Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Many years ago, I decided to write a book about the Rideau Canal. It is, therefore, with mixed feelings that I see that Robert Legget has beaten me to the tape. He is to be congratulated ... The definitive work on the Rideau has been written, and I shall value my copy.' Eric Arthur Since the publication of the first edition in 1955, Rideau Waterway has informed and delighted readers, among them historians, engineers, and vacationers. First revised in 1972, this classic guide has once again been brought up to date in a new edition. Robert Legget offers a rich history of the Rideau Canal – an adventure in engineering, built by soldiers and civilian labourers through swamp, bush, and rocky wilderness – as well as a guide to current places of interest along the waterway and stories of the pioneers who settled there. He resurrects the controversy surrounding Colonel John By, Superintending Engineer of the construction of the canal, whose leadership was debated in the British press and after whom By town was named. By town is now Ottawa; Legget traces the city's development from construction camp to national capital. This new edition contains three times as many photographs as the original, and has been even more thoroughly updated than was the revised edition of 1972. Legget has added new information about historical figures and references to developments in the surroundings: the St Lawrence Seaway, the Carillon hydroelectric project, new roads, new bridges, and more. The appendices have been revised to include the latest maps, charts, and fishing information available. In all, Legget has provided a lively guide for boaters and other travellers, and for all those interested in the history of eastern Ontario.

Download or read book The Rideau Canal written by Paul Schliesmann and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the Rideau Canal and Kingston Fortifications were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A trip to any of the 24 lock stations along the 202-kilometre waterway, or to Fort Henry and the Martello towers in Kingston, reveals why the Rideau has earned this distinction. The historical sites are remarkably well-preserved and the canal system continues to operate almost exactly as it did when completed in 1832. Rideau Canal: A Historical Guide was written and illustrated to provide visitors with a historical overview of the waterway's origins, the story of its supervising engineer and creator Lt.Col. John By, as well as insights into its operations and construction. The book contains dozens of full-color photos of the canal as it looks today and historical paintings from the time of its building.

Book Synopsis The Ottawa River Canal System by : Normand Lafrenière
Download or read book The Ottawa River Canal System written by Normand Lafrenière and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a brief history of the Ottawa River canal system from the time construction began until 1963. Although the Carillon Canal (a national historic park) would normally have been the focal point of such an undertaking, a specific study of this canal proved virtually impossible owing to the lack of information pertaining to its initial construction period. Records of the commercial use of the canal over the years were equally sparse. Fortunately, however, the history of the Carillon Canal is closely linked with that of several other canals (the Vaudreuil, St. Anne's, Chute-a-Blondau, and Grenville canals) constructed on the lower Ottawa River in the early 19th century. As a consequence this study encompasses the entire Ottawa River canal system.

Book Synopsis Military Paternalism, Labour, and the Rideau Canal Project by : Robert W. Passfield
Download or read book Military Paternalism, Labour, and the Rideau Canal Project written by Robert W. Passfield and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studies of the Rideau Canal construction project, Labour historians have focused on the suffering of the canal workers, and have posited that the military deployed troops to suppress labour unrest and were indifferent to the suffering of the workers. This book provides a different perspective through placing the canal project within its natural and physiccal environments, and through taking into account cultural factors in examining the labour as it evolved during the construction of the canal. Within that broader framework, a totally different view emerges with respect to the causes of the suffering experienced by the canal workers, and the role of the military on the canal project. Moreover, the paternalism of Lt. Col. John By is revealed in his efforts to promote the physical, material, and moral well-being of the canal workers. Lastly, the phenomenon of military paternalism is examined further within a Marxist context, and in terms of Anglican toryism and and Lockean liberalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I will share a year on the canal with you. I will show you the breakup when the river comes alive with wildlife, and the early spring when the canal is being readied for use. The summer section needed few words, yet you may be surprised at the variety and wealth of watercraft that come by Manotick. In the fall, I will show you the almost unbelievable scale of the Canada geese migration right on our doorstep and then finally the canal workers as they look ahead to repair and prepare the canal for yet another navigation season. I have included an abridged course on engineering 101 so you can get a sense of the hidden features of the design that surrounds us. I have also included an historical section as to ‘Why’ the canal needed to be built. You can get a sense of the book by looking at this short video https://youtu.be/nnqtcDj9j8U Many of the photographs I have uploaded to the website https://rideaucanaldiary.blogspot.com/
