BULLETIN OP THE NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OP NEW BRUNSWICK. ARTICLE I. AN OUTLINE OF PHYTOBIOLOGY. WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE STUDY OF ITS PROBLEMS BY LOCAL BOTANISTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR A BIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF ACADIAN PLANTS. Read May 1st, 1894. First Paper. It is clear to all botanists who note the signs of the times that the study of local Botany must take a new direction in the near future. Up to the present, under the favoring influences of intrinsic aesthetic interest, abundance everywhere of easily-handled materials, accurate terminology and excellent manuals, the systematic study of flowering plants has been the department of natural history most cultivated b those of scientific tastes, who must work without special training and away from the great centres. Hence has arisen the great class of local botanists. Their relationship to the science,, however, has been one of reciprocal advantage, for not only have they derived from it an occupation of elevated pleasure, of high educational value, and of radiant good influence, hut it in turn has profited greatly by their thorough explorations of local floras. But this mutually beneficial adjustment is becoming unbalanced. Not only on the one hand are the local botanists by their very devotion exhausting their field of systematic usefulness, but as well on the other, through the consequent narrowing of opportunity for original investigation and loss of its stimulating charm, the subjective value of the science to themselves is being impaired. Discoveries of real worth and studies in pursuit of new truth can now, for the most part, be made only at the expense of journeys from home often longer than time or means justify. The question, then, is forced upon us: In what direction lies a new field for local bot..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Hudson's Bay Company Archives is one of the world's most complete archival collections and a national treasure. Protected in the vaults of the Archives of Manitoba, its documents trace the history of the fur trade, North American exploration, the growth of a retail empire, and the evolution of Canada as a country. Keepers of the Record offers the first comprehensive look at the development of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives over three centuries." "Deidre Simmons places the archives within the historical context of the Company, England, and Canada, as well as British and Canadian archival traditions. Keepers of the Record is illustrated with archival photographs that evoke the texture and slightly musty smell of soft leather and crisp vellum and the ghostly presence of the people who created the pristine script, writing by candlelight in unheated (or overheated, depending on the season) dwellings in the wilderness of the Hudson Bay or in the centre of London."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book excerpt: This biography is about one of North Carolina's early governors, an advocate for public education in the post-Colonial period. Benjamin Smith (1757-1826) came from a distinguished South Carolina family and acquired enormous wealth in the Cape Fear region as a member of the planter class. Like his elite white peers, Smith was active in public life, in county government and as a legislator in state politics. He promoted public schools, the University of North Carolina, domestic manufacturing, banking, penal reform, and internal improvements. Earning the nickname "General" because of his militia activities, he rose to governorship but ended up dying in poverty.
Book Synopsis Next to Godliness by : Daniel Burnstein

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many Progressive Era reformers, the extent of street cleanliness was an important gauge for determining whether a city was providing the conditions necessary for impoverished immigrants to attain a state of "decency"--a level of individual well-being and morality that would help ensure a healthy and orderly city. Daniel Eli Burnstein's study examines prominent street sanitation issues in Progressive Era New York City--ranging from garbage strikes to "juvenile cleaning leagues"--to explore how middle-class reformers amassed a cross-class and cross-ethnic base of support for social reform measures to a degree greater than in practically any other period of prosperity in U.S. history. The struggle for enhanced civic sanitation serves as a window for viewing Progressive Era social reformers' attitudes, particularly their emphasis on mutual obligations between the haves and have-nots, and their recognition of the role of negative social and physical conditions in influencing individual behaviors.
Book Synopsis The Nature and Pace of Change in American Indian Cultures by : R. Michael Stewart
Download or read book The Nature and Pace of Change in American Indian Cultures written by R. Michael Stewart and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three thousand to four thousand years ago, the Native Americans of the mid-Atlantic region experienced a groundswell of cultural innovation. This remarkable era, known as the Transitional period, saw the advent of broad-bladed bifaces, cache blades, ceramics, steatite bowls, and sustained trade, among other ingenious and novel objects and behaviors. In The Nature and Pace of Change in American Indian Cultures, eight expert contributors examine the Transitional period in Pennsylvania and posit potential explanations of the significant changes in social and cultural life at that time. Building upon sixty years of accumulated data, corrected radiocarbon dating, and fresh research, scholars are reimagining the ancient environment in which native people lived. The Nature and Pace of Change in American Indian Cultures will give readers new insights into a singular moment in the prehistory of the mid-Atlantic region and the daily lives of the people who lived there. The contributors are Joseph R. Blondino, Kurt W. Carr, Patricia E. Miller, Roger Moeller, Paul A. Raber, R. Michael Stewart, Frank J. Vento, Robert D. Wall, and Heather A. Wholey.
