Book excerpt: 'An adventure beyond social mobility' portrays the importance of human resource development as a life pursuit. One objective is to document for my family information about my roots, educational struggles, and my adult life. The account, a legacy to my family and Africa, sends a message to other children born into similar socio-economic and cultural environment that hard work ultimately yields dividends. Another objective is to share with scholars interested in African development efforts by the international community to foster such development focusing on the population sector. The contribution under reference is not limited to personal publications; it also includes the recommendations from conferences, meetings, seminars, studies, symposia, and workshops organized under varying auspices of the international community. A final objective is to highlight key factors accounting for my social mobility in relation to those reported in social science literature. In terms of content, chapter one outlines the way of life of people in my village, their survival strategies, their traditional beliefs and religion, and cultural background as aspects of "my roots". Chapter two discusses my educational training experiences. The focus of chapter three is the re-entry problems that I encountered on returning to Nigeria from studies overseas and my initial contribution to African population and development literature. Chapter four highlights the evolution of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the development of African regional population program within the framework of the African census program. The next three chapters (five-seven) capture details of the main activities within the region in the course of my working for the ECA. While chapter eight outlines factors that have facilitated my upward mobility and relates the latter to those generally reported in social science literature as influencing social mobility, chapter nine focusses on my ongoing retirement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years of the 21st Century could well be called the 'decade(s) of the entrepreneur'. Entrepreneurship is an often-featured topic in magazine and newspaper articles, popular television shows and major films. Universities have added courses, departments, and even schools of entrepreneurship to their catalogs, and governments at all levels are competing to develop programs to encourage entrepreneurship. A key reason behind this growing interest is the widely held belief supported by economic data that entrepreneurship is a powerful engine of economic growth. By presenting accurate knowledge about entrepreneurship itself, this book serves to convert the rising tide of interest in entrepreneurship into advice and guidance that can actually assist entrepreneurs in achieving their goals. This book presents valid information concerning the factors that encourage entrepreneurship's emergence, including the conditions that shape its outcomes and how it unfolds as a process. This text draws on two key sources of knowledge input from entrepreneurs and the findings of empirical research obtained through systematic research. As the sub-title suggests, however, emphasis is placed on the latter whenever possible because the information individual entrepreneurs possess cannot readily serve as the basis for general principles or guidelines since it is unique to each entrepreneur. By combining evidence-based knowledge with the hard-earned wisdom of experienced entrepreneurs, this volume offers a balanced and inclusive guide useful to both current and aspiring entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship is indeed a driving force of economic growth. But beyond that, it is also a key mechanism through which human creativity, ingenuity, skill, and energy are converted into tangible outcomes that can, and often do, change the world in ways that enhance and enrich human welfare. This volume will be of particular interest to students of entrepreneurship in a broad array of fields ranging from business and management to engineering and governance. Suitable for undergraduate courses and graduate programs alike, this book is frontier blazing in its own right and will help those who read it be so as well.

In the ever-evolving realm of business, the path to sustained success requires an architecture that supports integrated processes with a blend of tools, technologies, high-performance teams, and strategic reinvention. Even medium businesses are fast evolving into structures replicating conglomerates and need to architect their businesses, learning from the conglomerates, to handle size with agility. “Scale it or Shut it” teaches the management essentials for handling conglomerate complexities for continued success. Discover the indispensable pillars that support your journey: • Business Architecture: Architect your business rather than shooting the arrow and making it the target where the arrow hits. This is fundamental to any complex business. • Orchestrate the Business: All the processes should work in unison with harmony rather than working on their own islands. • A closed loop of business: without a closed loop, management cannot know whether a strategy is working or not. • Organizational Synergy: Learn to harmonize multiple business arms and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation, driving your conglomerate’s competitive edge. This comprehensive guide combines expert insights with practical advice to help you chart a course towards creating and leading a business empire. Whether you’re working in medium business, mimicking the conglomerate, or elevating an existing empire to new heights, Scale it or Shut it equips you with the management essentials and the wisdom to navigate the complex world of conglomerates, transforming your aspirations into reality.
