Book Synopsis Ponts en Béton Précontraint Par Post-tension by :
Download or read book Ponts en Béton Précontraint Par Post-tension written by and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1999 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-tensioned concrete has proved to be an economically competitive and safe form of bridge construction enabling concrete to be used for bridges of significantly longer spans than was previously possible using untensioned reinforced concrete. While France has been foremost in pioneering the use of prestressed concrete for bridge construction, the UK has also made significant contributions through its research and innovation. This book reports the findings of a joint study group set up by the French and UK central government highway agencies to liaise on issues concerning post-tensioned concrete bridges and seek solutions for problems where they exist. Throughout the years, these bodies have accumulated a wealth of knowledge, most of which has been unpublished until now. This book makes available for the first time the valuable experiences of the authors, most of whom have been personally responsible for formulating and administering the relevant rules and regulations in their respective countries. Written in both English and French, this state-of-the-art report will be of use to the designers, constructors and managers of post-tensioned concrete bridges and the manufacturers of post-tensioning systems. It contains extensive historical and technical information with numerous references and bibliographies at the end of most chapters. The book considers the potential difficulties associated with construction and maintenance, and how these can be identified and combated. It concludes with a look at the future of post-tensioned concrete bridges, focusing on the further development of regulatory requirements.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book Synopsis Water & Heritage by : Willem Willems
Download or read book Water & Heritage written by Willem Willems and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is vital for life, and its availability has been a concern for mankind throughout the ages. Its presence has always been ascertained in a variety of ways and the development of human society everywhere is connected with various forms of water management. Man also needed to manage water to find protection from its dangers and the need for that is increasing. In the coming decades, the impact of climate change is expected to intensify floods and droughts, affect groundwater resources, raise sea levels, increase pollution and enhance the frequency and magnitude of disasters. Societies around the world are challenged to adapt to these threats to ensure water security, economic prosperity and environmental and cultural sustainability. This book deals with the heritage of water management and the use that was made of water, as well as the impact of water management on heritage. An example of the former may be an ancient irrigation system in the Filipines or in the Middle East that still functions today, while the latter may reflect the importance of maintaining groundwater levels for the preservation of organic remains on archaeological sites or of wooden piles underneath standing buildings. In either case the papers in this book reflect the dynamic nature of water, and hence the equally dynamic relation between water management and heritage. This publication follows up on a Heritage and Water conference in Amsterdam, the first of its kind. Its main purpose is to credibly present the importance and value of heritage and historical experience for water and sustainable development, and vice versa, present the importance of water management for the protection of heritage. It presents evolving insights and concepts about Water and about Heritage from a variety of disciplines, policy and public perspectives illustrated with cases studies and aims to connect decision makers with experts such as engineers, archaeologists, historians, geographers, ecologist and landscape architects

Book Synopsis Dictionary of Civil Engineering by : Jean-Paul Kurtz
Download or read book Dictionary of Civil Engineering written by Jean-Paul Kurtz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 1520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am pleased to present a work which marks a milestone in the history of public works and, more precisely, in that of permanent structures—a comprehensive dictionary of Civil Engineering terms. Since the beginning of time, Man has always tried to find a means to clear the obstacles which nature erected to displace him. With the first tree trunk thrown across a river, man sought to improve the crossing structure. After the invention of the wheel, and to satisfy his thirst for conquest (Roman ways), and comfort (aqueducts), man built bridges that became a preremptory necessity to move quickly. Thus, Man started to build wooden and masonry works. With the passing centuries, the builders became masters in the art of building masonry works. Then came the Industrial Revolution and the advent of the steel (1864), which was closely followed by the invention of the reinforced concrete (1855). The need for railways and improving the road network inspired great works of crossing such as viaducts and tunnels. The boom of the railway network and the development of the car required the construction of an increasing number of new structures. This phenomenon continues today with hundreds of structures built each year throughout the world.
