Book Synopsis South Africa’s Greatest Bowlers by : Ali Bacher
Download or read book South Africa’s Greatest Bowlers written by Ali Bacher and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are South Africa’s greatest bowlers? The South African cricket team has always had a formidable bowling attack, feared by batsmen around the world. Kagiso Rabada appears near the top of the current ICC rankings, and previous teams and generations have included their own legends. But who are the greatest of them all? Following the success of their books on all-rounders and batsmen, Ali Bacher and David Williams now turn their attention to South Africa’s top bowlers. The book features early legends such as Hugh Tayfield, Neil Adcock and Peter Pollock; post-isolation stars Allan Donald, Fanie de Villiers, Makhaya Ntini and Paul Adams; and recent speedsters Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada. It also considers players who, but for apartheid, might have been their equals. South Africa’s Greatest Bowlers provides fascinating insights about each man’s background and career, their technique and their main achievements. Based on new interviews, the book will take the reader down memory lane as former and current players reminisce about their most important matches, the opponents they loved and hated bowling to, and the teammates they most respected. Written by cricket legend Ali Bacher and top journalist David Williams, this is a book that no cricket fan can be without.

Book Synopsis What Can International Cricket Teach Us About the Role of Luck in Labor Markets? by : Mr.Rodney Ramcharan
Download or read book What Can International Cricket Teach Us About the Role of Luck in Labor Markets? written by Mr.Rodney Ramcharan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How important is luck in determining labor market outcomes? We address this question using a new dataset of all international test cricketers who debuted between 1950 and 1985. We present evidence that a player’s debut performance is strongly affected by an exogenous source of variation: whether the debut series is played at home or abroad. This allows us to identify the role of luck - factors unrelated to ability - in shaping future career outcomes. We find that players lucky enough to debut at home perform significantly better on debut. Moreover, debut performance has a large and persistent impact on long run career outcomes. We also make headway in empirically distinguishing between competing explanations for why exogenous initial conditions exercise a persistent impact on career performance

Download or read book They Run with Surprising Swiftness written by Peter Radford and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have battled for a place in the male-dominated world of sports throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, overturning obstacles and highlighting the changing position of women in societies around the world. This has become one of the defining stories of our age and the central story of women’s sports. They Run with Surprising Swiftness tells a different and much older, forgotten story with many of the same themes. Sports have never been the sole preserve of men; women athletes have always been there. As this book shows, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain, women of all ages ran, fought, rode, played football, cricket, tennis, and other sports. They competed in tough, head-to-head events that required extraordinary endurance and skill. Though not labeled "athletic" at the time, these women performed feats that in our age would certainly earn that descriptor. They Run with Surprising Swiftness recognizes these remarkable athletes and their achievements and aims to restore them to their rightful place in the long history of women in sport.
