Download or read book Plastics in Building Structures written by D. S. Mahon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plastics in Building Structures covers the proceedings of a conference, held in London on June 14-16, 1965. This conference focuses on the applications of plastics materials in structures. This book emerged from 39 papers presented at the conference. The introductory papers describe the properties of plastics in relation to building structures, and the economic aspects, fire regulations, and flammability of these materials. Considerable papers are devoted to various areas of application of plastics, including adhesives, polymer cements, cored chipboard units, and glued timber. These topics are followed by discussions on the characterization, design, and structural and physical properties of plastics. The final chapters review the commercial development and applications of plastic materials. This book will prove useful to engineers, designer, manufacturers, and researchers in the allied fields.
Book Synopsis Lightweight Sandwich Construction by : J. M. Davies
Download or read book Lightweight Sandwich Construction written by J. M. Davies and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandwich panels are being used increasingly as the cladding of buildings like factories, warehouses, cold stores and retail sheds. This is because they are light in weight, thermally efficient, aesthetically attractive and can be easily handled and erected. However, to date, an authoritative book on the subject was lacking. This new reference work aims to fill that gap. The designer, specifier and manufacturer of sandwich panels all require a great deal of information on a wide range of subjects. This book was written by a group of European experts under the editorship of a UK specialist in lightweight construction. It provides guidance on: * materials used in manufacture * thermal efficiency and air- and water-tightness * acoustic performance * performance in fire * durability * special problems of sandwich panels in cold stores and chill rooms * architectural and aesthetic considerations * structural design at the ultimate and serviceability limit states * additional structural considerations including fastenings, the effect of openings and the use of sandwich panels as load-bearing walls * test procedures The book concludes with some numerical design examples and is highly illustrated throughout.

Book Synopsis Cold War Hothouses by : Beatriz Colomina
Download or read book Cold War Hothouses written by Beatriz Colomina and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technological innovation and unprecedented physical growth of the cold war era permeated American life in every aspect and at every scale. From the creation of the military-industrial complex and the beginnings of suburban sprawl to the production of the ballpoint pen and the TV dinner, the artifacts of the period are a numerous and diverse as they are familiar. Over the past half-century, our awe at the advances of postwar society has softened to nostalgia, and our affection for its material culture has clouded our memories of the enormous spatial reorganizations and infrastructural transformations that changed American life forever.

Book Synopsis Creep Behavior of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) by : Dwight McDonald
Download or read book Creep Behavior of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) written by Dwight McDonald and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural insulated panels (SIPs) have been recognized as construction materials in the International Residential Code (IRC) since 2009. Although most SIPs are used in wall applications, they can also be used as roof or floor panels that are subjected to long-term transverse loading, for which SIP creep performance may be critical in design. However, limited information on creep performance of SIPs under transverse loading is available. Collaborative pilot studies were undertaken by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and APA-The Engineered Wood Association to explore the creep behavior of SIPs under bending- and shear-critical configurations. Results from these pilot studies will serve as the basis for more comprehensive future studies. This paper provides detailed test results from these pilot studies.
