Book excerpt: Dawn’s First Blush with its sparkling glow was still shining brightly through the single dingy window of the building securely tucked away in on of Montana’s dense forests, but its warmth brought no comfort to those inside the small building. It only succeeded in chilling their hearts, as this, like other days, merely seemed to bring them closer to an unknown fate. Some of those in the small cabin had been there for over a week while others had been shoved into the building before the morning’s first blush. All but two of the captives wore disheveled street garb familiar to the homeless – threadbare clothes that had seen their better days, fingerless gloves and shoes with holes showing through the soles. There were no exceptions of this general rule other than the two men who sat shoulder to shoulder in a corner whispering in low voices. Dressed in what were once fine suits, with white shirts and silk ties, they sat huddled in bewilderment. Their fine suits now disheveled and wrinkled, the shirts no longer white and the ties strained and hanging askew around their necks, Their faces were covered with lacerations, the handiwork of the men who had overpowered them as they approached the gate leading to the camp.

Book excerpt: “[A] deliciously written account of the evolution of sex, in all of its bizarre manifestations” by a noted paleontologist—"Read, blush, and enjoy!” (Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs, and Steel). We all know about the birds and the bees, but what about the ancient placoderm fishes and the dinosaurs? In 2008, paleontologist John A. Long and a team of researchers announced their discovery of a 380-million-year-old placoderm fish fossil, known as “the mother fish,” which revealed the earliest known example of internal fertilization. As a result, placoderms are now considered to be the first species to have had intimate sexual reproduction, or sex as we know it—sort of. Inspired by this incredible find, Long began a quest to uncover the evolutionary history of copulation and insemination. In The Dawn of the Deed, he takes readers on a lively tour through the sex lives of ancient fish and the unusual mating habits of arthropods, tortoises, and even a well-endowed Argentine Duck. Long discusses these discoveries alongside what we know about reproductive biology and evolutionary theory, using the fossil record to provide a provocative account of prehistoric sex. The Dawn of the Deed also explores fascinating revelations about animal reproduction, from homosexual penguins to monogamous seahorses to the difficulties of dinosaur romance.

Book excerpt: In this wonderfully “clever and compelling” (Kirkus Reviews) retelling of the infamous—and torrid—love affair between Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII, history collides with the present when a sizzling romance ignites in a modern-day high school. Henry Tudor’s life has been mapped out since the day he was born: student body president, valedictorian, Harvard Law School, and a stunning political career just like his father’s. But ever since the death of his brother, the pressure for Henry to be perfect has doubled. And now he’s trapped: forbidden from pursuing a life as an artist or dating any girl who isn’t Tudor-approved. Then Anne Boleyn crashes into his life. Wild, brash, and outspoken, Anne is everything Henry isn’t allowed to be—or want. But soon Anne is all he can think about. His mother, his friends, and even his girlfriend warn him away, but his desire for Anne consumes him. Henry is willing to do anything to be with her, but once they’re together, will their romance destroy them both? Inspired by the true story of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII, Anne & Henry beautifully reimagines the intensity, love, and betrayal between one of the most infamous couples of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this revised edition of Hildegard's liturgical song cycle, Barbara Newman has redone her prose translations of the songs, updated the bibliography and discography, and made other minor changes. Also included is an essay by Marianne Richert Pfau which delineates the connection between music and text in the Symphonia. Famous throughout Europe during her lifetime, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a composer and a poet, a writer on theological, scientific, and medical subjects, an abbess, and a visionary prophet. One of the very few female composers of the Middle Ages whose work has survived, Hildegard was neglected for centuries until her liturgical song cycle was rediscovered. Songs from it are now being performed regularly by early music groups, and more than twenty compact discs have been recorded.

Then take another stroll through this anthology, which highlights such a trail, and complete that desire. Along the way, youll be touched by these sensual poems, with their accumulation of apt adjectives. Included are intimate connections with a plethora of birds and mammals (wild and domestic), an assortment of blossoms and the heavens, while the sensory perceptions interpret the emotions emanating from the species involved in any given season. Imagine how the fog might cloud your vision, yet alternately enhance your hearing to the avian sentiments expressed through a fugue. Then again how, with direct eye contact, a fox might assure us of his alliance with a human visitor. Also included is an appreciative hint into the feelings of beloved pets. While observing some obvious courtships being pursued, theres the impression that things are going along just ducky. Oh, and keep your eye open for the campsite gem. Above all, this book can put you on the path for a vivacious communion with Mother Nature, and even entice you to say, Good morning to all those cheerful encounters.
