Their home is a van that once traveled all over the world. Then one morning, Boris feels a jolt. Could it be? Is the van really moving? Is Boris on an adventure at last? But when Boris ends up on a trip to a wildlife refuge instead of the jungle safari he’d imagined, he ends up having an adventure he’ll never forget. Because for this little warthog, life never quite turns out as he plans. This series is part of Scholastic’s early chapter book line called Branches, which is aimed at newly independent readers. With easy-to-read text, high-interest content, fast-paced plots, and illustrations on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and stamina. Branches books help readers grow! “An early reader shaped just like a chapter book: What’s not to love? . . . For emergent readers who view themselves as accomplished (or wish to be seen that way), this . . . might just be the perfect choice . . . Full-color illustrations of his humorously anthropomorphized hog family and just one or two sentences of easy, large-print text per page make this an inviting read for transitioning readers.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the banjo's journey from Africa to the western hemisphere blends music, history, and a union of cultures. In Banjo Roots and Branches, Robert B. Winans presents cutting-edge scholarship that covers the instrument's West African origins and its adaptations and circulation in the Caribbean and United States. The contributors provide detailed ethnographic and technical research on gourd lutes and ekonting in Africa and the banza in Haiti while also investigating tuning practices and regional playing styles. Other essays place the instrument within the context of slavery, tell the stories of black banjoists, and shed light on the banjo's introduction into the African- and Anglo-American folk milieus. Wide-ranging and illustrated with twenty color images, Banjo Roots and Branches offers a wealth of new information to scholars of African American and folk musics as well as the worldwide community of banjo aficionados. Contributors: Greg C. Adams, Nick Bamber, Jim Dalton, George R. Gibson, Chuck Levy, Shlomo Pestcoe, Pete Ross, Tony Thomas, Saskia Willaert, and Robert B. Winans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to a society that has too many men? In this provocative book, Valerie Hudson and Andrea den Boer argue that, historically, high male-to-female ratios often trigger domestic and international violence. Most violent crime is committed by young unmarried males who lack stable social bonds. Although there is not always a direct cause-and-effect relationship, these surplus men often play a crucial role in making violence prevalent within society. Governments sometimes respond to this problem by enlisting young surplus males in military campaigns and high-risk public works projects. Countries with high male-to-female ratios also tend to develop authoritarian political systems. Hudson and den Boer suggest that the sex ratios of many Asian countries, particularly China and India—which represent almost 40 percent of the world's population—are being skewed in favor of males on a scale that may be unprecedented in human history. Through offspring sex selection (often in the form of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide), these countries are acquiring a disproportionate number of low-status young adult males, called "bare branches" by the Chinese. Hudson and den Boer argue that this surplus male population in Asia's largest countries threatens domestic stability and international security. The prospects for peace and democracy are dimmed by the growth of bare branches in China and India, and, they maintain, the sex ratios of these countries will have global implications in the twenty-first century.

The pandemic never happened here. That's the bad news. Now there are tanks in the streets. The good news is that there's a way out. Amid the chaos, one man is given the chance to escape his dystopian reality. But what will he find on the other side? Booklife raves that "lovers of alternate histories will find much that fascinates in this bold experiment in timelines and trauma." "Sometimes it feels like everything caught fire at once. The world took a wrong turn somewhere." What if you discovered the world really had taken a wrong turn? If you were offered a way out, would you take it? A man grieving the recent loss of his mother and traumatized by America's rapid descent into a fascist police state is shocked to discover the explanation for his mysterious seizures: He's in the wrong universe. A drug trial promises to return him to the branch where he belongs. But it might be too good to be true. Readers are calling Branches: A Novel "The Man in the High Castle for the age of doomscrolling," a fast-paced metaphysical journey that combines the history-bending science fiction of Philip K. Dick and the emotionally-rich dystopian worlds of Margaret Atwood with a sharp, original voice from debut author Adam Peter Johnson. Take a journey through the multiverse that shines a light on various crises playing out in America today, from political extremism to police brutality. It's a story that explores the road not taken, questions the nature of fate, and asks what it takes for one person to truly change their life. Branches: A Novel will make you look at the world in a new way in this deeply personal journey through fear, grief and redemption.
