In a shared memory system, each of the processor cores may read and write to a single shared address space. For a shared memory machine, the memory consistency model defines the architecturally visible behavior of its memory system. Consistency definitions provide rules about loads and stores (or memory reads and writes) and how they act upon memory. As part of supporting a memory consistency model, many machines also provide cache coherence protocols that ensure that multiple cached copies of data are kept up-to-date. The goal of this primer is to provide readers with a basic understanding of consistency and coherence. Thakkar SequentComputerSystems The aim of the workshop was to bring together researchers working on cache coherence protocols for shared-memory multiprocessors with various interconnect architectures. Shared-memory multiprocessors have become viable systems for many applications. Bus based shared-memory systems (Eg. Sequent's Symmetry, Encore's Multimax) are currently limited to 32 processors. The fIrst goal of the workshop was to learn about the performance ofapplications on current cache-based systems. The second goal was to learn about new network architectures and protocols for future scalable systems. These protocols and interconnects would allow shared-memory architectures to scale beyond current imitations. The workshop had 20 speakers who talked about their current research. The discussions were lively and cordial enough to keep the participants away from the wonderful sand and sun for two days. The participants got to know each other well and were able to share their thoughts in an informal manner. The workshop was organized into several sessions. The summary of each session is described below. This book presents revisions of some of the papers presented at the workshop.

Book excerpt: We present a study that accentuates the performance and scalability aspects of directory-based cache coherence in multiprocessor systems. Using a multiprocessor with a software-based coherence scheme, efficient implementations rely heavily on the programmer's ability to explicitly manage the memory system, which is typically handled by hardware support on other bus-based, shared memory multiprocessors. We describe a scalable, shared memory, cache coherent multiprocessor and present simulation results obtained on three parallel programs. This multiprocessor configuration exhibits high performance at no additional parallel programming cost.

Book excerpt: The workshop on Scalable Shared Memory Multiprocessors took place on May 26 and 27 1990 at the Stouffer Madison Hotel in Seattle, Washington as a prelude to the 1990 International Symposium on Computer Architecture. About 100 participants listened for two days to the presentations of 22 invited The motivation for this workshop was to speakers, from academia and industry. promote the free exchange of ideas among researchers working on shared-memory multiprocessor architectures. There was ample opportunity to argue with speakers, and certainly participants did not refrain a bit from doing so. Clearly, the problem of scalability in shared-memory multiprocessors is still a wide-open question. We were even unable to agree on a definition of "scalability". Authors had more than six months to prepare their manuscript, and therefore the papers included in this proceedings are refinements of the speakers' presentations, based on the criticisms received at the workshop. As a result, 17 authors contributed to these proceedings. We wish to thank them for their diligence and care. The contributions in these proceedings can be partitioned into four categories 1. Access Order and Synchronization 2. Performance 3. Cache Protocols and Architectures 4. However, in multi-processor systems utilizing shared memory, cache coherence protocols are necessary to ensure sequential consistency. Of the multiple coherence protocols developed, the scalability of directory-based schemes makes them ideal for RAW's architecture [1]. Although one such system has been demonstrated as a proof-of-concept, it lacks the ability to meet the requirements of load-intensive, high performance applications. It further provides the application developer with no programming constructs to easily leverage the system. This thesis further develops shared memory support for RAW, by bringing greater programmability and performance to shared memory applications. In doing so, it reveals that shared memory is a practical programming paradigm for developing parallel applications on the RAW architecture.

First, the directory structures required for the protocols are briefly reviewed. Next, the state diagrams and some examples of the two update-based protocols are presented; one of the protocols is based on a centralized directory, and the other is based on a singly-linked distributed directory. Protocol deadlock and the additional requirements placed the protocols to avoid such deadlock are also examined. Finally, protocol validation using an exhaustive validation tool known as Murphi is discussed.

Book excerpt: Directory-based cache consistency protocols have the potential to allow shared-memory multiprocessors to scale to a large number of processors. While many variations of these coherence schemes exist in the literature, they have typically been described at a rather high level, making adequate evaluation difficult. This paper explores the implementation issues of directory-based coherency strategies by developing a design at the level of detail needed to write a memory system functional simulator with an accurate timing model. The paper presents the design of both an invalidation coherency protocol and the associated directory/memory hardware. Support is added to prevent deadlock, handle subtle consistency situations, and implement a proper programming model of multiprocess execution. Extensions are delineated for realizing a multiple-threaded directory that can continue to process commands while waiting for a reply from a cache. The final hardware design is evaluated in the context of the number of parts required for implementation.

Book excerpt: Chip multiprocessors (CMPs) constitute the new trend for increasing the performance of future computers. In the near future, chips with tens of cores will become more popular. Nowadays, directory-based protocols constitute the best alternative to keep cache coherence in large-scale systems. Nevertheless, directory-based protocols have two important issues that prevent them from achieving better scalability: the directory memory overhead and the long cache miss latencies. This book focuses on these key issues. The first proposal is a scalable distributed directory organization that copes with the memory overhead of directory-based protocols. The second proposal presents the direct coherence protocols, which are aimed at avoiding the indirection problem of traditional directory-based protocols and, therefore, they improve applications' performance. Finally, a novel mapping policy for distributed caches is presented. This policy reduces the long access latency while lessening the number of off-chip accesses, leading to improvements in applications' execution time.
