Book Synopsis Thinking Through Images by : Christopher Tilley
Download or read book Thinking Through Images written by Christopher Tilley and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general self-reflexive review and critical analysis of Scandinavian rock art from the standpoint of Chris Tilley’s research in this area over the last thirty years. It offers a novel alternative theoretical perspective stressing the significance of visual narrative structure and rhythm, using musical analogies, putting particular emphasis on the embodied perception of images in a landscape context. Part I reviews the major theories and interpretative perspectives put forward to understand the images, in historical perspective, and provides a critique discussing each of the main types of motifs occurring on the rocks. Part II outlines an innovative theoretical and methodological perspective for their study stressing sequence and relationality in bodily movement from rock to rock. Part III is a detailed case study and analysis of a series of rocks from northern Bohuslän in western Sweden. The conclusions reflect on the theoretical and methodological approach being taken in relation to the disciplinary practices involved in rock art research, and its future.
Book Synopsis Material Culture and Text by : Christopher Tilley
Download or read book Material Culture and Text written by Christopher Tilley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this is the first book-length exploration of post-structuralist discourse theory in archaeology. It tackles the most basic problem of historical and archaeological analysis - the relationship between text and artefact – in an analysis of prehistoric art fusing theory and the practice of interpretation to create a fresh framework for understanding the relationship between past and present. Focusing on a collection of rock carvings from northern Sweden, the author shows how alternative conceptualizations of the material from structuralist, hermeneutic and structural-Marxist frameworks substantially alter our understanding of their meaning and significance. Engaging readers in an interpretive process, this book is for specialists in archaeology, anthropology, art history and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Spitfire's Forgotten Designer by : Mike Roussel
Download or read book Spitfire's Forgotten Designer written by Mike Roussel and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Supermarine Spitfire was a classic design, well known for its efforts in defending British shores during the Second World War. However, while Reginald Mitchell is rightly celebrated for his original design of the Spitfire, the role of Joe Smith in the development of the Spitfire is often overlooked. Smith was an integral member of the design team from the earliest days, and on Mitchell’s death in 1937 he was appointed design office manager before becoming chief designer. Smith’s dedicated leadership in the development of the Spitfire during the war, as well as his efforts on post-war jet aircraft, deserve their place in history. Charting the fascinating history of Supermarine from 1913 to 1958, when the company ceased its operations in Southampton, shortly after Joe Smith’s death in 1956, this book tells its story through the eyes of apprentices and many other members of Smith’s team. Marvellous photographs add to the sense of what it was like to work under Joe Smith at the drawing boards of one of Britain’s most famous wartime aviation manufacturers.

Book Synopsis Growing a Reader from Birth by : Diane McGuinness
Download or read book Growing a Reader from Birth written by Diane McGuinness and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2004 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From cooing in the crib to first words and sentences, to stories and the final big leap into reading and writing, Growing a Reader from Birth reviews the latest research revealing just how much infants, toddlers, and preschoolers know and can express from the early months on. In chapters that cover each year of a child's language growth, seasoned researcher Diane McGuinness links this new knowledge of how babies first perceive and produce language to her own innovative program for children's later mastery of reading. McGuinness charts how a child initially makes sense of the world of sounds and symbols and then progresses from recognizing and decoding words to developing a vocabulary and using it to become a good listener, an expert reader, and an eloquent speaker. McGuinness also underscores the important role of a child's parents in healthy language development, giving tips and pointers on how parents can best facilitate a child's learning. The past decade has been prolific in the knowledge gained about language development and the parents' pivotal role. It is incontrovertibly clear that without parents' verbal outpourings, language development cannot occur normally and may even shut down altogether. Full of fascinating insights into infant behavior, Growing a Reader from Birth not only illuminates the stages of language learning in children but also wisely counsels parents on how to maximize interactions with their children and be a positive force in nurturing their child's language from day one. Download or read book Controvertibles written by Quan Barry and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controvertibles features more of the refined brilliance and delicate lyricism of this poet, cast in a more meditative mode. Throughout, she examines cultural objects by lifting them out of their usual settings and repositioning them in front of new, disparate backdrops. Doug Flutie's famous Hail Mary pass and Rutger Hauer's role in Blade Runner are contextualized within the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Bob Beamon's world-record-setting long jump in the 1968 Olympics is slowed down and examined in the style of The Matrix's revolutionary bullet time.Samantha Smith, Richard Nixon, the Shroud of Turin, Igor Stravinsky, the largo from Handel's Xerxes, the resurrection of Lazarus, and the groundbreaking 1984 Apple Computer Super Bowl commercial are among the many disparate people and objects Barry uses to explore the multifaceted nature of existence.
