Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Book, Bath, Table, and Time: Christian Worship as Source and Resource for Youth Ministry," offers practical and proven ideas that center youth ministry in liturgy and worship, with playfulness and practicality to successfully engage the younger generation. With solid theological grounding, Fred P. Edie provides suggestions on how youth can practice the ordo, the ancient church's "ordered" life around its liturgical holy things: bath (Baptism); book (Scriptures); table (Eucharist); and calendar (the prayerful patterning of time). Through this book, youth leaders will be able to guide Christian youth to experience God's presence and take up their baptismal vocations before God and for the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith left on rocky soil withers. But faith nurtured in the good soil of Christian teaching, formation, and mentorship grows to maturity and yields thriving community. Educational ministries are so often where this happens—where the desires of the human heart are shaped toward a love for God, a love for one’s neighbor, and a love for the world. In this comprehensive guide to educational ministries in the twenty-first century, Fred Edie and Mark Lamport explore how church leaders and others involved in Christian education can nurture a robust, cruciform faith within their communities. When discussing strategies and goals, Edie and Lamport consider a range of contexts and a variety of related fields that might give insight into educational ministry: theology, pedagogy, philosophy, social science, and more. Those working with any age group—children, adolescents, and adults—will find a relevant discussion of key underlying theological themes, a guide to concrete practices, and indispensable help in navigating shifting cultural dynamics. Exceedingly practical and consistent with the teachings of the gospel, the wisdom in this book will speak to all who long to foster discipleship in their church, school, or missional community. Key Features A “Road Map” at the beginning of each chapter concisely introduces the chapter’s topic and essential themes. Sidebars throughout the text provide deeper insight into particular important or nuanced concepts. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter facilitate further reflection, especially in conversation with others. Suggestions for further reading are provided at the end of each chapter for those interested in exploring the chapter’s ideas in greater depth. Concluding the book is a series of afterwords from experts in the field of Christian educational ministries: Martyn Percy, Almeda Wright, Craig Dykstra, Kirsten Oh, Elizabeth DeGaynor, and Thomas Groome.

She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Book excerpt: This book addresses the vital role of public Christian worship in adolescent spiritual formation and shows how important youth ministry and worship ministry are to each other. Despite numerous research projects, books, articles, and resources that have been published about teenagers and about worship in recent years, the relationship between the two has been addressed only peripherally if not altogether overlooked. Drawing on his extensive experience in worship ministry and youth ministry, Eric Mathis offers insights into the worship practices of teenagers, corrects common misperceptions about worship, and critically examines four prominent worship models in current practice. Mathis invites youth pastors, worship leaders, ministerial students, and congregations to elevate the voices of young people in the worshiping community and enhance worship for all ages. The book includes a foreword by Kenda Creasy Dean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically affirming certain post-WWII constructive theologians and social theorists, After Christendom unpacks theological anomalies negatively denying the science underlying global warming, wedge issues supporting systemic racism, and certain erroneous decisions made by mainline churches and the evangelical movement. Anomalies occur when something taken for granted no longer fits current situations. The so-called mainline church and the evangelical movement have not addressed or reconstructed their theological anomalies. Caught inside cultural accommodation, the more liberal mainline church often does not recognize its historical tie to a pre-modern God, a transactional definition of the crucifixion, and Jesus’ consignment to the cross. A companion argument suggests that the evangelical movement’s inability to respond to the pre-modern depiction of God as an omnipotent, theocratic King helped provide sufficient votes for Trump’s successful presidential run. Both groups inability to face such theological anomalies rests within a belief in conservative originalism, an unwillingness to move beyond European Christendom’s earliest theological constructions. After Christendom will be of particular interest to seminary, divinity school, university, and college libraries, as well as seminary students and professors, members of college and university departments of religion, history, and political science, and ministers and church leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deadly pandemic. Civic unrest. Economic uncertainty. The years between the 2016 and 2020 Presidential Elections exposed the vulnerability of our institutions--and ourselves--like never before. In the wake of uncertainty, the authors in this volume offer wisdom to make sense of the changes brought by these past four years. Reflecting how faith and philanthropy converge, they imagine alternative economies for faith communities, academia, and nonprofits, while also marking the unshakable encounter with grief and crisis. Authors linger in the space between what was and what will be to ask: what do we leave behind, what do we bring with us, and what possibilities exist where crisis and care converge? Their words and wisdom kindle philanthropic imagination in this moment of transition and change.
