Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides English teachers with 50 cohesive suggestions for embedding and extending learning in the classroom: from individual to whole-class activities, and from the energetic to the sedate, all with realistic timings for each. Even better, every starter and plenary contains an 'ideas generator', making it easily-adaptable for the whole ability range of your class and keeping it fresh for you to use, and there are PowerPoints, task sheets and other time-saving resources online. The book covers the whole spectrum of topics that every English teacher needs to cover, and makes use of music, drama, maps, charts and practical props. Some ideas involve students managing and monitoring each other; some use all the senses; others involve creative thinking and where practical and appropriate, the content is embedded in the real world so that students can immediately see the wider application of their efforts. The 'teacher tips' section offers guidance on how to deliver the idea to get the best results based on years of trial and error by the author.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Children’s Literature Association Book Award This book visits a range of textual forms including diary, novel, and picturebook to explore the relationship between second-generation memory and contemporary children’s literature. Ulanowicz argues that second-generation memory — informed by intimate family relationships, textual mediation, and technology — is characterized by vicarious, rather than direct, experience of the past. As such, children’s literature is particularly well-suited to the representation of second-generation memory, insofar as children’s fiction is particularly invested in the transmission and reproduction of cultural memory, and its form promotes the formation of various complex intergenerational relationships. Further, children’s books that depict second-generation memory have the potential to challenge conventional Western notions of selfhood and ethics. This study shows how novels such as Lois Lowry’s The Giver (1993) and Judy Blume’s Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself (1977) — both of which feature protagonists who adapt their elders’ memories into their own mnemonic repertoires — implicitly reject Cartesian notions of the unified subject in favor of a view of identity as always-already social, relational, and dynamic in character. This book not only questions how and why second-generation memory is represented in books for young people, but whether such representations of memory might be considered 'radical' or 'conservative'. Together, these analyses address a topic that has not been explored fully within the fields of children’s literature, trauma and memory studies, and Holocaust studies.

Book excerpt: "From the late 1920s through the early 1950s, photographer George Platt Lynes, painter Paul Cadmus, and critic Lincoln Kirstein helped to create a new aesthetic and redefine the institutions of the American art world. With an overlapping circle of friends, lovers, collaborators, and models, Platt Lynes, Cadmus, and Kirstein created a world of gay aesthetics and desire in art that was astonishing at the time and remarkable even today. Through hours of conversation with surviving members of their circle as well as unprecedented access to papers, journals, and previously unreleased photographs, David Leddick has vividly brought to life the lives and loves, connections and interconnections, and the inspirations and influences of this vanished art world. Meticulously researched, completely forthright, and lavishly illustrated, Intimate Companions is a celebration of the art, lives, and impact of this groundbreaking circle."--Back cover

Book excerpt: In 1871, a tiny nation, just four years old—it's population well below the 4 million mark—determined that it would build the world's longest railroad across empty country, much of it unexplored. This decision—bold to the point of recklessness—was to change the lives of every man, woman and child in Canada and alter the shape of the nation. Using primary sources—diaries, letters, unpublished manuscripts, public documents and newspapers—Pierre Berton has reconstructed the incredible decade of the 1870s, when Canadians of every stripe—contractors, politicians, financiers, surveyors, workingmen, journalists and entrepreneurs—fought for the railway, or against it. The National Dream is above all else the story of people. It is the story of George McMullen, the brash young promoter who tried to blackmail the Prime Minister; of Marcus Smith, the crusty surveyor, so suspicious of authority he thought the Governor General was speculating in railway lands; of Sanford Fleming, the great engineer who invented Standard Time but who couldn't make up his mind about the best route for the railway. All these figures, and dozens more, including the political leaders of the era, come to life with all their human ambitions and failings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with the understanding that, in addition to its aesthetic qualities, Asian art and material artifacts are expressive of cultural realities and constitute a 'visible language' with messages that can be read, interpreted, and analyzed. Asian art and artifacts are understood in their contexts, as 'windows' into cultures, and as such can be used as a powerful pedagogical tool in many academic disciplines. The book includes essays by scholars of Asian art, philosophy, anthropology, and religion that focus on objects held in ASIANetwork schools. The ASIANetwork collections are reflective of Asian societies, historical and religious environments, political positions, and economic conditions. The art objects and artifacts were discovered sometimes in storage and were sometimes poorly understood and variously described as fine art, curiosities, souvenirs, and markers of events in a school's history. The chapter authors tell the stories of the collections, and the collections themselves tell stories of the collectors. This volume is intended for use in many disciplines, and its interpretive structures are adaptable to other examples of art and artifacts in other colleges, universities, and museums. An online database of some 2000 art objects held in the ASIANetwork schools' collections supplements this book.
