Book excerpt: This Recommended Practice provides a common method to measure wear of friction materials (brake pad assemblies and brake shoes) and their mating parts (brake disc or brake drum). These wear measurements apply to brakes fitted on passenger cars and light trucks up to 4536 kg of Gross Vehicle Weight Rating under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), or vehicles category M1 (passenger cars up to nine occupants, including the driver) under the European Community's ECE Regulations. Measuring mass and thickness loss of friction materials (brake pad assemblies and brake-lined shoes) and their mating parts (brake discs or brake drums) is a common practice during most inertia dynamometer and vehicle tests. Mass and thickness loss are some of the main criteria to assess the performance and behavior of the wearable brake components. This makes repeatable and reproducible wear measurements a must. This Recommended Practice presents the default measurement methods for the parts in the friction couple. SAE J2986 can be considered as a companion document to supplement laboratory or vehicle test and measurement programs. The measurement methods presented in this Recommended Practice are useful to determine and report the mass and thickness properties (initial, intermediate, and final) of the friction couple or individual components. These measurements apply to brake parts preparation for mechanical testing, or other testing inducing wear or dimensional changes on the friction materials or their mating components.

Book excerpt: This SAE Recommended Practice covers equipment capabilities and the test procedure to quantify and qualify the shear strength between the friction material and backing plate or brake shoe for automotive applications. This SAE Recommended Practice is applicable to: bonded drum brake linings; integrally molded disc brake pads; disc brake pads and backing plate assemblies using mechanical retention systems (MRS); coupons from drum brake shoes or disc brake pad assemblies. The test and its results are also useful for short, semi-quantitative verification of the bonding and molding process. This Recommended Practice is applicable during product and process development, product verification and quality control. This Recommended Practice does not replicate or predict actual vehicle performance or part durability. The methodology for establishing percent material retention has been updated to directly identify an objective measurement technique. This allows for future test practitioners to generate comparable percent retention measurements between different locations. Percent material retention is a critical element to quantify as a part of the shear strength test procedure.

Book excerpt: This SAE Standard specifies a method for measuring the deflection of friction materials, noise insulators, and disc brake pad assemblies to be used in road vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating below 4336 kg.This part of the SAE J3079 includes the test for deflection and creep at various pressures under ambient temperature conditions. This SAE test method differs from SAE J2468 and ISO 6310 in the preload and maximum load applied to the test sample when deflection is measured. It also introduces additional measurements such as for deflection offset, hysteresis, and creep. This standard addresses brake pad deflection characteristics similar to SAE J2468 with the following refinements: The brake system pressure range is from 30 kPa to 13000 kPa Test results are summarized both graphically and in tabular format Includes guidelines to improve the accuracy and repeatability Includes a description of a test procedure for noise insulatorsThe deflection characteristics of friction materials, noise insulators, and disc brake pad assemblies are commonly used in caliper and brake system design as well as for quality control during manufacturing. Pad deflection influences many design characteristics including brake fluid consumption, caliper stiffness and mass, caliper piston retraction, and park brake adjustment. The deflection also influences performance characteristics including brake pedal travel, brake drag, park brake performance, and the propensity of the brake system to generate noise and roughness.

Book excerpt: This SAE Recommended Practice (RP) specifies a dynamometer test procedure to characterize wear rates of automotive service brake linings (brake shoes) and disc brake pads. This revision of the wear test procedure includes several changes to: (a) harmonize with other SAE Recommeded Practices (RPs), (b) modernize and expand the test sequences, and (c) address typographical and editorial corrections from previous versions. Some specific updates include the following: Harmonization with SAE J2789 for inertia calculation and with SAE J2986 for wear measurements. Expansion of the wear versus temperature (Method A) includes temperatures below 100 °C for friction materials with ferrous metals and decelerations below 0.3 g. These updates reflect normal customer usage and field measurements using the worldwide harmonized light vehicle test procedure (WLTP) adapted for a brake duty cycle. Extension of the block wear test (Method B) with separate temperatures for front and rear brakes and lower energy levels. Common burnish schedule for all test methods to ensure consistent conditioning in preparation for the actual wear test. The new burnish method harmonizes with the FMVSS 135 burnish, common in other inertia dynamometer tests.

Book excerpt: With current content and dynamic features, Brakes: Fundamentals of Automotive Technology bridges the gap by meeting and exceeding the applicable 2012 National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) Automobile Accreditation Task Lists for brakes. Automotive technicians need to know how to safely and effectively perform maintenance, diagnose, and repair brake systems on automobiles. Brakes: Fundamentals of Automotive Technology provides all of the critical knowledge and skills necessary for technicians of all levels to perform these essential tasks. Brakes: Fundamentals of Automotive Technology features: Current ContentApplicable 2012 brakes tasks are provided at the beginning of each chapter. The task tables indicate the level of each task--Maintenance & Light Repair (MLR), Auto Service Technology (AST), and Master Auto Service Technology (MAST), and include page references for easy access to coverage.Relaxed, Readable TextbookBrakes: Fundamentals of Automotive Technology is written in a clear, accessible language creating a learning environment in which students are comfortable with the material presented. That comfort level creates an effective and engaging learning experience for students, translating into better understanding and retention, ultimately leading to better pass rates. Reinforcement of ConceptsThis text is written on the premise that students require a solid foundation in the basics followed by appropriate reinforcement of the concepts learned. Reinforcement is provided with written step-by-step explanations and visual summaries of skills and procedures. Each chapter also concludes with a comprehensive bulleted list summarizing the chapter content, and ASE-Type questions to help students test critical thinking skills and gauge comprehension. The ASE-Type questions help students familiarize with the format of the ASE certification examination.
