Download or read book Richard Wagner written by Joachim Köhler and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major new biography of Richard Wagner is iconoclastic, astringent and bold. It explores the philosophical roots of Wagner's work, which the composer himself deliberately obfuscated. It re-evaluates Wagner's relationships with his mother, step-father and - most revealingly - his wife, Cosima, standing received opinion on its head. And he meets head on, and confirms, the controversy over Wagner's anti-semitism. At the same time, and notwithstanding, Kohler profoundly acknowledges Wagner's genius.
Book Synopsis Bounded Wilderness by : Kathryn Jasper
Download or read book Bounded Wilderness written by Kathryn Jasper and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bounded Wilderness, Kathryn Jasper focuses on the innovations undertaken at the hermitage of Fonte Avellana in central Italy during the eleventh century by its prior, Peter Damian (d. 1072). The congregation of Fonte Avellana experimented with reforming practices that led to new ways of managing property and relations among clergy, nobles, and the laity. Jasper charts how Damian's notion of monastic reform took advantage of the surrounding topography and geography to amplify the sensory aspects of ascetic experiences. By focusing on monastic landscapes and land ownership, Jasper demonstrates that reform extended beyond abstract ideas. Rather, reform circulated locally through monastic networks and addressed practical concerns such as property boundaries and rights over water, orchards, pastures, and mills. Putting new sources, both documentary and archaeological, into conversation with monastic charters and Damian's letters, Bounded Wilderness reveals the interrelationship of economic practices, religious traditions, and the natural environment in the idea and implementation of reform.
Download or read book Letters to Felice written by Franz Kafka and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Kafka met Felice Bauer in August 1912, at the home of his friend Max Brod. Energetic, down-to-earth, and life-affirming, the twenty-five-year-old secretary was everything Kafka was not, and he was instantly smitten. Because he was living in Prague and she in Berlin, his courtship was largely an epistolary one—passionate, self-deprecating, and anxious letters sent almost daily, sometimes even two or three times a day. But soon after their engagement was announced in 1914, Kafka began to worry that marriage would interfere with his writing and his need for solitude. The more than five hundred letters Kafka wrote to Felice—through their breakup, a second engagement in 1917, and their final parting in the fall of that year, when Kafka began to feel the effects of the tuberculosis that would eventually claim his life—reveal the full measure of his inner turmoil as he tried, in vain, to balance his desire for human connection with what he felt were the solitary demands of his craft.
Book Synopsis Rilke, Europe, and the English-Speaking World by : Eudo C. Mason

This book was released on 2011-08-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1961 text examines the complex of ambiguous attitudes which Rilke had towards Europe, in particular his hostility towards England and the English language. Professor Mason shows that Rilke identified England with forces which were robbing his Europe of its spiritual significance. The central passages of the Duino Elegies are thus seen from a fresh perspective.
