Book Synopsis The numeral system of Proto-Niger-Congo by : Konstantin Pozdniakov
Download or read book The numeral system of Proto-Niger-Congo written by Konstantin Pozdniakov and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes the reconstruction of the Proto-Niger-Congo numeral system. The emphasis is placed on providing an exhaustive account of the distribution of forms by families, groups, and branches. The big data bases used for this purpose open prospects for both working with the distribution of words that do exist and with the distribution of gaps in postulated cognates. The distribution of filled cells and gaps is a useful tool for reconstruction. Following an introduction in the first chapter, the second chapter of this book is devoted to the study of various uses of noun class markers in numeral terms. The third chapter deals with the alignment by analogy in numeral systems. Chapter 4 offers a step-by-step reconstruction of number systems of the proto-languages underlying each of the twelve major NC families, on the basis of the step-by-step-reconstruction of numerals within each family. Chapter 5 deals with the reconstruction of the Proto-Niger-Congo numeral system on the basis of the step-by-step-reconstructions offered in Chapter 4. Chapter 6 traces the history of the numerals of Proto-Niger-Congo, reconstructed in Chapter 5, in each individual family of languages.

Book Synopsis Aspires to Lofty Heights by : Ross McCallum Jones
Download or read book Aspires to Lofty Heights written by Ross McCallum Jones and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of how God took hold of an ordinary and 'lost' adolescent, redeemed him, and transformed him by the power of the Holy Spirit. Called into ministry as a Bible translator in West Africa, he analyzed and wrote the grammar of six languages and then translated the Scriptures and compiled dictionaries in all six of them. This adventurous life was lived in an Islamic context where voodoo persists, including the worship of spirits, demon possession, black magic, curses and taboos. These are described in detailed stories which will challenge your world-view. There were many hindrances to the work from Islam, communism, tropical diseases, atrocious roads, a spiritual attack resulting in complete paralysis, and his wife's devastating struggle with rheumatoid arthritis. The story documents his perseverance and desire to reach these unevangelised people groups with the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ. Over the decades, thousands of Boko people have been saved and given a new purpose in life. In addition, their lives have been improved through literacy, music, medical help, sustainable agricultural programs and support for students.

Book Synopsis Aspects of Meaning Construction by : Günter Radden
Download or read book Aspects of Meaning Construction written by Günter Radden and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-04-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meaning does not reside in linguistic units but is constructed in the minds of the language users. Meaning construction is an on-line mental activity whereby speech participants create meanings on the basis of underspecified linguistic units. The construction of meaning is guided by cognitive principles. The contributions collected in the volume focus on two types of cognitive principles guiding meaning construction: meaning construction by means of metonymy and metaphor, and meaning construction by means of mental spaces and conceptual blending. The papers in the former group survey experiential evidence of figurative meaning construction and discuss high-level metaphor and metonymy, the role of metonymy in discourse, the chaining of metonymies, metonymy as an alternative to coercion, and metaphtonymic meanings of proper names. The papers in the latter group address the issues of meaning construction prompted by personal pronouns, relative clauses, inferential constructions, “sort-of” expressions, questions, and the into-causative construction.
