Book Synopsis Tectonic Evolution, Collision, and Seismicity of Southwest Asia by : Rasoul Sorkhabi
Download or read book Tectonic Evolution, Collision, and Seismicity of Southwest Asia written by Rasoul Sorkhabi and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southwest Asia is one of the most remarkable regions on Earth in terms of active faulting and folding, large-magnitude earthquakes, volcanic landscapes, petroliferous foreland basins, historical civilizations as well as geologic outcrops that display the protracted and complex 540 m.y. stratigraphic record of Earth's Phanerozoic Era. Emerged from the birth and demise of the Paleo-Tethys and Neo-Tethys oceans, southwest Asia is currently the locus of ongoing tectonic collision between the Eurasia-Arabia continental plates. The region is characterized by the high plateaus of Iran and Anatolia fringed by the lofty ranges of Zagros, Alborz, Caucasus, Taurus, and Pontic mountains; the region also includes the strategic marine domains of the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Caspian, and Mediterranean. This 19-chapter volume, published in honor of Manuel Berberian, a preeminent geologist from the region, brings together a wealth of new data, analyses, and frontier research on the geologic evolution, collisional tectonics, active deformation, and historical and modern seismicity of key areas in southwest Asia.
Book Synopsis The Other End of the Spear by : John J. Mcgrath
Download or read book The Other End of the Spear written by John J. Mcgrath and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at several troop categories based on primary function and analyzes the ratio between these categories to develop a general historical ratio. This ratio is called the Tooth-to-Tail Ratio. McGrath's study finds that this ratio, among types of deployed US forces, has steadily declined since World War II, just as the nature of warfare itself has changed. At the same time, the percentage of deployed forces devoted to logistics functions and to base and life support functions have increased, especially with the advent of the large-scale of use of civilian contractors. This work provides a unique analysis of the size and composition of military forces as found in historical patterns. Extensively illustrated with charts, diagrams, and tables. Book Synopsis Germany's New Security Demographics by : Wenke Apt
Download or read book Germany's New Security Demographics written by Wenke Apt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military recruitment will become more difficult in times of demographic aging. The question arises whether demographic change will constrain the capacity of aging states like Germany to conduct foreign policy and pursue their national security interests. Since contemporary military operations still display a strong human element, particular scrutiny is given to the empirical analysis of the determinants of military propensity and military service among youth. An additional human capital projection until 2030 illustrates how the decline in the youth population will interact with trends in educational attainment and adolescent health to further complicate military recruitment in the future. A concluding review of recruiting practices in other NATO countries provides insight in best-practice policy options to reduce the military’s sensitivity to demographic change. Following this approach, the book gives prominence to a topic that has thus far been under-represented in the greater discussion of demographic change today, namely the demographic impact on international affairs and strategic calculations.

Book Synopsis Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering by : Jay Ameratunga
Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Synopsis Trends in Polyoxometalates Research by : Laurent Ruhlmann
Download or read book Trends in Polyoxometalates Research written by Laurent Ruhlmann and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book attempts to make available the recent developments in polyoxometalate (POM) synthesis. The focus centralises on the functionalisation of POMs with covalently organic moiety (for instance, the use of exogenous ligands such as carboxylate or bisphosphonate). It also delves into the development of lanthanide POMs, or the formation of blackberry-like assemblies. Likewise, the properties (redox properties, magnetism, etc...), and its applications (homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis and photovoltaic cell development, etc.) are also analysed. This application concerns also the catalysis of H2O oxidation, photodegradation of pollutants, and reduction of cationic metal to form original nanoparticles. The use of polyoxometalates as catalysts for biologically relevant reactions is also considered. One of the other aims of the book is to highlight some recent developments and perspectives in the domain of materials and their applications. For instance, the use of POM-organic photosensitiser hybrids can also be achieved for application in the generation of photocurrent and the development of new types of solar cells. By combining POMs with electrically active materials, a variety of applications have been explored and several examples of POM-based electronic materials are presented in this book.
