Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boll Weevil Suppression, Management, and Elimination Technology: Proceedings of a Conference, February 13-15, 1974, Memphis, Tennessee These developments spurred the cotton industry, in 1958, to appeal to Congress for an overall program of research that would adequately deal with an ever-increasing boll weevil problem. Congress directed the Secretary of Agriculture to review the situation and submit a report of research and facility needs to meet the boll weevil problem. The Office of the Secretary appointed a study group to develop the information. The study group's report made two recommendations. The first provided for increasing ongoing re search at three of the Six locations where Federal research on the boll weevil was underway. The second recommendation provided for the establishment of the Boll Weevil Research Laboratory to concentrate on new approaches to boll weevil control. In 1960, Congress appropriated the necessary funding to implement the two recommendations. The intensified joint research efforts of the cotton industry, State agricultural experiment stations, and the us. Department of Agriculture during the next 8 years resulted in the develop ment of a number of extremely promising suppression measures. These achievements prompted the National Cotton Council of America, in 1969, to appoint a special study committee on boll weevil eradication. This committee, with the help of a technical advisory group, considered actions that should be taken if and when research advanced to the stage that boll weevil eradication might be considered to be technically and operationally feasible. In a meeting of this committee and its advisory group, held on May 6, 1969, reports of progress in research suggested that suppression tech niques might already have been developed to the extent that eradication might be achieved. Therefore, the committee felt that a pilot experiment was necessary to test the various suppression measures. A special subcommittee made numerous onsite visits to various boll weevil infested areas and eventually chose an area in south Mississippi, in cluding adjoining areas of Alabama and Louisiana, for the experiment. The area was chosen because it was regarded as one of the most difficult areas in which to achieve eradication. The Pilot Boll Weevil Eradication Experiment, the largest entomological experiment ever attempted, encompassed a land area of approximately square miles, of Which approximately was planted in cotton. A Technical Guidance Committee was appointed to provide overall guidance for the conduct of the experiment and liaison with the numerous industry, State, and Federal groups involved, and to assess the results of the experiment. Funding was provided by the State of Mississippi. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Pest management has long been a problem for farmers worldwide and new techniques are continually being developed to reduce the adverse effects of pest populations. The use of areawide pest management has increased dramatically over the past decade and offers potential advantages to traditional and more localized approaches. Suppression over a broad area can reduce re-infestation of previously treated areas and the specific pest management techniques may be more effective when applied over larger areas. Providing the first comprehensive discussion of areawide pest management, this book will explore the theoretical development and implementation of techniques from a worldwide perspective. Areas covered include history and development, biological and ecological impacts and recent case studies of pest management programmes.

Book excerpt: Biological Control in Agricultural IPM Systems covers the proceedings of the 1984 symposium on Biological Control in Agricultural IPM Systems, held in the Citrus Research and Education Center of the University of Florida at Lake Alfred. The symposium summarizes the status and practical use of biological control in agricultural integrated pest management (IPM) systems in the United States. The book is organized into seven parts encompassing 31 chapters that cover the biological control of arthropods, weeds, plant pathogens, and nematodes. After briefly discussing the status and issues of biological control in IPM, the book deals with the basic principles of IPM programs and their related costs, risks, and benefits in biological control. The text also describes the compatibility of plant resistance with biological control of arthropods and the chemical mediated host or prey selection behaviors of entomophagous insects attacking herbivorous insect pests. It explains the development of microbial insecticides; the genetic improvement of insect pathogens; the use of entomogenous nematodes in cryptic and soil habitats; and the techniques for integrating the influences of natural enemies into models of crop/pest systems. The fourth part of the book focuses on the biological control of weeds. The following part considers the general concepts relating to the unique characteristics of plant diseases affecting aerial plant parts. This part also examines the biological control of soil plant pathogens in IPM systems and the use of soilborne viruses, bacteriocins, and hypovirulent strains of fungi as biological control agents. The concluding parts describe the biological control of nematodes and the status and limits to biological control in selected commodity IPM systems, such as citrus, grapes, alfalfa, cotton, and soybean. Entomologists, plant pathologists, weed scientists, nematologists, toxicologists, and economists will find this book invaluable.

Expert knowledge is generated amid the conflicts of a society and in turn supplies fuel to fire yet further change and new clashes. This essay on economic entomology is a case study on how cultural events and forces affected the creation of scientific and technical knowledge. The time period emphasized is 1945 to 1980. My initial premises for selecting relevant data for the story were ultimately not of much use. Virtually all debates about insect control since 1945 have been centered around the environmental and health hazards associated with insecticides. My first but inadequate conclusion was that the center of interest lay between those who defended the chemicals and those who advocated the use of nonchemical control methods. With this formulation of the problem, I was drawn to an analysis of how the chemical manufacturers had managed to dominate and even corrupt the work of entomological scientists, farmers, members of Congress, and regulators in the USDA and EPA. My own contribu tions to a policy study at the National Academy of Sciences were based 1 on this premise. More recently, Robert van den Bosch developed the 2 "corruption theme" in considerable detail.
