Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A challenge to the doctrine of biblical inerrancy that calls into question how Christians are taught more about the way of Whiteness than the way of Jesus Angela Parker wasn’t just trained to be a biblical scholar; she was trained to be a White male biblical scholar. She is neither White nor male. Dr. Parker’s experience of being taught to forsake her embodied identity in order to contort herself into the stifling construct of Whiteness is common among American Christians, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. This book calls the power structure behind this experience what it is: White supremacist authoritarianism. Drawing from her perspective as a Womanist New Testament scholar, Dr. Parker describes how she learned to deconstruct one of White Christianity’s most pernicious lies: the conflation of biblical authority with the doctrines of inerrancy and infallibility. As Dr. Parker shows, these doctrines are less about the text of the Bible itself and more about the arbiters of its interpretation—historically, White males in positions of power who have used Scripture to justify control over marginalized groups. This oppressive use of the Bible has been suffocating. To learn to breathe again, Dr. Parker says, we must “let God breathe in us.” We must read the Bible as authoritative, but not authoritarian. We must become conscious of the particularity of our identities, as we also become conscious of the particular identities of the biblical authors from whom we draw inspiration. And we must trust and remember that as long as God still breathes, we can too.

Book excerpt: When you're mad or worried or can't wake up in the morning, what can you do? Use the amazing superpower that you already have—breathing. Our newest offering from the bestselling creators of Good Night Yoga teaches kids fun and easy breathing practices based on the proven methods of yoga and mindfulness meditation. Sample practices: When something makes you mad or even feels unfair, try this counting breath and you’ll feel calmer there. Sit up and let your spine grow tall. Take a deep breath in, counting silently 1 . . . 2 . . . 3. Then let your breath out slowly, counting 1 . . . 2 . . . 3. When you go somewhere you’ve never been and you aren’t sure what to do, you can use a dandelion breath to feel more comfortable trying something new. Sit up and let your spine grow tall. Put one hand on your chest. Place your other hand on your belly. Take slow deep breaths and feel your chest and your belly move up and down as the air goes in and out of your body. At night when it’s hard to fall asleep because your mind is busy and your body feels tight, try balloon breath to get relaxed and ready for a good night. Lie down on your back and let your hands rest by your sides, palms up. Inhale through your nose and imagine filling your body with breath like a big balloon. Exhale and blow the air out through your mouth. What color is your balloon?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treating bodies as more than discursive in social research can feel out of place in academia. As a result, embodiment studies remain on the outside of academic knowledge construction and critical scholarship. However, embodiment scholars suggest that investigations into the profound division created by privileging the mind-intellect over the body-spirit are integral to the project of decolonization. The field of embodiment theorizes bodies as knowledgeable in ways that include but are not solely cognitive. The contributors to this collection suggest developing embodied ways of teaching, learning, and knowing through embodied experiences such as yoga, mindfulness, illness, and trauma. Although the contributors challenge Western educational frameworks from within and beyond academic settings, they also acknowledge and draw attention to the incommensurability between decolonization and aspects of social justice projects in education. By addressing this tension ethically and deliberately, the contributors engage thoughtfully with decolonization and make a substantial, and sometimes unsettling, contribution to critical studies in education.

FEATURED CUSTOMER REVIEW I want to start out by saying thank you for changing my life in a positive way. Back in 2005 my mother passed away, and I was having a difficult time sleeping. At that time, I saw in our local paper an article on the "Benefits of Proper Breathing to our Health," which mentioned a few resources, one of which was your Breathing Box. After purchasing it and trying your exercises while watching the DVD, I found myself sleeping much better than I ever did. This technique I learned from you did not give me these results overnight. It took probably several weeks for me to master the breathing techniques. For the last couple years, I have incorporated this type of breathing in my daily life with wonderful results. I can't thank you enough for how helpful this is to me. I have been meaning to write this testimonial to you much earlier. As you know, methodical deep breathing lowers your blood pressure and relaxes you—always helpful in this world we live in. I know that deep breathing is a time-tested and proven method, and it's only carried out by a few people, with me being one of them, thanks to you.—William Ruth

In his unique, confrontational manner, Hayzlett will coach small business owners and managers on topics such as: Give your business the mirror test - is your company really breathing? Here's how you and your company must adapt...or die. The bottom line of your business really is... your bottom line. You have to focus on it.
