Irene Fonseca is the Mellon College of Science Professor of Mathematics and is currently the Director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests lie in the areas of continuum mechanics, calculus of variations, geometric measure theory and partial differential equations. Giovanni Leoni is also a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. He focuses his research on calculus of variations, partial differential equations and geometric measure theory with special emphasis on applications to problems in continuum mechanics and in materials science.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a considerable renewal of interest in the clas sical problems of the calculus of variations, both from the point of view of mathematics and of applications. Some of the most powerful tools for proving existence of minima for such problems are known as direct methods. They are often the only available ones, particularly for vectorial problems. It is the aim of this book to present them. These methods were introduced by Tonelli, following earlier work of Hilbert and Lebesgue. Although there are excellent books on calculus of variations and on direct methods, there are recent important developments which cannot be found in these books; in particular, those dealing with vector valued functions and relaxation of non convex problems. These two last ones are important in appli cations to nonlinear elasticity, optimal design . . . . In these fields the variational methods are particularly effective. Part of the mathematical developments and of the renewal of interest in these methods finds its motivations in nonlinear elasticity. Moreover, one of the recent important contributions to nonlinear analysis has been the study of the behaviour of nonlinear functionals un der various types of convergence, particularly the weak convergence. Two well studied theories have now been developed, namely f-convergence and compen sated compactness. They both include as a particular case the direct methods of the calculus of variations, but they are also, both, inspired and have as main examples these direct methods.

It brings together results of several recent approaches in generalizing the least action principle and the Euler–Lagrange equations to include fractional derivatives. General theorems are obtained for several types of variational problems for which recent results developed in the literature can be obtained as special cases. The existence of solutions is demonstrated under Tonelli type conditions. This often requires a - formulation of the initial model being under consideration. Due to the specific of the original problem, the resulting equation is usually either not differ- tiable (even if the data of the original model are smooth), or it does not satisfy the assumptions of the classical implicit function theorem. This phenomenon is the main reason why a considerable analytical inst- ment dealing with generalized equations (i.e., with finding zeros of multivalued mappings) and nonsmooth equations (i.e., the defining functions are not c- tinuously differentiable) has been developed during the last 20 years, and that under very different viewpoints and assumptions. In this theory, the classical hypotheses of convex analysis, in particular, monotonicity and convexity, have been weakened or dropped, and the scope of possible applications seems to be quite large. Briefly, this discipline is often called nonsmooth analysis, sometimes also variational analysis. Our book fits into this discipline, however, our main intention is to develop the analytical theory in close connection with the needs of applications in optimization and related subjects. This text intends to present an approach that tries to track what could be called the ``middle way'' in this conflict. It is the result of several years of experience of the author teaching the mathematical physics courses at the Physics Institute of the University of São Paulo. The text is organized in the form of relatively short chapters, each appropriate for exposition in one lecture. Each chapter includes a list of proposed problems, which have varied levels of difficulty, including practice problems, problems that complete and extend the material presented in the text, and some longer and more difficult problems, which are presented as challenges to the students. There are complete solutions available, detailed and commented, to all the problems proposed, which are presented in separate volumes. This volume is dedicated to the complex calculus. This is a more practical and less abstract version of complex analysis and of the study of analytic functions. This does not mean that there are no proofs in the text, since all the fundamental theorems are proved with a good level of rigor. The text starts from the very beginning, with the definition of complex numbers, and proceeds up to the study of integrals on the complex plane and on Riemann surfaces.
