Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tense is at its most interesting when it behaves badly. In this book Arjan Nijk investigates the variation between the past and present tenses to refer to past events in Classical Greek and beyond. Adopting a cognitive approach to the issue, he argues that the use of the present for preterite depends on the activation of implicit conceptual scenarios in which the gap between the past and the present is bridged. The book is distinguished from previous accounts by its precision in describing these conceptual scenarios, the combination of linguistic theorising with philological and statistical methods, the size of the corpus under investigation and the explicitly cross-linguistic scope. It provides a complete overview of the phenomenon of tense switching in Classical Greek, as well as new theoretical perspectives on deixis and viewpoint, and is important for classicists, narratologists and linguists of every stamp. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with historical consciousness and its artistic expressions in contemporary Greece since 1989 from the point of view that contemporary Greeks have been faced with the contradictions between on the one hand a glorious, world-famous yet distant past and, on the other, a traumatic contemporary history of wars, expulsions, civil strife and political and economic crises. Such clashes of imaginary identifications and collective traumas call for interpretations not only from historians but also from artists and storytellers. Therefore, the chapters in this volume explore the ways in which sensitive and creative perspectives of art approach and appropriate history in Greece. Through a rich collection of analytical case studies and creative reflections on Greece’s past, present, and future this volume presents the reader with the ways a set of contemporary Greek storytellers in different genres have incorporated previously under-explored or little-known themes, events, and epochs in modern Greek history showing how the past, by being interpreted and represented in the present, can teach us a lot about contemporary Greek society. The themes that form the point of departure for the stories told or retold cover various significant components of Greek history and culture such as ancient myths, the Ottoman period, the Greek War of Independence and the Greek Civil War, but also less prominent or known aspects of Greek history such as the Greek Enlightenment, the long and tragic history of Greek Jewry, and migration to and from Greece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps because of the fact that modern Greece is, through the Orthodox Church, inextricably linked with the Byzantine heritage, the precise meaning of this heritage, in its various aspects, has hitherto been surprisingly little discussed by scholars. This collection of specially commissioned essays aims to present an overview of some of the different, and often conflicting, tendencies manifested by modern Greek attitudes to Byzantium since the late eighteenth-century Enlightenment. The aim is to show just how formative views of Byzantium have been for modern Greek life and letters: for historiography and imaginative literature, on the one hand, and on the other, for language, law, and the definition of a culture. All Greek has been translated, and the volume is aimed at Byzantinists and Neohellenists alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of Byzantine and Modern Greek in Hellenic Studies: An Inaugural Lecture Delivered Before the University Thursday, October 29, 1908 To begin with, I must justify myself for venturing to undertake in this illustrious University the task of teach ing in a scientific field, cultivated now in all Europe by so many specialists and extending over a period of two thousand years. But the consciousness that by speak ing on these subjects I shall deal with familiar things, that by occupying myself in these studies I shall be transferred mentally to my fatherland, encourages me to believe that my teaching, whatever else it may lack, is at least based on a cordial interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of Byzantine and Modern Greek in Hellenic Studies: An Inaugural Lecture Delivered Before the University Thursday, October 29, 1908 But to-day we shall not deal with political, but with literary history. And the following question arises first of all; did Hellenism exercise any influence whatever on the intellectual progress of mankind from the fatal day upon which Mummius made Greece a province? I will reply, gentlemen, only with some hints. I shall pass over the well-known story of the submission of Italy to Graecia capta, and shall mention only the part which Greeks played in the spread of Christianity. As a fact, those intellectual struggles which were required to impose the new religion on the political authorities and to overcome the various heresies, were internal between Greeks. Of the 318 bishops of the first Oecumenical Synod ten only came from Latin-speaking places. There is no doubt that there were also others. But no other race had then an equal authority. With Christianity the simple-minded Greeks of Asia Minor overcame the infidel sophists of Greece proper, and that victory was so complete, that the name Hellene itself, which according to Isocrates was equivalent to civilized, was banished. This significant result must have been due to many reasons, some of which were, as we shall see, simply literary. But I fear that much more often the rhetorical phrase is repeated that Plato's style is that of Jupiter, than the fact is comprehended that the holy idiom of Christianity, and perhaps of Jesus Himself, is nothing else but late Greek. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Studies presents discussions by leading experts on all significant aspects of this diverse and fast-growing field. Byzantine Studies deals with the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire, the eastern half of the Late Roman Empire, from the fourth to the fourteenth century. Its centre was the city formerly known as Byzantium, refounded as Constantinople in 324 CE, the present-day Istanbul. Under its emperors, patriarchs, and all-pervasive bureaucracy Byzantium developed a distinctive society: Greek in language, Roman in legal system, and Christian in religion. Byzantium's impact in the European Middle Ages is hard to over-estimate, as a bulwark against invaders, as a meeting-point for trade from Asia and the Mediterranean, as a guardian of the classical literary and artistic heritage, and as a creator of its own magnificent artistic style.
