Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Browning Cyclopedia: A Guide to the Study of the Works of Robert Browning, With Copius Explanatory Notes and References on All Difficult Passages The demand for a second edition of this work within three months of its publication is a sufficient proof that such a book meets a want, notwithstanding the many previous attempts of a more or less partial character which have been made to explain Browning "to the general." With the exception of certain superfine reviewers, to whom nothing is obscure - except such things as they are asked to explain without previous notice - every one admits that Browning requires more or less elucidation. It is said by some that I have explained too much, but this might be said of most commentaries, and certainly of every dictionary. It is difficult to know precisely where to draw the line. If I am not to explain (say for lady readers) what is meant by the phrase "De te fabula narratur" I know not why any of the classical quotations should be translated. If Browning is hard to understand, it must be on account of the obscurity of his language, of his thought, or the purport of his verses; very often the objection is made that the difficulty applies to all these. I have not written for the "learned," but for the people at large. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Study of Browning by Arthur Symons The following list of the published writings of Robert Browning, in the order of their publication, has been compiled mainly from Dr. Furnivall's very complete and serviceable Browning Bibliography, contained in the first part of the Browning Society's Papers (pp. 21-71). Volumes of "Selections" are not noticed in this list: there have been many in England, some in Germany, and in the Tauchnitz Collection, and a large number in America, where an edition of the complete works was first published, in seven volumes, by Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Co., Boston. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning and Whitman: A Study in Democracy The thoughts which prompt the several essays may be stated as follows God is a living will, who is realised by men and women in their practical activities and creations. To realise the will of God, by whatever institutional means of State or church or school, is the purport of democracy. Democracy cares supremely for the soul; this, before all laws, forms, institutions, policies, economics, is the one thing worthy of conserving. For the purposes of world-profession, art can no longer be separated from life. Art is the union of the real and the ideal, it is matter receiving spirit, it is spirit taking form. Art is a witness of ideality; at the same time it shows the possibility of the realisation of highest thought. Art points the way to life, and stimulates the personalities to action. Book excerpt: "Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors - Dante Alighieri, [Niccoláo] Machiavelli, and [Giovanni] Boccaccio - and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature."--Pub. desc.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Study of Robert Browning's Poetry by Robert Browning I waited some days after the arrival of your Book and Letter, thinking I might be able to say more of my sense of your goodness: but I can do no more now than a week ago. You "hope I shall not find too much to disapprove of" what I ought to protest against, is "a load to sink a navy-too much honor" how can I put aside your generosity, as if cold justice-however befitting myself- would be in better agreement with your nature? Let it remain as an assurance to younger poets that, after fifty years' work unattended by any conspicuous recognition, an over-payment may be made, if there be such another munificent appreciator as I have been privileged to find, in which case let them, even if more deserving, be equally grateful. I have not observed anything in need of correction in the notes. The "little Tablet" was a famous "Last Supper," mentioned by Vasari, (page. 232), and gone astray long ago from the Church of S. Spirito: it turned up, according to report, in some obscure corner, while I was in Florence, and was at once acquired by a stranger. I saw it, genuine or no, a work of great beauty. (Page 156.) "A canon," in music, is a piece wherein the subject is repeated- in various keys: and being strictly obeyed in the repetition, becomes the "Canon"-the imperative law-to what follows. Fifty of such parts would be indeed a notable peal: to manage three is enough of an achievement for a good musician We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
