Book excerpt: While 50% of people are male, a male is not necessarily a Man. The transformation of boy-to-man does not happen by accident, but rather through a proven process by fathers, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, and mentors. In the 21st century, most American males haven't access to such character-building role models, so they founder about as soft and incomplete males. This book will show you where your own modules for manhood are missing, and help you transform yourself into a strong, patient, competent, wise, and courageous gentleman of honor.

Book excerpt: In this astonishing and at times terrifying book, acclaimed writer and political commentator Martin Dillon examines for the first time the true role of religion in the conflict in Northern Ireland. He interviewed those directly involved--terrorists like Kenny McClinton and Billy Wright and churchmen like Father Pat Buckley--finding that the terrorists were more forthcoming than the priests and ministers. Dillon charts the history of the paramilitary forces on both sides and exposes the shocking covert role of British intelligence. He finds that, ultimately, both the church and government have failed their communities, allowing men and women of violence to fill a vacuum with bigotry and violence.

In Chapter Four of the Bible, Cain kills Abel. It is the world's most famous murder. But the Bible is silent about one key detail: the weapon Cain used to kill his brother. That weapon is still lost to history. In 1932, Mitchell Siegel was killed by three gunshots to his chest. While mourning, his son dreamed of a bulletproof man and created the world's greatest hero: Superman. And like Cain's murder weapon, the gun used in this unsolved murder has never been found. Until now. Today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Cal Harper comes face-to-face with his family's greatest secret: his long-lost father, who's been shot with a gun that traces back to Mitchell Siegel's 1932 murder. But before Cal can ask a single question, he and his father are attacked by a ruthless killer tattooed with the anicent markings of Cain. And so begins the chase for the world's first murder weapon. What does Cain, history's greatest villain, have to do with Superman, the world's greatest hero? And what do two murders, committed thousands of years apart, have in common? This is the mystery at the heart of Brad Meltzer's riveting and utterly intriguing new thriller

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The black bass is not only the most popular American gamefish, fished for by millions, but is also one of the country's most iconic creatures, embodying many of the traits and virtues we like to think of as typically American. And yet, despite the hundreds of "how-to" books published on bass fishing over the years, few if any authors have stepped back to examine the bass's place in the natural world, to honor its virtues, and describe its remarkable adaptions to an ever-changing environment as it spread from its original home in the continent's middle to 49 out of the 50 states. Bass tournaments with huge cash prizes, overpowered bass boats, glitzy bass fishing programs on TV. That's what people think of when they think of bass--a heavily commercialized, over-the-top commodity involving big bucks and crowds. That the bass can also be a creature of the quiet, forgotten places, the beautiful wild places, is a story that has been drowned beneath all the bassy hype and buzz. In Summer of the Bass; My Love Affair with America’s Greatest Fish, prizewinning novelist and dedicated fly-fisher W. D. Wetherell sets out to change our views of the smallmouth and largemouth, restoring them to their status as one of the world's truly great fishes. Part natural history, part cultural investigation, part memoir, Summer of the Bass, in its whole-hearted, lyrical celebration of the bass's many virtues, gives America's greatest fish the classic is has long deserved. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A move at age ten from a Detroit suburb to Chattanooga in 1984 thrusts Anjali Enjeti into what feels like a new world replete with Confederate flags, Bible verses, and whiteness. It is here that she learns how to get her bearings as a mixed-race brown girl in the Deep South and begins to understand how identity can inspire, inform, and shape a commitment to activism. Her own evolution is a bumpy one, and along the way Enjeti, racially targeted as a child, must wrestle with her own complicity in white supremacy and bigotry as an adult. The twenty essays of her debut collection, Southbound, tackle white feminism at a national feminist organization, the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the South, voter suppression, gun violence and the gun sense movement, the whitewashing of southern literature, the 1982 racialized killing of Vincent Chin, social media’s role in political accountability, evangelical Christianity’s marriage to extremism, and the rise of nationalism worldwide. In our current era of great political strife, this timely collection by Enjeti, a journalist and organizer, paves the way for a path forward, one where identity drives coalition-building and social change.

Book excerpt: What limits, if any, should be placed on a government's efforts to spy on its citizens in the name of national security? Spying on foreigners has long been regarded as an unseemly but necessary enterprise. Spying on one's own citizens in a democracy, by contrast, has historically been subject to various forms of legal and political restraint. For most of the twentieth century these regimes were kept distinct. That position is no longer tenable. Modern threats do not respect national borders. Changes in technology make it impractical to distinguish between 'foreign' and 'local' communications. And our culture is progressively reducing the sphere of activity that citizens can reasonably expect to be kept from government eyes. The main casualty of this transformed environment will be privacy. Recent battles over privacy have been dominated by fights over warrantless electronic surveillance and CCTV; the coming years will see debates over DNA databases, data mining, and biometric identification. There will be protests and lawsuits, editorials and elections resisting these attacks on privacy. Those battles are worthy. But the war will be lost. Modern threats increasingly require that governments collect such information, governments are increasingly able to collect it, and citizens increasingly accept that they will collect it. This book proposes a move away from questions of whether governments should collect information and onto more problematic and relevant questions concerning its use. By reframing the relationship between privacy and security in the language of a social contract, mediated by a citizenry who are active participants rather than passive targets, the book offers a framework to defend freedom without sacrificing liberty.

Book excerpt: Mark Silverman grew up in the Boston underworld, under the tutelage of the Winter Hill Gang in Somerville, and the inner circle of the Boston faction of the Patriarca Mafia family. Rogue Mobster is a firsthand account of the violent Boston mob wars of the 1990s, when bodies were piling up across New England and Mark was walking a tightrope between Winter Hill and the Mafia. An amazing journey through the underworld of New England/Boston/Providence/Rhode Island/Massachusettes and the various crews of LCN & the Winter Hill Gang. Irish gangsters and Men of Respect operating in close proximity yet each respecting the other while everyone makes a dollar. This is not your, "run of the mill" tale or the same old story and names just re-arranged. "Rogue Mobster" tells the story of a young up and comer, with connections to the Irish Winter Hill Crew that can be compared to those that Henry Hill had in "Goodfellas". As a youth surrounded by top gangsters, both of Irish and Italian heritage, this half Sicilian, 1/4 Jewish and 1/4 Portugese, makes his way through the treacherous days of the New England Mafia wars; the young renegades who feel that the old regime's time has come and gone, and now want their turn running things as well as the diabolical two faced James "Whitey" Bulger and his Federal Bureau boys. Tumultous times to say the least, add into the mix the fact that the recognized leaders of LCN tap Mark to be their eyes and ears, due to his business proximity with the renegades and the fact that he himself is an up and comer, earning with both hands and enjoying himself along the way. As the saying goes, "keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer", this is a lesson that Mark always kept in mind, and it helped save him while out in the streets making a living. This is not your usual organized crime novel, it's material is refreshing and the facts/details he divulges are a change of pace from the average book. If you are a true crime fan, this is a must read, not much is published about the Winter Hill Gang so be ready for some new names and the 'usual' ones also.

Book excerpt: You may think you’re too old to run fast, but you’re not too old to run well. When the lead runner starts his final lap in a long-distance race, the starter fires his pistol for the second time. This signals the start of the gun lap—the last chance to leave it all out on the track. “Gun Lap” is for men who are running their last lap. Or maybe younger men who are looking ahead to their gun lap, but want to live the rest of their lives with purpose and strength. This is no small thing. In fact, it’s a big deal, because we only get one chance at this life. The author of the New Testament book of Hebrews agrees...wrote, “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (12:1 CSB). Perseverance. No word better describes the goal of this race…every lap…including the last one. “Gun Lap” will help you pay close attention to the strides you have left.
