Book excerpt: “In the coming year,” she said, hoisting her blindingly clean and gleaming glass into the air, “may half of all your dreams come true.” “Mom,” I said to her, “isn’t that kind of pathetic?” “Well, it’s realistic.” It’s her thirty-sixth birthday, and she really thought things would be different this year—that she’d have figured out men and how to get along with her narcissistic parents enough to survive a birthday celebration. But nothing’s changed. Her disappointing day is capped off by the delivery of a huge bouquet of flowers from Carl, with whom she has recently, and bitterly, split. A gesture of reconciliation? Of passive aggression? She’s too unhinged to tell. It’s My F---ing Birthday unfolds in seven state-of-my-life addresses this hapless high school art teacher writes to herself on consecutive birthdays, as she is determined to break the patterns of behavior that are keeping her down. Her objective: to avoid making the same mistakes over and over and start making some new ones. Through seven outrageously funny years of needling parents, self-absorbed boyfriends, riots, O.J., and Monica—and bigger and bigger bouquets from Carl—she navigates a circuitous (and ultimately successful) route to happiness in a world where everything seems to conspire to the contrary. What I Learned This Year That I Need to Remember 1. No more taking the bait from Mom. Even if the fight becomes about not taking the bait. 2. No more dwelling in the past. 3. Try much harder to continue being a vegetarian. This will limit the restaurants the folks can take me to. 4. No more trying to decode the flowers from Carl. If he sends them again, just think of them as a fun, free thing, like a little sample box of cereal or detergent that suddenly appears in the mailbox. 5. Don’t make a big deal out of the fact that there were no guys this year. Perhaps that’s a better thing than continuing to get involved with guys who exhibit behavior from the beginning that indicates the whole thing is completely hopeless. So try to remember the above as a coping strategy when I am so crazed with horniness that I want to throw myself off a building. 6. No more mumbo jumbo. This means no more calling 900 astrology numbers listed at the end of horoscopes in women’s magazines to find out my love forecast. And no more going to psychics, no matter how dicey things get.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One hundred years after his death in 1910. Lev Nikolaevich Leo Tolstoy continues to be regarded as one of the world's greatest writers. Historically, little attention has been paid to his wife, Sofia Andreevna Tolstaya. Acting in the capacity of literary assistant, translator, transcriber and editor, she played an important role in the development of her husband's career. Her memoirs which she entitled My Life - lay dormant for almost a century. Now the book's first-time-ever appearance in Russia is complemented by an unabridged and annotated English translation." "Tolstaya paints an intimate and honest portrait of her husband's character, setting forth new details about his life to which she alone was privy. She describes her extensive correspondence with many prominent figures in Russian and Western society, making My Life a unique account of late-19th- and early-20th-century Russia, with its cast of characters ranging from peasants to the Tsar himself. Her engaging narrative reveals not only her significant contributions to her husband's work but also her considerable talent as an author in her own right."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we hear Parimies (Greek for proverbs and sayings) we often say I remember my grandmother saying that, but we probably never fully captured the power and depth of these words. Even though the young generations of migrants of the diaspora may have been exposed to the language of the Parimies by their parents and grandparents, the beauty and strength of the messages, was only vaguely understood as the next generations experienced a language barrier which prevented full comprehension and appreciation of these proverbs. During my childhood, Parimies comprised a rich part of my parents and grandparents vocabulary who often conveyed messages to us through the powerful tool of these proverbs. The wisdom, philosophy and logic of the Parimies fascinated me as a young boy. I made a promise to myself that one day I would present these ancient gems in a way which I hope will ignite a spark of inspiration to be carried through to future generations. Well, this is what this book is all about. I have stayed true to my goal and after four years of research and hard work, I put before you every aspect of the fascinating world of the Parimies . I hope that the humour and sadness of the stories used as examples (mainly true stories from my own life experience) will resonate with you dear reader and give you an insight of the richness of the Greek /Cypriot culture family values and life in general. Its the kind of book that you will come back to from time to time and I truly hope that it will find a very special place in your personal library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second part of the authors autobiography, and it begins where the fi rst volume Where Is Happily Ever After? ended, at New Years 1980. This is a marriage in terrible trouble and there is very little time to heal it since the author is scheduled to leave soon to attend Air Force Offi cers Training School in Texas, nearly a thousand miles west of where his family is currently living. Several crises arise in a short period of months that change the course of their lives forever. The story expands to many different locales around the world and adds many characters as situations evolve. Faithful to his search, the author continues to seek the elusive happily ever after life that he has always wanted. You military buffs will love the aviation aspects of the story; the emotional side goes from ultimate highs to extreme lows and youll fi nd yourself deeply involved with this rollercoaster ride. Live this life as the author did through the fi rst six years of the 1980s; youll be glad you did as you work towards the conclusion in the next volume of this story, Paradise Found...at long last! Extensively illustrated with hundreds of photographs that take you around the world, you will watch this story develop over the next six years. If you lived through the 1980s, you will surely relate to this story. If you were too young to remember those times, the story will fascinate you and hold your interest as it is timeless in its energy and emotions. Will happily ever after and love that lasts ever become a reality? Come along on this journey and see for yourself.
