Book Synopsis Implications of Population Ageing by : Jonathan Boston
Download or read book Implications of Population Ageing written by Jonathan Boston and published by Institute of Policy Studies Victoria University of Welling. This book was released on 2006 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population ageing, both globally and in New Zealand, is often seen in negative terms, alongside economic and political instability, disease and environmental threats. But it can also be viewed positively - as an opportunity, an achievement of human civilisation and thus something to celebrate. Either way, there can be little doubt that population ageing will have important economic and social implications during the coming decades; hence, the subject deserves careful scrutiny. The contributors to the 14 chapters in this volume explore New Zealands changing demography and examine the many and varied policy implications of population aging, including those impinging on fiscal management, income support, the labour market, health care, housing and social services. The crucial message is that while population ageing undoubtedly poses serious challenges - for individuals, families, communities and the state - it also generates many opportunities and possibilities. It will be critically important to New Zealands long-term economic and social success for policy makers to recognise and grasp these opportunities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this book charts the emergence and rapid growth of Canada's powerful seniors' movement. Seniors' political clout has been increasingly evident since the mid-eighties, when their protest convinced Brian Mulroney to drop his efforts to limit pension benefits. Gifford's book provides a short history of seniors' organizing and tells the personal and organizational stories of today's seniors' groups. Sections on the work of seniors' groups in the United States and Europe add a global dimension to the book's analysis. Canada's Fighting Seniors is a pioneering study of the increasing organization and influence of older citizens in this country.

Book Synopsis Seniors and Climate Issues by : Gíslason, Stefán
Download or read book Seniors and Climate Issues written by Gíslason, Stefán and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2023-553/ The proportion of seniors in the Nordic population is increasing, along with rising average age and low birth rate. People of retirement age tend to have more free time and better finance than younger people, and are, in general, in better health than their peers used to be. These people have a lot of experience and knowledge that can be useful in the climate debate. With this in mind, Icelandic authorities initiated a special project on seniors and climate issues during Iceland’s chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2023. This report contains the results of this project, incl. mapping of the existence and activities of climate-related groups of older people in the Nordics, a summary from a seminar held in Reykjavík in September 2023 and recommendations to the authorities in the Nordic countries about what they could do to support the work of seniors on climate issues.
Book Synopsis Enhancing the Wellbeing and Wisdom of Older Learners by : Tess Maginess
Download or read book Enhancing the Wellbeing and Wisdom of Older Learners written by Tess Maginess and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhancing the Wellbeing and Wisdom of Older Learners: A Co-research Paradigm examines how lifelong learning, becoming wise, and sharing wisdom are integrally linked to older people’s wellbeing. The book highlights appropriate learning styles and pedagogies for older people, including research models emphasising participation, and offers recommendations for research in lifelong learning with the potential to effect change. Focusing upon a collaborative action research project, ‘Sagaciation’, chapters explore the involvement of older learners in the design and delivery of the scheme, which enabled them to expand their knowledge and skills, and to fully engage as critical and creative voices in a supportive and welcoming environment. The book offers an account of the process of the action research, as well as its findings. The project is set into the context of leading academic thinking on fields such as the growth of an ageing population, the rise of literature on ageing, negative and positive constructions of ageing, social gerontology, the wellbeing and health of older people, and educational gerontology. This book challenges negative representations of older people as a burden by offering a paradigm of hope, resilience, and sagacity within education and beyond. It will appeal to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of adult education, lifelong learning, gerontology, mental health and wellbeing, and the sociology of education, as well as to policymakers and those working with older people

Book Synopsis The Precarious Generation by : Judith Bessant
Download or read book The Precarious Generation written by Judith Bessant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on a wealth of evidence including young people’s own stories, to document how they are now faring in increasingly unequal societies like America, Britain, Australia, France and Spain. It points to systematic generational inequality as those born since 1980 become the first generation to have a lower standard of living than previous generations. While governments and experts typically explain this by referring to globalization, new technologies, or young people’s deficits, the authors of this book offer a new political economy of generations, which identifies the central role played by governments promoting neoliberal policies that exacerbate existing social inequalities based on age, ethnicity, gender and class. The book is a must read for social science students, human service workers and policy-makers and indeed for anyone interested in understanding the impact of government policy over the last 40 years on young people.

Book Synopsis Caregiving Contexts by : Maximiliane E. Szinovacz, PhD
Download or read book Caregiving Contexts written by Maximiliane E. Szinovacz, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007-08-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume represents a major step forward in the literature by placing its focus squarely on the caregiving context, its dimensions and how it shapes the process and outcomes of family care. The chapters locate care within the family, rather than a single individual....The family, in turn, in embedded within a larger cultural, community, and social context....These explorations of context will give us a broader view of how caregiving occurs. It will help us improve our theories about care and about the family's role in contemporary society....Care of our elders is an enduring and yet evolving part of life. The focus on context will help us understand, support and learn from the ways that families meet the challenges involved."--from the foreword by Steve H. Zarit, PhD, Professor and Head, Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Pennsylvania State University Here, in Caregiving Contexts, the editors and their chapter authors explore the ways in which demographic change will influence the availability of caregivers and how divergent welfare and ideological systems will affect care among family members and between family and formal care systems. They also discuss the differences in experience between spousal and adult child caregivers, special circumstances such as child or adolescent caregivers, and government and workplace policies that are available to support caregivers in the United States and in some European countries. No other volume is available on caregiving which explores the sociocultural, familial, and sociopolitical contexts that effect both care decisions and outcomes.
