As far as possible series were obtained, the better to enable one to fix upon the characteristics of the varieties of a species inhabiting several of the islands, or those of closely allied species from the same or different localities. In the result the number of species has been augmented, instead of reduced as was expected. Tupinambis Nigropunctatus Spix, 1825. Specimens from Trinidad apparently have the scales somewhat larger and the femoral pores in greater number. The pores range from fourteen to seventeen. The species is called "Matt" by the natives. What a plea against such methods was the whole life Of Prof. Agassiz! There are being made Well directed efforts, in some Of our cities and towns, to have the subject introduced into the common schools, and this fact, with the other fact that the subject is in our high school pro grammes, permits us to estimate the condition of natural history in the schools to-day. The reason for the present state of things is perhaps unimportant, but it is not because educators for half a cen tury have not been agreed as to the principles which govern the case. It is curious to observe that in the face of this agreement, and the fact that the statement of the principles has become so frequent in convention as to be almost stale, few in authority have essayed to take the first logical step in the indicated direction. The Speaker prefaced his remarks upon the condition of natural Science as it ought to be in the schools, by saying that he was not a proficient in the subject, and in no sense a specialist, being person ally more interested in other subjects. Brooks, the Executive Committee prepared a full report of the work of the Institute during the past year. This report was read by President Rantoul. It showed that the year just closed had been a prosperous one for the Institute, and while the work of the Society had been hampered by the continued illness of the Secretary, the Assistant Librarian and the 2d Assistant Librarian, yet the routine work had been carried on and the Institute was in good condition, - its publications had contained articles of great merit which must prove of value to the historical and scientific student. The regular lectures and the less formal meetings, where papers were read by members of the Institute, were noted and highly commended. The matter of field meetings was considered and a continuance advised. The pressing need of more room for the many hundreds of volumes received by donation during the past year was referred to and a strong appeal for the necessary funds to bring about this much desired result was made. Reference was made to the death of Mr. William J. Foster, who had of late been of great assistance at the rooms during the illness of the Secretary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, 1884, Vol. 15 You find among the Swedes many peculiar superstitions, which seem to cling with great tenacity from by-gone times. So, for instance, it is the custom for chambermaids or others, making the beds in the morning, not to leave an unfinished bed under any pretext to go to any other work, for fear that the person that is to occupy it may not rest easily. In most Swedish stables you will find a dead crow or blackbird hung over each horse, which is considered a sure prevention for the evil one riding the horse in the stable at night, and it is asserted by the farmers that when such prevention is not taken the horses are found in the morning foaming at the mouth, sweaty and blowing hard, as if just arrived from a furious drive. In my boyhood, whenever a person sneezed it was considered polite for bystanders to say "God save you" or "Prosit;" and the more popular a person was in society the more people were ready to say "God save you" in case of sneezing.
