In the foreword, the author recounts his first meeting with Boston Blackie in Golden Gate Park four days after the great earthquake. Blackie is caring for a group of orphaned children. The stories in this volume originally appeared in Redbook magazine between 1917 and 1919 and have been slightly revised by Boyle into chapters to take on the appearance of a novel.

The one gleam of light in the night was from the incandescent that hung above the big safe in the offices of the Muir Lumber Company. Examining the strong-box with the calmly critical eye of an expert stood Boston Blackie. He ran his hand delicately over the burnished steel, fondled the combination knobs and turned to the masked man with him who was unpacking a suit-case. "It's a good box," he said. "Let's get at it.
