It’s also about having the proper cash flow to meet expenses when they arise. There are many places where money is spent and many opportunities for costs to get out of control. Cost control in construction is the difference between making a profit and absorbing a loss in many cases. This guide breaks down what cost control is and how to improve your own processes. Cost control in construction is the process by which managers keep expenses under control by managing labor, material, and overhead costs to ensure that the project finishes on budget. Cost control relies on sound estimates and constant monitoring over the course of a project. Without cost control, a project quickly burns through its budget and leaves the construction firm with very little profit or even a loss. As a result, good cost control is a must for any construction business that wants to be successful.

Book excerpt: Banksters, Bosses, and Smart Money uncovers the causes of one city's economic collapse by tracing the interlocking directorships, political machines, and insider deals that made quick fortunes for the well-connected while jeopardizing the savings of tens of thousands of depositors. It documents how the power of the city's financial elites continued even after the calamitous bank crash of 1931, skewing the liquidation of insolvent banks in their favor and shielding those responsible from criminal prosecution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of “Five Best Books about Wartime Presidents”—Michael Bechloss, The Wall Street Journal From Lyndon Johnson’s closest domestic adviser during the White House years comes a book in which “Johnson leaps out of the pages in all his raw and earthy glory” (The New York Times Book Review) that’s been called “a joy to read” (Stephen Ambrose, The Washington Post Book World). And now, a new introductory essay brings the reader up to date on Johnson’s impact on America today. Califano takes us into the Oval Office as the decisions that irrevocably changed the United States were being crafted to create Johnson’s ambitious Great Society. He shows us LBJ’s commitment to economic and social revolution, and his willingness to do whatever it took to achieve his goals. Califano uncorks LBJ’s legislative genius and reveals the political guile it took to pass the laws in civil rights, poverty, immigration reform, health, education, environmental protection, consumer protection, the arts, and communications. President Lyndon Johnson was bigger than life—and no one who worked for him or was subjected to the “Johnson treatment” ever forgot it. As Johnson’s “Deputy President of Domestic Affairs” (The New York Times), Joseph A. Califano’s unique relationship with the president greatly enriches our understanding of our thirty-sixth president, whose historical significance continues to be felt throughout every corner of America to this day. A no-holds-barred account of Johnson’s presidency, The Triumph & Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson is an intimate portrait of a President whose towering ambition for his country and himself reshaped America—and ultimately led to his decision to withdraw from the political arena in which he fought so hard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-1980s, public opinion in the USSR had begun to turn against Soviet involvement in Afghanistan: the Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989) had become a long, painful, and unwinnable conflict, one that Mikhail Gorbachev referred to as a "bleeding wound" in a 1986 speech. The eventual decision to withdraw Soviet troops from Afghanistan created a devastating ripple effect within Soviet society that, this book argues, became a major factor in the collapse of the Soviet Union. In this comprehensive survey of the effects of the war on Soviet society and politics, Yaacov Ro'i analyzes the opinions of Soviet citizens on a host of issues connected with the war and documents the systemic change that would occur when Soviet leadership took public opinion into account. The war and the difficulties that the returning veterans faced undermined the self-esteem and prestige of the Soviet armed forces and provided ample ammunition for media correspondents who sought to challenge the norms of the Soviet system. Through extensive analysis of Soviet newspapers and interviews conducted with Soviet war veterans and regular citizens in the early 1990s, Ro'i argues that the effects of the war precipitated processes that would reveal the inbuilt limitations of the Soviet body politic and contribute to the dissolution of the USSR by 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it is politics, journalism or literature the most talked about topic today is undoubtedly “corruption.” This book deals with it throughout. Each page of Bleeding Mountains of Nepal is a ghastly tale of how the country is run by people whose unsaturated greed and avarice for power and perks and their dereliction of duty may be unmatched by anyone anywhere in the world. The book is a verification of how national resources, funds and revenue, foreign loans and assistance are pillaged, pilfered, plundered, abducted, swindled, embezzled, robbed, looted and predated by the very bottom to the top level in the government machinery and also by those outside the government. The whole book is a document of how the country is being fleeced, milked and wrenched at all times by the insiders, outsiders, donor agencies and the NGOs. It speaks of Nepal and its teeming millions squirming below the poverty line, forever exploited. It is a story of Nepal’s failed development of the last fifty years—the tears behind the smile—the smile that does not reach the eyes. It is particularly helpful to those who want to write, study and research on corruption and mismanagement in Nepal.

Book excerpt: Now you know Veluppillai Prabhakaran and his LTTE, who held sway in the modern Srilanka are the products of certain unfortunate sociopolitical conditions which every sensible state should fight to avoid their germination . If we do not learn from history, the history teaches us in a cruel way. This is the story of the enchanting South Asian Island Srilanka; Of the intelligent, enterprising, and proud Tamils of the Island; Of their sociopolitical equation with the Sinhalese partners ; Of the formidable LTTE ; and of their fearsome, leader Prabhakaran who was also fearful for his life all the time. This book also tells the inside stories of LTTEs birth, growth and death. Their violence, assassinations, and why and how they killed Padmanabha, Rajiv Gandhi, Amirthalingam, Premadasa and Mahataya among many others. The tale of their fund raising ; their affluence; their Air Tigers; their Sea Tigers; their Black Tigers and their ultimate downfall. Not the fall of the LTTE but of Srilankan Tamils hopes. This is also the story of brave fighters and unscrupulous leaders. Story of heroism and treachery. History of mankind would not forgive us if we allow this to happen again, in any form, anywhere in earth.

Dolores Durer, a divorced English professor and the mother of two adult children, has sworn off love after a series of disastrous affairs. Electronics executive Victor Morrissey is in England to open a branch office. He has four children and is unhappily married. From the moment they meet—on a train—their connection is instant and passionate. The two Americans abroad embark on an affair that will have consequences in both their lives. Each carries baggage.
