Book excerpt: On October 16, 1995, a million black men- sons and brothers, husbands and fathers- made a commitment to ourselves that we would not shirk our duties as fathers to our children, loving husbands to our wives, and for a serious examination of our place in the world. It was on this day, in a speech by Minister Farrakhan, that I first heard about Willie Lynch. There was something about that part of his message that stuck with me for the past ten years. Scholars would say that it is too simplistic to attribute our failings to one person- one plan- one scheme, Willie Lynch. We are not that naïve, are we? And, anyway, if true, his effort at social engineering took place 300 years ago. In this book, I will attempt to explain, in broad terms, the negative results of that social engineering project of Willie Lynch. I will also make recommendations designed to combat it. I want to tell my readers how the cornerstone of black society, the family, has been eroded to the point of despair; the mindset that caused it, and some possible basic solutions. The educational system should be the easiest to fix. We must stop putting kids in bad learning situations, and leaving them to fail. We have choices and we must exercise those choices. The economic wealth of African Americans is larger than most countries in the world today. Yet we fail to benefit from that wealth. We are Bling-Bling Broke. We are the second largest voting block in the country, yet we have marginalized ourselves by voting for anyone who will promise us civil rights (The Democrats). They don’t deliver, yet we continue to vote the same way each election. To this day, the media will rarely portray Blacks in a positive way. The media has proven to be the most effective instrument of the Willie Lynch social engineering experiment. From the days of slavery the church played a vital role in the rebuilding of the moral foundation necessary for this society to grow strong and correct. The Willie Lynch legacy is the one consistent thread that seems to affect all of us. In 2006 we still occasionally exhibit social behavior reminiscent of the Willie Lynch legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reggie Ford's bold reassessment of the Black experience in America, he demonstrates that a new understanding of PTSD is required. PTSD, Perseverance Through Severe Dysfunction, as Ford defines it, underlines the darkness of mental health illnesses and behaviors that impact young Black men and have plagued Black Americans for generations. But his reassessment is not doom and gloom. Instead, Ford implores that we turn pain into peace. His uplifting message shows that by realizing, accepting, and treating mental health with grace, kindness, and appreciation of the backgrounds of those needing support, we can reduce the significant impact of PTSD and other mental conditions on not just Black, but all people.Ford uses his own traumatic experiences to inform his call to action. He takes his impoverished and scarred childhood and turns it into a life of promise and abundance. His memoir shines a light on the intergenerational impact of unaddressed mental health issues, showing how the power of a familial network can help or severely harm an individual's battle with mental health illnesses. He writes searingly of the overwhelming odds and systemic racism that must be overcome by Black Americans in order to reach the heights he has scaled. Ford's own heartbreaking story is yet an optimistic one, intended to show that mental health has a real and demonstrable effect on Black Americans, but that it can be overcome.PTSD places one man's experiences in the realm of the broad sociopolitical issues that affect so many Americans. Ford emphasizes that the trauma of society creates situations of mental health issues and behaviors that hold back so many. But he also believes there is room for hope, that his own experiences of overcoming so many hardships and difficulties offer a path for others to follow. Immense suffering, Ford believes, can lead to improbably success.

Alice Patterson demonstrates that now is the time to discuss what has divided us and how to bring transformation to our nation. In this book you will find reconciliation and racial healing in an unlikely place-the political arena. Is God interested in politics? Does He want you to get involved? Can ordinary citizens have real power instead of just influence? Can we empower evil powers without even realizing it? Is tolerance a virtue or a sin? These answers and more are found in Bridging the Racial & Political Divide.

Book excerpt: How could a church culture that lifted high the name of Jesus make covenant with the Confederacy? How did the Southern Baptist Convention lead the way? How do divided hearts and unholy covenants still hinder awakening in the conservative US church culture? What dramatic changes will a spirit of grace and supplication bring? We Confess! The Civil War, the South, and the Church uncovers the answers, historically and biblically. God is revealing what we haven't wanted to see, so we can become who we truly are. He promises to cleanse us from bloodguilt not yet cleansed, as we say what we haven't dared say. As we confess, healing, life, oneness, witness and true worship flow. As we confess, our Lord is honored and his kingdom furthered. So why don't we, who most tend to gravitate to the word "celebrate" when talking of the Civil War, instead throw all caution to the wind--and confess? Honest, compelling, courageous, redemptive, this remarkable look at the conservative church culture rooted in the Deep South explores such topics as king cotton and mighty oaks; the fast God has chosen; spiritual bulimia; spiritual schizophrenia; blood covenant; cleansing from bloodgui“/li> an undivided heart.

Book excerpt: There is a contagious psychospiritual disease of the soul, a parasite of the mind, that is currently being acted out en masse on the world stage via a collective psychosis of titanic proportions. This mind-virus—which Native Americans have called "wetiko"—covertly operates through the unconscious blind spots in the human psyche, rendering people oblivious to their own madness and compelling them to act against their own best interests. Drawing on insights from Jungian psychology, shamanism, alchemy, spiritual wisdom traditions, and personal experience, author Paul Levy shows us that hidden within the venom of wetiko is its own antidote, which once recognized can help us wake up and bring sanity back to our society.

Not only does she bring to the critical table a well-known but as yet understudied modernist author - an important endeavor in and of itself - but she also explores Forrest's novels' cultural dialogue with black ethnic culture and other African American authors, as well as provides in-depth readings of his prose and interpretations of his narrative style." "Forrest's highly experimental narrative style, his reinterpretation of modernism, and his transformations of black cultural traditions into literary aesthetics often pose challenges of interpretation for the reader and the scholar alike. As the first single-authored book-length study of Forrest's novel, this book offers readers pathways into his fiction. What this culturalist approach to the novels reveals is that Forrest's fiction was foremost concerned with investigating ways for the African American to survive in the contemporary moment. Through a variety of characters, the novels reveal the African American's art of transformation - the ability to find ways to make the wretchedness of the past work in positive ways."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Willie Lynch, a British slave owner from the West Indies, stepped onto the shores of colonial Virginia in 1712, bearing secrets that would shape the fate of generations to come. Within this manuscript, allegedly transcribed from Lynch’s speech to American slaveholders on the banks of the James River, lies a blueprint for subjugation. Lynch’s genius lay not in brute force but in psychological warfare. He understood that to break a people, one must first break their spirit. His methods—pitiless and cunning—sowed seeds of distrust, pitting slave against slave, exploiting vulnerabilities, and perpetuating a cycle of suffering. This document sheds light on the brutal realities of slavery and the ways in which its legacy continues to shape contemporary society
