A land of paradise, a world of wonder, buried deep in the enchanted forest, nestled at the foothills of the mountains, a dream came true. A vision his grandfather had for quite some time of such a beautiful and bountiful place, one to call home. This is a story of family and friends that shared the sweetness of love and touched the hard core of survival. As a cub, Little Guh experienced fun and adventure as well as growing pains. He was stricken with hardship at a young age that placed him in a dismal state of mind, with his biggest challenge yet to come. He now had a critical choice to make, one that would impact everyone around him. Life lessons taught him well to love and hope, whether he understood or not; to be kind; to press on and persevere against the odds; turn weakness to strength; and search to find the things that make a difference. He learned in its truest form that life stood still for no one. Little Guh found what mattered most was to face his fears. To overcome and conquer and answer the calling was the difference in life or death. He found that not all things were taught, but some things would come as a gift from deep inside. The truth in his heart would set him free and strengthen his love for family, friends, and home. It is best expressed in his grandfather's words: "the roar of a bear is the roar of truth," A season of love will last forever. Love Bears All

Book excerpt: Ray Charles: Man and Music is a complete biography of this seminal singer/pianist who has been active on the American music scene since the mid-'50s. Originally published in 1995 by Penguin Books, and universally hailed as the definitive biography, this new edition will bring Charles's life up to date, covering the last 7 years of his life. There are only a few legendary singers who have developed mass audiences while pursuing their own artistic visions: Sinatra is one; Ella Fitzgerald another. Ray Charles undoubtedly belongs in this pantheon of major musical stars. Ray Charles: Man and Music begins with Charles's impoverished childhood in Greenville, Florida, where tragedy struck early when the young Charles went blind at age 6 and was orphaned at age 14. Driven by his enormous talent and determination, Charles landed work playing some of the toughest juke joints in the state, fought heroin addiction, and finally landed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Unlike other R&B singers, Charles took control of his career from its earliest days, moving on from his gospel-soul stylings of the mid-'50s to break through musical barriers, recording two country albums in the late '50s (at a time when the black presence in country music was barely felt), pure jazz, and then the powerful pop hits of the '60s. Famed music journalist Michael Lydon - a founding editor of Rolling Stone - is uniquely qualified to document Charles's career, having interviewed Charles and followed the star's performances since the 1960s. Originally published in 1995, and universally hailed as the definitive biography, this new edition brings Charles's life up to date, covering the last 7 years of his life. It coincides with the release of a made-for-TV movie starring Jamie Fox as Charles, currently in production by Taylor Hackford. Charles has also issued a new CD recently and remains active as a touring artist throughout the world.

Book excerpt: A giant redneck in Fairyland, what could possibly go wrong? Everything. Absolutely everything. Monsters, Magic, & Mayhem collects four novella chronicling Bubba the Monster Hunter's trip through the lands of the Fae in search of his kidnapped sister. Yeah, he didn't know he had a sister, either. And that joke's old, man. Into the Mystic - Bubba and his troupe of merry morons has to find their way to Fairyland to rescue his sister. It's not as easy as it sounds, and it involves Bubba learning a lot of uncomfortable truths about why his mother walked out, and his maybe not-quite human heritage. Cold as Ice - Bubba meets his grandmother, which should be great. Except she's the psychotic Queen of the Winter Court and wants to pretty much murder everyone. There's torture, tights, and Bubba dancing. Which is pretty much torture in tights. So lots of torture. Hot Blooded - Bubba and Co. travel to the Summer Court in their Quest for the Sister, only to find that his grandfather, while less abjectly psychopathic than his ex-wife Mab, is still kind of a douche. And just when the team thought they were on the right track to finish their quest, there's a dragon. A dragon. This is not something growing up in Georgia prepares you for. Shades of Grey - Bubba is closing in on his sister and her kidnapper, the Shakespearean trickster Puck. Except, he's not like hot Loki trickster, he's more like cut your throat while you sleep and tell you a knock-knock joke while you're bleeding out trickster. Bubba has to battle his way through a horde of zombies just to get the opportunity to go on an old-fashioned dungeon crawl (with spiders, because...dungeon) to maybe finally confront Puck and save his sister. Then they get home and things get REALLY screwed up

However, their married life starts out rocky, with Amanda’s injuries from the accident causing health complications. Amanda and Jon find themselves dealing with a plethora of family issues, Amanda trying to win the approval of Jon’s family, to make peace with Andrew’s father, the powerful Senator Thomas Whitmore, and to maintain a relationship with her own brother Jeff. Jon is transitioning from the FBI into a career as an attorney in private practice. He is approached by Stephen Marks, the former Bishop of the Episcopal diocese and Amanda’s real father, disclosing a surprising turn of events and seeking Jon’s assistance in filing a probate and guardianship action involving the late Billy Barnes. In the meantime life in Mainville is changing. Dr. Howells has a scare with a heart attack. Both Charlie and Ralph are soon to be fathers. Ralph is putting his name up for the county judge vacancy, and Charlie has already qualified to run for sheriff. Amanda is surprised when she is approached by Esme Townsend, a wealthy and influential local woman, about applying for the judgeship. She declines, determined to support Ralph and to champion Charlie’s appointment for sheriff when the incumbent died. Out of the blue a dark-haired, dark-eyed beautiful woman shows up, a lobbyist promising Ralph her assistance in his bid for judge. The woman, Lauren Mallory, turns out to be a former acquaintance to Jon and later to David, and it is discovered that she had a sexual relationship with both several years earlier. Amanda is served with a paternity complaint filed against Jon. Reeling from this revelation, they receive a call that Ralph is in trouble. Arriving at Ralph’s home, they discover that a murder has occurred. When law enforcement responded to the call, David and Ralph were found at the house with the victim, and they are suddenly suspects. While crime scene operatives are crawling all over the house looking for evidence, Charlie gets the call from the governor that he has been appointed as sheriff and that he will lead the murder investigation. He finds himself suddenly at odds with his friends, and he and Amanda skirmish over the collection of evidence. During the murder investigation, evidence keeps mysteriously appearing, casting suspicion first at Ralph, then David, and even Jon as the possible suspects. Amanda is approached and threatened by a shadowy figure that she should apply for the judgeship or face the possibility of charges being brought against one or more of the men. She is blackmailed into keeping silent. Charlie and Amanda end up on opposite sides, and Amanda desperately fights the growing evidence against her husband and friends. Furthermore, she is faced with more and more information eroding her trust in Jon. As events unfold, Jon has to combat his own jealousy and suspicions about Amanda as well. Then, just as Amanda’s nerves are stretched to the breaking point, evidence is delivered to her that seems to point irrefutably to Jon’s continuing involvement in an affair with Lauren Mallory, and to his being the perpetrator of the murder.

Holmes, a brilliant scientist and an astute medical diagnostician had either dropped out or had been expelled from a London medical school. This, the first diary, records the adventures of Doyle and Holmes, when they accompany Dr. Bell to Chicago. Dr. Bell gives lectures and demonstrates his surgical technique with Doyle’s assistance. Holmes deduces the cause of death in a victim who collapsed on the street and Doyle becomes involved with the local medical students. Together, Doyle and Holmes uncover a plot by ex-confederate officers to assassinate the president and take over the United States. Their story will make you examine everything you believe. Vivvy Bouchet was only ten when she saved a boy’s life by making an impossible prediction. She doesn’t want to explain it. A wunderkind scientist, she just wants to be left in peace to scan the desert Texas sky with her telescopes in one of the darkest places on earth. But when the boy she saved, now a Fort Worth cop, begs for her help on a cold case, she can’t turn him down. In the past decade, Lizzie Solomon and the Victorian mansion where she disappeared have taken on almost mythic status. Conspiracy theorists feed the frenzy that Lizzie is still buried in the crumbling walls while her mother, who sits in prison convicted of killing her, loudly proclaims her innocence. Paired with a skeptical detective, Vivvy falls deeper into the mystery of why Lizzie has never been found. When a vicious podcaster takes aim at Vivvy’s own secrets—and those of the vanished girl—Vivvy’s life unravels like the mysterious galaxies she chases. Julia Heaberlin delivers a resilient and unforgettable heroine in Vivvy Bouchet, a woman who walks the line between evidence-based science and unexplained phenomenon. Sharply relevant, Night Will Find You explores the mysterious nature of belief―in science, in conspiracies, in a higher power―and the delicate dance with the things we can’t know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource, this book reviews current and historical examples of violence in film, television, radio, music, music videos, video games, and novels. Despite decades of attention and various attempts to enact legislation that limits violence in American popular culture, it remains ubiquitous across films, television, radio, music, music videos, video games, and popular fiction. Studies have shown that programs marketed to children are often remarkably violent and that viewing or otherwise consuming such violence has numerous negative effects on children's psychological health. This book sheds light on the scholarship related to violence in popular culture and compares historical and current examples, analyzing popular shows such as Game of Thrones, video games such as Mortal Kombat, young adult fiction including the trilogy The Hunger Games, and more. Not only does Violence in American Popular Culture provide a comprehensive review of the research about the effects of violence in media, but it also offers detailed assessments of violent content in various expressions of popular culture. In addition, it invites readers to compare violence in American popular culture with that globally via entries on violence in popular culture outside the United States. An appendix of additional resources and primary sources gives readers further tools for deepening their understanding of this complex and controversial issue.
