Book excerpt: Life was tenuous for both young and old, and the photographer often worked against time to provide a family with images of the living before his efforts became memorial. Ping photographed people at work and play. Images abound of stiffly posed groups in front of sawmills, churches, schools, and lodge halls; families in front of cabins or newly framed houses; couples with buggies; and children at play.

Book excerpt: “Another fun novel full of humor, quirky country sayings, and descriptions of tantalizing comfort food meals” by the author of Biscuits and Slashed Browns (Kings River Life Magazine). Restaurateur Robbie Jordan is ready for the boost in business a local music festival brings to South Lick, Indiana, but the beloved event strikes a sour note when one of the musicians is murdered . . . June’s annual Brown County Bluegrass Festival at the Bill Monroe Music Park in neighboring Beanblossom is always a hit for Robbie’s country store and café, Pans ’N Pancakes. This year, Robbie is even more excited, because she’s launching a new bed and breakfast above her shop. A few festival musicians will be among Robbie’s first guests, along with her father, Roberto, and his wife, Maria. But the celebration is cut short when a performer is found choked to death by a banjo string. Now all the banjo players are featured in a different kind of lineup. To clear their names, Robbie must pair up with an unexpected partner to pick at the clues and find the plucky killer before he can conduct an encore performance . . . Includes Recipes! “Let me tell you the scene with the murderer is epic. Truly, there should be an award for the best encounter and climatic scene in a mystery, this book has it.”—Bibliophile.reviews

This story of his life and work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is an indispensible chapter in the art and cultural history of Indiana, the Midwest, and the nation. This revised edition of the 1966 classic includes 74 full color Steele paintings from the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, the Indiana University Museum of Art, and private collectors from around the state. These paintings, many of which have never been published, demonstrate the importance of Steele to the art world - in his time and in ours.

Book excerpt: In the 1920s, drawn by spectacular vistas and colorful fall foliage, photojournalist Frank Hohenberger (1876-1962) traveled to the hills of Brown County. Once there, he found more to photograph than just a picturesque landscape and he set out to record the lives of the people who lived among the hills. If You Don't Outdie Me is a brilliantly revealing volume about Hohenberger's encounter with the people of Brown County. Rather than a society of amusing and peaceful rustics, Hohenberger discovered that there were "tragedies in the valleys" and rancorous complexities that belied sentimental notions about small town life. Reproduced here are Hohenberger's incomparable photographs, not only the carefully crafted "art prints," but also the casual snapshots that show him to have been one of the pioneers of ethnographic photography. The book includes Hohenberger's previously unpublished diary notes, which record the humor, gossip, legends, oral history, figures of speech, and proverbs of the Brown County folk, as well as his astute and unguarded observations.

Armed with Oddball Indiana, you'll soon discover the strange underbelly of the Hoosier State, from brain sandwiches to square donuts. Indiana has monuments to Michael Jackson, the comic strip character Joe Palooka, and the World's Largest Egg. It's where Alka-Seltzer and Wonder Bread were invented, where A Christmas Story actually took place, and where the good but angry citizens of Plainfield conspired to dump President Martin Van Buren in a mud puddle. Along with humorous histories and offbeat observations, Oddball Indiana provides addresses, websites, hours, fees, and driving directions for each of its 350+ entries.

Curry Bohm was a talented and highly regarded landscape artist who is most commonly associated with Brown County, Indiana. Most consider him a leader of the second generation of Brown County painters. However, Curry's career and success expanded well beyond the borders of Brown County. The artist was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894. Much of his artistic training was received in Chicago. The Illinois metropolis served as an important focus for his career development and an outlet for exhibitions until the 1950s. Curry permanently moved to Brown County in 1930. Many of his works during the first half of his career portrayed landscapes painted in the Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee. Later, harbor and marine landscapes painted along coastal sites in Massachusetts and Maine provided new challenges and satisfaction for him over the second half of his career. Curry garnered success in all these artistic arenas. He won major awards at the Chicago Palette & Club in the early 1930s. He was awarded multiple exhibition prizes in East Coast shows during the 1950s. His Smoky Mountain and East Coast landscapes were major painting subjects for his showing in the Indiana Hoosier Salon exhibitions, from 1929-1967, where he won over twenty-five awards, including two Best in Show Awards. Curry Bohm, thus, became one of the leading painters in the Indiana arts community during the 20th century.

Book excerpt: In 1876, Congress issued a joint resolution recommending the preparation of local histories of every town and county for preservation in the Library of Congress. The W. H. Beers & Co. publishing house was a prolific producer of such histories. From the original 1883 publication, which ran over 1,000 pages, Heritage Books, Inc. has already reprinted sections dealing with the specific histories of Brown County and each of its townships. This book presents Part V from the original volume, a collection of nearly 1,000 biographical sketches of prominent men in each of the Brown County townships. Many of the subjects were still alive at the time of the original publication, so the majority of the biographies focus on the mid- to late-1800s. The sketches vary in the amount of information given, but generally they include the names of the subject s parents with relevant information about family heritage and immigration to the United States, the names of his wife, their children, and his wife s parents. The subject s professional or occupational history is usually recounted as well as his educational attainments, and his social, religious, and political activities. A surname index has been added, in which such names as the following appear: Baird, Brown, Campbell, Cochran, Davis, Day, Devore, Dunn, Ellis, Evans, Jones, Marshall, Martin, Miller, Moore, Smith, Thompson, White, Wilson, and Young.
