In addition, an explicit description of the boundary is given. In order to make this work as self-contained as possible and also accessible to non-experts in Bruhat-Tits theory, the construction of the Bruhat-Tits building itself is given completely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descent in Buildings begins with the resolution of a major open question about the local structure of Bruhat-Tits buildings. The authors then put their algebraic solution into a geometric context by developing a general fixed point theory for groups acting on buildings of arbitrary type, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the residues fixed by a group to form a kind of subbuilding or "form" of the original building. At the center of this theory is the notion of a Tits index, a combinatorial version of the notion of an index in the relative theory of algebraic groups. These results are combined at the end to show that every exceptional Bruhat-Tits building arises as a form of a "residually pseudo-split" Bruhat-Tits building. The book concludes with a display of the Tits indices associated with each of these exceptional forms. This is the third and final volume of a trilogy that began with Richard Weiss' The Structure of Spherical Buildings and The Structure of Affine Buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are a slightly revised and extended version of mim- graphed notes written on the occasion of a seminar on buildings and BN-pairs held at Oberwolfach in April 1968. Their main purpose is to present the solution of the following two problems: (A) Determination of the buildings of rank >; and irreducible, spherical type, other than ~ and H ("of spherical type" means "with finite Weyl 4 group", about the excluded types H, cf. the addenda on p. 274). Roughly speaking, those buildings all turn out to be associated to simple algebraic or classical groups (cf. 6. ;, 6. 1;, 8. 4. ;, 8. 22, 9. 1, 10. 2). An easy application provides the enumeration of all finite groups with BN-pairs of irreducible type and rank >;, up to normal subgroups contained in B (cf. 11. 7). (B) Determination of all isomorphisms between buildings of rank > 2 and spherical type associated to algebraic or classical simple groups and, in parti cular, description of the full automorphism groups of such buildings (cf. 5. 8, 5. 9, 5. 10, 6. 6, 6. 1;, 8. 6, 9. ;, 10. 4). Except for the appendices, the notes are rather strictly oriented - ward these goals.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to introduce a new notion of analytic space over a non-Archimedean field. Despite the total disconnectedness of the ground field, these analytic spaces have the usual topological properties of a complex analytic space, such as local compactness and local arcwise connectedness. This makes it possible to apply the usual notions of homotopy and singular homology. The book includes a homotopic characterization of the analytic spaces associated with certain classes of algebraic varieties and an interpretation of Bruhat-Tits buildings in terms of these analytic spaces. The author also studies the connection with the earlier notion of a rigid analytic space. Geometrical considerations are used to obtain some applications, and the analytic spaces are used to construct the foundations of a non-Archimedean spectral theory of bounded linear operators. This book requires a background at the level of basic graduate courses in algebra and topology, as well as some familiarity with algebraic geometry. It would be of interest to research mathematicians and graduate students working in algebraic geometry, number theory, and -adic analysis.

Book excerpt: The concept of symmetric space is of central importance in many branches of mathematics. Compactifications of these spaces have been studied from the points of view of representation theory, geometry, and random walks. This work is devoted to the study of the interrelationships among these various compactifications and, in particular, focuses on the martin compactifications. It is the first exposition to treat compactifications of symmetric spaces systematically and to uniformized the various points of view. The work is largely self-contained, with comprehensive references to the literature. It is an excellent resource for both researchers and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buildings are highly structured, geometric objects, primarily used in the finer study of the groups that act upon them. In Buildings and Classical Groups, the author develops the basic theory of buildings and BN-pairs, with a focus on the results needed to apply it to the representation theory of p-adic groups. In particular, he addresses spherical and affine buildings, and the "spherical building at infinity" attached to an affine building. He also covers in detail many otherwise apocryphal results. Classical matrix groups play a prominent role in this study, not only as vehicles to illustrate general results but as primary objects of interest. The author introduces and completely develops terminology and results relevant to classical groups. He also emphasizes the importance of the reflection, or Coxeter groups and develops from scratch everything about reflection groups needed for this study of buildings. In addressing the more elementary spherical constructions, the background pertaining to classical groups includes basic results about quadratic forms, alternating forms, and hermitian forms on vector spaces, plus a description of parabolic subgroups as stabilizers of flags of subspaces. The text then moves on to a detailed study of the subtler, less commonly treated affine case, where the background concerns p-adic numbers, more general discrete valuation rings, and lattices in vector spaces over ultrametric fields. Buildings and Classical Groups provides essential background material for specialists in several fields, particularly mathematicians interested in automorphic forms, representation theory, p-adic groups, number theory, algebraic groups, and Lie theory. No other available source provides such a complete and detailed treatment.

Heiermann and D. Prasad in Marseille at the CIRM for the Chaire Morlet event during the first semester of 2016. It assembles together expository articles on topics which previously could only be found in research papers. Starting with a very detailed article by P. Baumann and S. Riche on the geometric Satake correspondence, the book continues with three introductory articles on distinguished representations due to P. Broussous, F. Murnaghan, and O. Offen; an expository article of I. Badulescu on the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence; a paper of J. Arthur on functoriality and the trace formula in the context of "Beyond Endoscopy", taken from the Simons Proceedings; an article of W-W. Li attempting to generalize Godement–Jacquet theory; and a research paper of C. Moeglin and D. Renard, applying the trace formula to the local Langlands classification for classical groups. The book should be of interest to students as well as professional researchers working in the broad area of number theory and representation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an introduction to Berkovich’s theory of non-archimedean analytic spaces that emphasizes its applications in various fields. The first part contains surveys of a foundational nature, including an introduction to Berkovich analytic spaces by M. Temkin, and to étale cohomology by A. Ducros, as well as a short note by C. Favre on the topology of some Berkovich spaces. The second part focuses on applications to geometry. A second text by A. Ducros contains a new proof of the fact that the higher direct images of a coherent sheaf under a proper map are coherent, and B. Rémy, A. Thuillier and A. Werner provide an overview of their work on the compactification of Bruhat-Tits buildings using Berkovich analytic geometry. The third and final part explores the relationship between non-archimedean geometry and dynamics. A contribution by M. Jonsson contains a thorough discussion of non-archimedean dynamical systems in dimension 1 and 2. Finally a survey by J.-P. Otal gives an account of Morgan-Shalen's theory of compactification of character varieties. This book will provide the reader with enough material on the basic concepts and constructions related to Berkovich spaces to move on to more advanced research articles on the subject. We also hope that the applications presented here will inspire the reader to discover new settings where these beautiful and intricate objects might arise.

This concept is critical to physicists and mathematicians working in discrete mathematics, simple groups, and algebraic group theory, to name just a few areas. Almost twenty years after its original publication, Mark Ronan’s Lectures on Buildings remains one of the best introductory texts on the subject. A thorough, concise introduction to mathematical buildings, it contains problem sets and an excellent bibliography that will prove invaluable to students new to the field. Lectures on Buildings will find a grateful audience among those doing research or teaching courses on Lie-type groups, on finite groups, or on discrete groups. “Ronan’s account of the classification of affine buildings [is] both interesting and stimulating, and his book is highly recommended to those who already have some knowledge and enthusiasm for the theory of buildings.”—Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central concern of number theory is the study of local-to-global principles, which describe the behavior of a global field K in terms of the behavior of various completions of K. This book looks at a specific example of a local-to-global principle: Weil’s conjecture on the Tamagawa number of a semisimple algebraic group G over K. In the case where K is the function field of an algebraic curve X, this conjecture counts the number of G-bundles on X (global information) in terms of the reduction of G at the points of X (local information). The goal of this book is to give a conceptual proof of Weil’s conjecture, based on the geometry of the moduli stack of G-bundles. Inspired by ideas from algebraic topology, it introduces a theory of factorization homology in the setting l-adic sheaves. Using this theory, Dennis Gaitsgory and Jacob Lurie articulate a different local-to-global principle: a product formula that expresses the cohomology of the moduli stack of G-bundles (a global object) as a tensor product of local factors. Using a version of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz trace formula, Gaitsgory and Lurie show that this product formula implies Weil’s conjecture. The proof of the product formula will appear in a sequel volume.

Book excerpt: Pseudo-reductive groups arise naturally in the study of general smooth linear algebraic groups over non-perfect fields and have many important applications. This self-contained monograph provides a comprehensive treatment of the theory of pseudo-reductive groups and gives their classification in a usable form. The authors present numerous new results and also give a complete exposition of Tits' structure theory of unipotent groups. They prove the conjugacy results (conjugacy of maximal split tori, minimal pseudo-parabolic subgroups, maximal split unipotent subgroups) announced by Armand Borel and Jacques Tits, and also give the Bruhat decomposition, of general smooth connected algebraic groups. Researchers and graduate students working in any related area, such as algebraic geometry, algebraic group theory, or number theory, will value this book as it develops tools likely to be used in tackling other problems.
