Book excerpt: Introduction : Dans le cadre de cette étude, des Personnes Handicapées Vieillissantes (PHV) ont été interviewées sur la perception de leur vieillissement afin d'améliorer les réponses institutionnelles. Matériel et Méthode : Il s'agissait d'une étude qualitative, basée sur 30 entretiens semi-directifs, individuels, menés entre le 5 Juin et le 12 Novembre 2018 chez des travailleurs ou des retraités en Établissement et Service d'Aide par le Travail (ESAT), en Côte d'Or. Résultats : Émergeaient de leurs récits, la place importante accordée au travail dans 92% des cas, la mention de personnes proches (86%) ou événements ayant joué un rôle majeur dans leur situation de vie et la description précise de leurs problèmes de santé (83%). Les projections sur le vieillissement étaient limitées et variables selon le type de handicap. Ils se figuraient une retraite où le vieillissement restait lointain dans 88% des cas et les occupations floues dans 62% des cas. Les questions de vieillissement et de retraite n'apparaissaient pas comme une préoccupation première sinon au travers d'un accroissement de leur fatigabilité, souligné par 48% des PHV. 83% souhaitaient rester dans l'équivalent de leur logement actuel et 16% n'imaginaient pas de dégradation de leur état de santé. Conclusion : Les projections sur le vieillissement des PHV sont hétérogènes et influencées par leur parcours. Ils ont construit leur vie avec le handicap et même s'ils retrouvent avec l'ESAT une forme de réalisation sociale, cela reste un milieu protégé et restreint. Le rôle des intervenants revêt donc une importance particulière au regard de leur socialisation. Ces résultats interrogent la façon dont le médecin généraliste va conduire sa consultation et exercer sa médecine vis à vis de ces populations fragiles.

We have experienced a taste of this scenario in the U.S. in the last decade with the new emphasis on de-institutionalization, but Denise Jodelet takes us to an extraordinary community in France where the mentally ill have assumed a visible and prominent role for more than seventy years. The small French town of Ainay-le-Ch�teau and its environs are the site of a "family colony" for men, established in 1900. Here the patients ("lodgers") live with ordinary families ("foster parents"), hold jobs, and are free to move about the countryside. Jodelet's chronicle of daily life in the colony is made rich and vivid by extensive ethnographic material as she unravels a complex set of relationships, ultimately finding that while some of the barriers between the "other" and the larger society have been overcome, new ones have arisen in their place. This unique social experiment provides invaluable social and cultural insights, illuminating many fundamental issues in psychology, psychiatry, and sociology.
