Book excerpt: Apart from the history of the old Town Hall and City Hall, this book provides an analysis of Council’s policies and the delivery of services and infrastructure that shaped Brisbane between 1985 and 2013. It provides a permanent record of Council accomplishments during a period of enormous change. Established three months before Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 one of the first issues that faced the new Brisbane Municipal Council was the need for a Town Hall. This publication brings to life the shortcomings of the old Town Hall and the forty-year battle to erect a more suitable facility, which became City Hall. The odyssey continued in the decade long financial struggle to construct Brisbane’s City Hall following the end of World War I. The Council’s aspirational vision for Brisbane, together with strategies and objectives, that make the city a great place to conduct business, work and live are embraced in the concept Brisbane – Australia’s New World City. Today, not only does Council provide the basic services but also must compete against other major cities, both in Australia and internationally, if Brisbane is to progress and not stagnate. With blue skies, a subtropical climate and outdoor lifestyle, Brisbane is positioned on the world stage as vibrant, innovative, clean and green, a great place to live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following are a few paragraphs from this inspiring and astonishingly detailed guide. The author, a native Australian, covers everything you might want to know about Queensland - guaranteed! The places to stay in every part of Queensland, from budget to luxury, rentals to B&Bs, the restaurants, from fast food to the highest quality, the beachwalks and bushwalks, the wildlife and how to see it, exploring the country by air, on water, by bike, and every other way. The immense state of Queensland nearly takes up Australia's entire northeastern quadrant, stretching from halfway up the rough-chiseled east coast all the way to the middle of the Gulf of Carpentaria. With a landmass of 1,727,200 sq km, it's the second-largest state after Western Australia, and it encompasses every environment imaginable. To the east, golden beaches and touristy surf towns are cloaked in thick swathes of rainforest, and fronted by palm-fringed islands in clear, azure bays. The verdant greenery runs right over the rugged Great Dividing Range, ending in high, windswept central plains and stark-red, dusty western deserts. This is Australia's holiday state, with a Florida-style beach culture and more than 300 sunny days every year. There's a ton to do for anyone and everyone, from just lazing on the sand to finding physical challenges galore. Hiking, watching wildlife, skydiving, and spelunking provide just a few tastes off the menu of grand land adventures, which are linked by scenic train and cable-car journeys, meandering back-road drives, and sprawling desert explorations. On the water, there are endless choices for sailing and kayaking, surfing, snorkeling, and diving along the coast and through the Great Barrier Reef. It's the most popular vacation spot in the country because everything's here: nature, culture, history, and adventure, all conveniently set upon a framework of modern towns and wrapped up in some of the world's wildest environments. Brisbane, the state capital, sits 15 mi/25 km inland from the Pacific along the banks of the serpentine Brisbane River. It's a perfectly modern city today, with glittering high-rise buildings and an abundance of green park areas, a surrounding of hilly suburbs, and a wealth of adventure opportunities. To the south, the Gold Coast continues in a line of hotels, restaurants, bars, and beaches; to the north, the Sunshine Coast is equally touristy, but more refined. Small coastal towns like Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Gladstone, and Rockhampton are major sightseeing spots and exit points to Queensland's famous offshore islands. Rockhampton, at the Tropic of Capricorn, roughly ends the southern third of Queensland, the region covered by this chapter. Head west of the coast from Brisbane to Rockhampton, and you'll find the scenic tropical forests covering the Great Dividing Range. Keep going, and you'll hit the gemfields, full of gold, rubies, sapphires, and other goodies. Past here, you're into the red Outback deserts. If there's one thing about Queensland, you'll never be bored for lack of new things to see or new adventures to try -and if you can choose just one destination in Australia, this power-packed state will give you the most for your money and time. The Land: Queensland may be massive, but its very different environments can be neatly divided into a half-dozen unique sectors which together hold some 31/2-million citizens. Although the state is so big it's been broken into three separate regions for this book, a general rundown of the varying outdoor scenes is covered here. You'll find a more detailed look at the land, flora, and fauna of the central and northern areas in the two following chapters. The coast, of course, is the primary focus of most visitors to Queensland, a landscape laced with clean white beaches, sparkling blue bays, and perfect, rolling surflines often punctuated by high, rocky outcrops and dizzying cliffs.

Tourists visiting the remarkable natural wonders in the rest of Queensland use Brisbane as their starting point and base, but there is much more to Brisbane than just the city centre. Agriculture and industry across Greater Brisbane contribute to its economy, providing employment for thousands of people. There are still uncrowded beaches and areas of bushland not far from the city centre, and the beautiful islands of Moreton Bay have historic sites that will intrigue any visitor interested in Brisbane's past.

Reduced costs have allowed the sequencing of thousands of plant lines or cultivars, leading to previously unobtainable insights into genetic impacts during breeding and generating large numbers of novel candidate breeding genes. This book summarizes the impacts that the genome sequencing revolution has had on agriculture with reference to applications across species and locations. It explains new techniques and their use in understanding epigenetics, breeding and conservation. It is a useful resource for scientists wanting to learn how different fields of agriculture have adapted novel genome sequencing technologies to their requirements, and for those wanting to transfer technologies and lessons learned from one field of agriculture to another. This book is a useful resource for students and researchers in biotechnology, genetics, genomics and breeding.

Hundreds of thousands more passed through the country between 1941 and 1945. Because of Japan’s conquest of the Philippines in 1942, Australia was transformed into the principle base for the United States Army in the Southwest Pacific. This American occupation of an allied country resulted in several areas of tension between friends. The examination of these “fault lines,” which have, for the most part, received little attention from historians, is the purpose of this book. Jurisdictional and policing disputes and problems between Australian workers and American authorities are examined. American personnel committed thousands of crimes during the occupation, many of which were notorious. How Australians reacted to these crimes and how the American military sought to limit their negative effect on wartime relations is a major focus of this book. How the US military tried to protect GIs from prosecution by spiriting them out of Australia is also explored. Other areas of tension such as race and gender relations, which have been looked at by other historians, are examined in a new light; this book provides novel insights and challenges the existing historiography with regard to relations between black Americans and Australian civilians. How leaders on both sides, in particular Douglas MacArthur and John Curtin, managed crises and relations between civilians and GIs are studied. Sexual relations, an area of particular concern for authorities, were directed towards short-term flings and prostitution. In contrast, authorities did all they could to discourage long-term relations (i.e., marriage). Authorities obsessed over interracial sexual relations and doubled efforts to discourage them. Conflicts between American personnel and Australian civilians during the occupation did not threaten the alliance against Japan. Nevertheless, there were myriad problems between allies that led to friction and ill-will. These problems demanded management from above.

Book excerpt: In an era of increasingly patient-centered healthcare, understanding how health and illness play out in social context is vital. This volume opens a unique window on the role of play in health and wellbeing in widely varied contexts, from the work of Patch Adams as a hospital clown, to an Australian facility for dementia treatment, to a New Zealand preschool after an earthquake, to a housing complex where Irish children play near home. Across these and other featured studies, play is shown to be shaman-like in its transformative dynamics, marshaling symbolic resources to re-align how patients construe and experience illness. Even when illness is not an issue, play promotes wellbeing by its power to reimagine, invigorate, enliven and renew through sensory engagement, physical activity, and symbolism. Play levels social barriers and increases flexible response, facilitating both shared social support and creative reassessment. This book challenges assumptions that play is inefficient and unproductive, with highly relevant evidence that playful processes actually work hard to dislodge unproductive approaches and thereby aid resilience. Solid research evidence in this book charts the course and opens the agenda for taking play seriously, for the sake of health. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Play.
