Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bon religion claims to be the original and authentic religion of the Tibetan people, and to have been firmly established in the Land of Snows long before Buddhism was introduced in the seventh century AD. Although its adherents were gradually reduced to a minority, Bon has nevertheless continued to flourish in many areas up to the present day in Tibet, especially in the eastern and north-eastern regions where a reconstruction and renaissance is taking place, as well as within the Bon community in exile in India. The iconography of the Bon religion is presented through a series of thangkas, miniatures and bronzes from public and private collections in the West, as well as from communities within Tibet and in exile. With a few exceptions they are hitherto unpublished and date from the late fourteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. The peaceful, tutelary, protector and local deities as well as the Bon siddhas, lamas and dakinis are identified and fully described by means of excerpts from ritual or biographical texts which are translated here for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration has been a basic fact of Nepali life for centuries. Over the last thirty years, migration from Nepal has increased diaspora communities across the world. In these diverse contexts, to what extent do Nepalis reproduce their culture and pass it on to subsequent generations? How much of diaspora life is a response to social and political concerns derived from the homeland? What aspects of Nepali life and culture change? In this volume twenty-one authors address these issues through eighteen detailed case studies that tackle issues of livelihood, identity and belonging, internal conflict, and religious practice, in the UK, the USA, India, Southeast Asia, the Gulf countries, and Fiji. Throughout the volume, we see how being Nepali outside Nepal enables new categories and new kinds of identity to emerge, whether as Nepali, Gorkhali, or as a member of a particular ethnic, regional, or religious group. The common theme of Global Nepalis is the exploration of continuity, change, and conflict as new practices and identities develop in Nepali diaspora life.exponentially, leading to many new

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Accepting everything, refusing nothing through the centuries, it is the one all-embracing form of Tibetan religion," as leading Tibetan scholar David L. Snellgrove once said of Bon. This book, the first of its kind to be dedicated solely to the art of Bon religion and culture, which to this day has been overshadowed by its Buddhist counterpart, aims to explore and reveal the many hidden treasures of this so far overlooked religion. Engaging with the great scholars of the field, in particular the revered Samten G. Karmay, the reader is invited to delve into the depths of this wonderful culture. Jeff Watt, curator of the Rubin Museum of Art, enlightens the reader by differentiating between Bon and Buddhist art, which it are so often confused. The other contributors look at specific topics within Bon, including its paintings, sacred geography and its founding and therefore set the beautiful art and artifacts within their context. The purpose of this book is to inspire, and in the process to enable the reader to appreciate the beauty of Bon art while simultaneously gaining an understanding of the ethos of Bon, from the time of its founding through to the more than one million practicing Bonpo of today.

Book excerpt: The Khyung Mar Tantra presents one of the profound healing practices of the Tibetan Yungdrung Bön tradition. As part of the Father Transmission of Bön Secret Recitation teachings, the practice focuses on the Generation Stage of tantric practice-visualizing oneself as the Red Garuda, visualizing the invited Red Garuda deity, and sending the lights and energy of wisdom and compassion to all in need. While this practice is one of the primary healing practices in Bön for any condition, it is especially meant for healing sickness and other harm caused by the lu-spirits of the water. As the central practice of an enlightened Yidam deity, it not only provides physical and emotional healing, but guides practitioners toward the non-dual state of unification with the deity's enlightened mind, creating a clear path of inner awakening. This book is dense with practical insights and esoteric wisdom that will be of benefit to any practitioner. Latri Khenpo Nyima Dakpa Rinpoche is a current Master of the Bön tradition. His books include Opening the Door to Bön, which helped introduce the Bön Ngöndro teachings in the West, and The Inner Mirror, a commentary on the Fifteen-Session A-tri Dzogchen.

Book excerpt: A study of Tibetan religion. To practising bonpos, Bon simply means the true religion of Tibet, while to Tibetan Buddhists, Bon refers to the false teachings and practices that were prevalent before Buddhism became the dominant religion under the Kings. The present study resulted from a period during which the author was engaged in intense contact with practising bonpos. It consists of the translation of a seminal 450 year old transcript of a 13th century Bon manuscript, in which the entire Bon philosophy and practice is summarized. The scale and depth of his study allows

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David H. Holmberg here examines the social forms, ritual practices, and history of a western Tamang community of Himalayan Nepal. Exploring the central question of ritual complexity, Order in Paradox demonstrates how a religious system that contains Buddhist, shamanic, and sacrificial practices may be understood as a whole. Holmberg begins by recounting the history of the Tamang and reexamining the meaning of caste, tribe, and ethnicity in greater Nepal. Holmberg reveals how cultural patterns thought to be uniquely Tamang reflect this people's development of an "involuted" "tribal" form of Buddhist religious expression—an evolution he interprets as a result in part of the unification of the Nepalese state. Holmberg then offers descriptions of the culture, mythic imagination, and ritual field of the Tamang. Exploring both structural and historical dimensions of Tamang rituals, Holmberg shows how they form a system linked to a cultural logic of exchange upon which Tamang society is built. He also sheds light on the relationship between gender and ritual, considering in detail the close association between femaleness and the shamanic in Tamang culture.
