Frühjahrstagung des INMM im April 2010 basieren. Die Aufsätze sind von Autoren/innen diverser Fachbereiche: Es gibt sowohl wissenschaftliche Beiträge von Musik- / Tanzwissenschaftlern wie auch Beiträge von Komponisten, Performance und Intermedia-Künstlern. Aus dem Inhaltsverzeichnis wird, wenn namentlich nicht bekannt, nicht ersichtlich, welche Beiträge von Künstlern und welche von Wissenschaftlern verfasst wurden. Der Sammelband besteht aus einem Vorwort des Herausgebers, 11 Aufsätzen zu den Themenblöcken der Tagung und einem abschließendem reflektierenden Aufsatz von Peter W. Schatt. Die Künstlerbeiträge befinden sich in der Mitte des Buches, wobei zwischen drittem und viertem Künstlerbeitrag ein wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz eingeschoben ist. Ohne die Themenblöcke der Tagung zu kennen, die nicht als Kapitelüberschriften - wie sonst üblich - übernommen wurden, erscheint die Strukturierung des Bandes unklar. Die Aufsätze sind nach den Themenblöcken der Tagung gegliedert, wobei nicht alle Vorträge der Tagung in Aufsätzen vertreten sind und die Reihenfolge der Aufsätze innerhalb eines Themenblockes zum Teil geändert wurde. Themenblock I enthält die drei wissenschaftlichen Aufsätze mit „Grundüberlegungen“ zum zeitgenössischen Musiktheater. Der zweite Themenblock beschäftigt sich mit „Öffnungen des Musiktheaters“ und besteht aus zwei wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen sowie drei Künstlerbeiträgen. In Themenblock III behandeln zwei tanzwissenschaftliche Aufsätze und ein Künstlerbeitrag das Thema „Tanz – Körper – Bewegung“. Themenblock IV ist dem Musiktheater von Wolfgang Rihm gewidmet, ist aber durch nur einen Aufsatz vom Komponisten Jörg Mainka komplett untervertreten. Die Vorträge von Ulrich Mosch und Wolfgang Lessing sind nicht im Sammelband enthalten. Die wichtige Verbindung von Wolfgang Rihm mit Artauds „Theater der Grausamkeit“ fehlt durch den nicht abgedruckten Vortrag von Wolfgang Lessing völlig. Das Gespräch von Jörn Peter Hiekel mit Wolfgang Rihm wurde ebenfalls nicht transkribiert. Der in der Tagung durch drei Vorträge und einem Gespräch gut vertretene Themenblock wird im Sammelband durch nur einen Aufsatz an den Rand gestellt.

He focuses on the dynamic, fast, and pre-reflective processes underlying our interactions with music—whether we are playing an instrument, dancing, listening, or using new interactive technologies. Music offers a well-established domain for studying these fast and interactive processes, and Leman argues that understanding the power of expressive interaction through music may help us understand cognitive processing in other domains, including language, human action coordination, human-animal interaction, and human-machine interaction. Leman regards expressive interactions with music as energizing and empowering. He argues that music is based on patterns that intervene with a reinforcing loop in the human brain, strengthening learning, motivation, and reward. He argues further that the reinforcing effect is influenced by the interaction flow, by fast processes that handle expressive qualities on the fly. Leman sets out the framework in which expressive interaction is situated, describing, among other things, a pragmatic model of communication in which the fundamental components are enactment and dynamics. He looks in more detail at the cognitive-motivational architecture, discussing sensorimotor and motivational schemes. In Digital Performance, Steve Dixon traces the evolution of these practices, presents detailed accounts of key practitioners and performances, and analyzes the theoretical, artistic, and technological contexts of this form of new media art. Dixon finds precursors to today's digital performances in past forms of theatrical technology that range from the deus ex machina of classical Greek drama to Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk (concept of the total artwork), and draws parallels between contemporary work and the theories and practices of Constructivism, Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism, Futurism, and multimedia pioneers of the twentieth century. But how do we perceive an experience that encompasses the just-was and the is-about-to-be as much as what is actually present? In Semblance and Event, Brian Massumi, drawing on the work of William James, Alfred North Whitehead, Gilles Deleuze, and others, develops the concept of “semblance” as a way to approach this question. It is, he argues, a question of abstraction, not as the opposite of the concrete but as a dimension of it: “lived abstraction.” A semblance is a lived abstraction. Massumi uses the category of the semblance to investigate practices of art that are relational and event-oriented—variously known as interactive art, ephemeral art, performance art, art intervention—which he refers to collectively as the “occurrent arts.” Each art practice invents its own kinds of relational events of lived abstraction, to produce a signature species of semblance. The artwork's relational engagement, Massumi continues, gives it a political valence just as necessary and immediate as the aesthetic dimension.
