonic analysis, topological groups, and Banach algebras. Instructors seeking to design an advanced course around this subject will appreciate the student-friendly elements; a prerequisite of functional analysis, abstract harmonic analysis, and Banach algebra theory is assumed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In several proofs from the theory of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, an essential contribution comes from the Jordan canonical structure of linear maps acting on finite-dimensional vector spaces. On the other hand, there exist classical results concerning Lie algebras which advise us to use infinite-dimensional vector spaces as well. For example, the classical Lie Theorem asserts that all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of solvable Lie algebras are one-dimensional. Hence, from this point of view, the solvable Lie algebras cannot be distinguished from one another, that is, they cannot be classified. Even this example alone urges the infinite-dimensional vector spaces to appear on the stage. But the structure of linear maps on such a space is too little understood; for these linear maps one cannot speak about something like the Jordan canonical structure of matrices. Fortunately there exists a large class of linear maps on vector spaces of arbi trary dimension, having some common features with the matrices. We mean the bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Certain types of bounded operators (such as the Dunford spectral, Foia§ decomposable, scalar generalized or Colojoara spectral generalized operators) actually even enjoy a kind of Jordan decomposition theorem. One of the aims of the present book is to expound the most important results obtained until now by using bounded operators in the study of Lie algebras.

It is aimed at graduate students with basic knowledge of functional analysis, or researchers who wish to pursue research in these areas. While covering the standard material necessary to embark on any further exploration of the theory (Gelfand theory, the GNS construction and the spectral theorem for normal operators), the book also presents specialized material and topics of recent interest, including the holomorphic functional calculus and upper-semicontinuity of the spectrum, Jacobson's Density Theorem, the Cohen-Hewitt Factorisation Theorem, Kaplansky's Density Theorem and Kadison's Transitivity Theorem. The presentation is detailed and clear, with special attention to highlighting the scope and limitations of the theory through examples. Each chapter includes Notes and Remarks which provide extra context, and in many instances relate the material to recent results in the research literature and to open problems. The appendices are not normally found in introductory textbooks, which include Fredholm theory for Hilbert space operators, Arens regularity, the injective and projective tensor products of Banach spaces, the Schatten p-classes, and the Sherman-Takeda Theorem.
