Batik is a remarkably flexible textile technique and is suited to small-scale methods of production, but demand from the fashion and tourism industries is increasing. Firstly, poor countries with some 3 billion people have broken into the global market for manufactures and services, and this successful integration has generally supported poverty reduction. Secondly, inclusion both across countries and within them is important as a number of countries (pop. 2 billion) are failing as states, trading less and less, and becoming marginal to the world economy. Thirdly, standardization or homogenization is a concern - will economic integration lead to cultural or institutional homogenization?

The book takes a multidisciplinary approach in the context of which several perspectives on globalisation are developed. The starting-point of the colloquium was a paper by Hendrik Opdebeeck with the title 'The globalisation discourse and the waning of ethical endeavour'. The issue at stake in this text is a personalistic approach towards a socially and economically most pressing phenomenon. This approach also occurs within a critical atmosphere which clearly points to distortions with respect to ethics. Within a personalistic perspective, founded in a Christian tradition of ethical discourse, it is not a sheer adaptation or legitimisation that is opted for, but a profound and critical reading of the signs of the times.

This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the role of transnational financial associations (TFAs) in the organization of global finance. This book develops three theoretical themes of assemblage, functionality, and power as enrolment. These themes challenge approaches that treat financial power as emanating from a single location or force. Whilst existing approaches tend to treat TFAs as irrelevant or as merely transmitting power originating elsewhere, this book argues that power must be created by painstakingly assembling actors, networks, and objects that are often quite autonomous and working at cross purposes to one another—a process in which TFAs play a central role.
