Book excerpt: Elsewhere, Within Here is an engaging look at travel across national borders--as a foreigner, a tourist, an immigrant, a refugee--in a pre- and post-9/11 world. Who is welcome where? What does it mean to feel out of place in the country you call home? When does the stranger appear in these times of dark metamorphoses? These are some of the issues addressed by the author as she examines the cultural meaning and complexities of travel, immigration, home and exile. The boundary, seen both as a material and immaterial event, is where endings pass into beginnings. Building upon themes present in he.

Book Synopsis Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam IV by : M.S. Hoogmoed
Download or read book Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam IV written by M.S. Hoogmoed and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although biological exploration in Surinam started about 300 years ago, a thorough account of the Surinam herpetofauna has not hitherto been publish ed. Several publications on the subject have been issued (see below), but none of them was comprehensive. However, there are several papers dealing with a part of the Surinam lizards. The main reason for the absence of a complete review of the Surinam lizards (and, for that matter, of the entire herpeto fauna) has been the scarcity of the material available in museum collection although some of the more common species reached museums in considerable numbers. Until about 1900 the interior of Surinam was virtually terra incognita and most collecting took place in a restricted, cultivated area along the coast and the farthest inland point reached was Berg en Dal on the Suriname River. From 1900 exploration of the interior was actively encouraged by the Dutch Government, and under the auspices of the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aard rijkskundig Genootschap several geographical expeditions explored the main river systems. Although the main purpose of these expeditions was to map the visited areas, usually the physician accompanying the expedition was entrusted also with the collecting of zoological and botanical specimens. Interesting ma terial from the interior started to reach the Dutch museums in ever increasing numbers after the late nineteen thirties when Dr. D. C. GEIJSKES arrived in Su rinam. The Surinam Expedition 1948-49 in which Dr. GElJSKES and Mr. P. H.
Download or read book Why Am I Blue? written by Kalli Dakos and published by American Psychological Association. This book was released on 2021-12-22 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blue Frog looked at his reflection in the water and asked, “Why am I blue?” The Green Frog didn't know. Dandelion had no answer. And Fish? No idea either! Being different from one’s peers can be hard. We all want to be part of a group and to be accepted and loved by others. We might struggle with whether to embrace our differences or hide them in order to fit in. In this story, the Blue Frog wonders why he is blue, and not green like other frogs. He feels confused, sad, and different, and seeks to answer the question “why am I blue?” Eventually hearing a simple, but profound explanation, the Blue Frog begins to embrace his blueness and accept being different than his friends. Includes a Note to Parents and Caregivers by Gayle E. Pitman, PhD, that discusses how children experience differences throughout childhood and how adults can guide children toward an understanding and acceptance of differences and similarities they will face throughout life. From the Note to Parents and Caregivers: Some differences can be a source of positive self-esteem for children. They could have qualities that are cool, quirky, and respected by others. For example, if a child is especially talented at something, like art, music, or athletics, they might feel respected by their peers, even though their talent sets them apart to some extent. Moreover, if this quality is nurtured by family members and teachers and through extracurricular activities, these differences can enhance self-esteem in a powerful way. Differences don’t always work that way, though. Some differences involve characteristics like disability, gender identity, or race, qualities that have been used throughout history to justify inequality and mistreatment. If differences aren’t valued by the individual or by society, a few things can happen...
Book Synopsis The Frog Who Croaked Blue by : Jamie Ward
Download or read book The Frog Who Croaked Blue written by Jamie Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As little Edgar Curtis lay on his porch, he remarked to his mother how the noise of the rifle range was black, the chirp of the cricket was red, and the croak of the frog was bluish. Edgar, like many other people, has synesthesia - a fascinating condition in which music can have color, words can have taste, and time and numbers float through space. Everyone will be closely acquainted with at least 6 or 7 people who have synesthesia but you may not yet know who they are because, until very recently, synesthesia was largely hidden and unknown. Now science is uncovering its secrets and the findings are leading to a radical rethink about how our senses are organized. In this timely and thought-provoking book, Jamie Ward argues that sensory mixing is the norm even though only a few of us cross the barrier into the realms of synesthesia. How is it possible to experience color when no color is there? Why do some people experience touch when they see someone else being touched? Can blind people be made to see again by using their other senses? Why do scientists no longer believe that there are five senses? How does the food industry exploit the links that exist between our senses? Does synesthesia have a function? The Frog Who Croaked Blue explores all these questions in a lucid and entertaining way, making it fascinating reading for anyone with an interest in the intriguing workings of the mind.
