Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boy Scout Explorers Series was published from 1955 to 1957 by Cupples and Leon. The series was written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson under the pen name of Don Palmer. The books follow the adventures of the boys of Explorer Post No. 21. The group's leader is George (Happy) Livingston. The group's members are Jack Hartwell, Willie Medaugh, Ken Dougherty, and Warwick Washburn. The books in this series are more exciting than the average book written by Mildred Wirt Benson and are among her strongest works. Volume 2 in particular has an exciting and exotic appeal much like the Beverly Gray books that occur in exotic locales. What is interesting is that this series could just as easily be a series for girls as a series for boys. There is nothing in the series aside from the main characters' names and the fact that they are Boy Scouts to make it different than any series for girls. This series also has far fewer references to the Boy Scouts organization as Wirt's Girl Scouts, Brownie Scouts, and Dan Carter Cub Scout books have to each related organization.Cupples and Leon apparently numbered the volumes in the series in the wrong order. The beginning of volume 1 mentions a recent trip to Peru in which the group searches for a missing explorer. The trip to Peru to search for the explorer occurs in volume 2 of the series. Furthermore, page 21 of volume 3 mentions "the exciting adventure trips to South America which have been described in The Boy Scout Explorers at Treasure Mountain and The Boy Explorers at Emerald Valley," mentioning the title of volume 2 before the title of volume 1. Therefore, volume 2 was intended to be volume 1 in the series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in Ladora, Iowa, Mildred “Millie” Benson had ample time to develop her imagination and sense of adventure. While still a journalism graduate student at the University of Iowa, Millie began writing for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, which published the phenomenally popular Hardy Boys series, among others. Soon, Millie was tapped for a new series starring amateur sleuth Nancy Drew, a young, independent woman not unlike Millie herself. Under the pen name Carolyn Keene, Millie wrote the first book, The Secret of the Old Clock, and twenty-two other Nancy Drew Mystery Stories. In all, Millie wrote more than a hundred novels for young people. Millie was also a journalist for the Toledo Times and the Toledo Blade. At sixty-two, she obtained her pilot’s license. Follow the clues throughout Missing Millie to discover the story of this ghostwriter, journalist, and adventurer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rediscovering Nancy Drew is a rich collection of literary memories and insightful cultural comments."--Journal of Children's Literature "Nancy, especially the Nancy of the original story, is our bright heroine, chasing down the shadows, conquering our worst fears, giving us a glimpse of our brave and better selves, proving to everybody exactly how admirable and wonderful a thing it is to be a girl. Thank you, Nancy Drew."--Nancy Pickard "Nancy Drew belongs to a moment in feminist history; it is a moment, I suggest, that we celebrate, allowing ourselves the satisfaction of praising her for what she dared and forgiving her for what she failed to undertake or understand."--Carolyn G. Heilbrun "Rediscovering Nancy Drew lights up the territory. It informs, delights, and acknowledges through love and scholarship a debt long overdue."--Dale H. Ross In 1991, women staff and faculty at the University of Iowa discovered that the pseudonymous author of the original Nancy Drew books, Carolyn Keene, was none other than Mildred Wirt Benson, the first person to earn a master's degree in journalism at Iowa. The excitement caused by their discovery led to the 1993 Nancy Drew Conference, which explored the remarkable passion for Nancy Drew that spans a wide spectrum of American society. The result: a lively collaboration of essays by and interviews with mystery writers, collectors, publishers, librarians, scholars, journalists, and fans which presents a spirited, informative, totally enjoyable tribute to the driver of that blue roadster so many readers have coveted.
