Book excerpt: "Due to its economic advantages, the use of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has increased rapidly in recent years. However, because SCC mixes typically have decreased amounts of coarse aggregate and high amounts of admixtures, industry members have expressed concerns that the bond of prestressing strand in SCC may be compromised. While the bond performance of prestressing strand in a new material such as SCC is an important topic requiring investigation, the results are only applicable if the research is completed on strands with similar bond quality as the strands used in the field. Therefore, the objectives of this research program were to investigate the transfer and development lengths of prestressing strand in SCC and also evaluate the effectiveness of two proposed bond tests in determining acceptable bond quality of strand. Transfer and development lengths of 0.5-in. diameter (12.5 mm), Grade 270 prestressing strand were evaluated using rectangular beams constructed from normal and high strength conventional concrete and SCC mixes. End slips at release and strain readings over 28 days were used to calculate transfer lengths, and development lengths were evaluated through four-point loading at varying embedment lengths. Additionally, the NASP bond test and Large Block Pullout Tests (LBPT) were evaluated with strand from three different sources to determine if one test could be considered more reliable at predicting acceptable bond. Results indicated that bond performance of SCC and conventional concrete were comparable, and that AASHTO and ACI equations for transfer and development length were generally conservative. The NASP bond test and LBPT were found to be equally valid, but the acceptance limits for both tests appear to require revisions"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Lightweight self-consolidating concrete (LWSCC) is a relatively recent advancement in concrete technology. The reduced dead load from lightweight concrete is beneficial for precast elements and for elements where dead load is a significant portion of the total load, such as prestressed bridge girders. Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a specially proportioned concrete mixture that consolidates under its own weight without the need for vibration. The combination of lightweight concrete and self-consolidating behavior provides the benefits of both. Bond of prestressing steel has been a much debated topic since the 1950s. Limited data are available on the transfer and development length of strands cast in SCC and even less for strands cast in LWSCC. The differences in material properties resulting from the lightweight coarse aggregate and mix proportioning used for LWSCC have potential to lead to longer transfer and development lengths than those for conventional concrete, which can be detrimental to shear and flexural performance. The transfer and development length equations provided in the ACI Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and AASHTO Bridge Design specifications are based on studies performed using conventional concrete. This research project examined the transfer and development length of LWSCC specimens using 0.6 in. (15.2 mm) Grade 270 prestressing strand. Four specimens were cast from each mixture consisting of a combination of expanded clay, expanded shale, or limestone aggregate and a compressive strength of 4000 psi or 6000 psi (28 MPa or 41 MPa) at prestress release. Results were compared between the mixtures, to the code equations, and to previous research. The bond performance of LWSCC with a release strength of 6000 psi (41 MPa) was very similar to normal weight SCC, the transfer lengths for both strength levels were accurately predicted by the code equations, and the measured development lengths were significantly less than those predicted.

Book excerpt: Results of an extensive experimental program conducted to determine the material, bond characteristics, and time-dependent deformations of a proposed self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixture for bridge girders are presented. This research program was completed in three phases. The first phase consisted of 15 full-scale, pretensioned SCC flexural specimens tested to evaluate their transfer and development lengths. These specimens included both single-strand and multiple-strand beams, as well as specimens designed to evaluate the so-called 'top-strand' effect. The top-strand specimens, with more than 20 inches of concrete below the strand, were tested to evaluate the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials requirement of a 30% increase in the development length when the concrete below the strand is more than 12 inches. Strand end-slip measurements, used to estimate transfer lengths, indicated the proposed SCC mixture meets ACI and AASHTO requirements. In addition, flexural tests confirmed the proposed SCC mixture also meets current code requirements for development length. The second phase was to evaluate the elastic shortening, creep, and shrinkage properties of the proposed SCC mixture for bridge girders. Four bridge girders with an inverted-T profile were used to measure these time-dependent deformations. In two of the specimens, the strands were tensioned to 75% of the ultimate tensile strength, simulating a girder at service. Strands of the other two specimens were left untensioned to evaluate shrinkage effect of the concrete alone. The shrinkage was then subtracted from the fully tensioned specimens and elastic shortening and creep were isolated after relaxation losses were calculated from code expressions. In addition, the fully tensioned specimens were used to determine transfer lengths of the prestressing strand. The final phase of the program was to record strain measurements of the actual bridge girders used in the field. Elastic shortening, creep, and shrinkage prestress losses of the proposed SCC mixture were compared with current design equations. Instrumentation of seven pretensioned girders in a five-span bridge located in Cowley County, Kansas, was used to measure time-dependent deformations. Three of these girders utilized SCC, while the other four were cast with conventional concrete.

Its unique properties can substantially reduce the labor required to pour complex or heavily reinforced structural members. Over the past decade, the American precast industry has taken significant strides to adopt SCC in commercial projects, though concern about early-age bond behavior has limited the material0́9s application in prestressed members. A keen understanding of SCC0́9s bond strength, including its impact on transfer and development lengths in prestressed members, is essential to safely implement SCC in prestressed design. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has sponsored a three-phase study exploring the bond behavior of steel strands in prestressed bridge girders. In the first phase, 56 pullout tests were conducted to compare the performance of seven-wire strands embedded in SCC and conventionally-consolidated concrete blocks. In the second phase, transfer lengths of prestressing strands in two SCC hollow box girders and two SCC I-girders were determined experimentally. In the third phase, the development length of strands in the two box girders was determined through a series of iterative flexural tests. This thesis details the three phases of the IDOT study and compares results to industry standards and requirements of the American Concrete Institute and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Results are also compared to analytical methods proposed in the literature. Additionally, a systematic method is developed to predict transfer lengths in full-scale specimens using pullout test data and finite element analysis. The proposed method may be useful when large-scale testing is impractical in terms of time or cost.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results from strand end-slip measurements and load tests on 73 pretensioned members that were fabricated at six different PCI producer member plants. Sixty-seven of these beams utilized standard production concrete mixes and placement techniques. As such, the data presented in this report are believed to be representative of standard industry practice between 2005 and 2008. This study revealed that the top-bar effect for pretensioned strands is primarily the result of a small amount of concrete above the strand, rather than a large amount of concrete below the steel. Accordingly, the findings of this investigation indicate that the current design assumptions for bond in pretensioned members are largely un-conservative for members with strands located near the top (as-cast) surface. This phenomenon can result in extremely large transfer lengths for strands located within a few inches of the top surface, including those in shallow members. In addition, the top-cast strand effect typically becomes more pronounced when concrete fluidity is increased. However, these same findings also revealed that the current design assumptions for bond were generally satisfied when strands were located deeper in the members. This was true for both flowable concrete and self-consolidating concrete mixtures.

Book excerpt: ACI 318-05 section 12.9.1 defines a minimum development length for which a prestressing strand shall be bonded. This is "intended to provide bond integrity for the strength of the member." ACI 318-05 equation 12-4 was adopted in 1963 and was based on empirical results of physical tests. In the past 40 years there have been many advances in pretension strand materials and yet equation 12-4 has not changed other than minor clerical modifications. There have been several studies to predict transfer and flexural bond lengths in prestressed concrete that determined that equation 12-4 is limited and in some cases underestimates these transfer and development lengths. This thesis is three-part: determine through a literature review of previous studies the applicability of end slip as a criteria of acceptable bond and the validity of equation 12-4, categorize techniques used to determine bond quality, and study the effects of strand diameter and effective prestress on the transfer length through a finite element analysis of a simplified model.

The goal of this research was to develop an equation that relates strand bond to concrete compressive strength at strand release (approximately 1 day of age) and at 28 days of age, and those equations are presented in this investigation. Strand bond is assessed by measuring the transfer length and development length for prestressed beams cast in the laboratory. In the U.S., strand bond is predicted using transfer length and development length equations provided by the American Concrete Institute (ACI-318) Building Code and American Association of State and Highway Transportation Official (AASHTO) LRFD Bridge Design Specifications which were developed based on the 1950ś investigations. The equations provided by both ACI and AASHTO do not address concrete strength while equations, developed in this investigation, do account for the compressive strength of concrete at release and testing time. Although there has been much research conducted in this matter, this research provides a reliability data analysis relating to transfer and development lengths of prestressed concrete beams. Unlike many of the previous programs, this research includes strands of a known quality, the largest database of test specimens, and a variety of concrete mixtures and concrete strengths. This research concludes with the development of an analytical model to predict transfer length which includes concrete strength at release with fracture propagation around the strand.
