Book excerpt: There are great differences between the oral use of figurative language and its written use. Nevertheless, the only separately published textbook for figurative language is almost entirely concerned with oral figurative language, offering such examples as "you have a heart of stone" or "you make my blood boil." Much, if not most, oral language consists of long, repetitious portions of cliche and platitude, and not surprisingly, the figurative language used follows the same pattern. Writing teachers generally ask their students not to use cliches and platitudes, even though they may (mistakenly, I think) advise students to "write like you speak."

Book excerpt: I’ve written a number of books about legendary beings such as Bigfoot, Dragons, Thunderbirds, Sea Monsters, Giants, and more. I also wrote a book titled “The Mythical People of Ireland” which covered the Tuatha Da Danann, Druids, and Leprechaun elves. The information I found for that book caused me to become more curious about the little people generally. There are legends of the Little People all over the world. Even more interesting is that a race of very small people who were close to three feet tall were uncovered recently in Indonesia. This race is called the Flores Man and was of a similar size to the beings in many of the legends of the little people. This find is amazing because none of the other legendary beings have confirmed evidence of those little people in archeological sites. These findings add a lot of credibility to those old legends. In this book we cover these little beings from different areas of the world. This includes where they came from, stories about them possibly coming from different dimensions, and stories about sightings of them. Hope you enjoy this adventure into what seems like it might be a real race of intelligent legends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Langston Cane V is thirty-eight, divorced and working as a government speechwriter, until he’s fired for sabotaging the minister’s speech. It seems the perfect time for Langston, the son of a white mother and prominent black father, to embark on a quest for his family’s past--and his own sense of self. Any Known Blood follows five generations of an African-Canadian-American family in a compelling story that slips effortlessly from the slave trade of 19th-century Virginia to the modern, predominantly white suburbs of Oakville, Ontario--once a final stop on the Underground Railroad. By turns elegant and sensuous, wry and witty, Any Known Blood is an engrossing tale about one man’s attempt to find himself through unearthing and giving voice to those who came before him.

Book excerpt: From the co-author of the New York Times–bestselling novelization of The Shape of Water comes the blood-curdling story of a Halloween night where trick-or-treat becomes life-or-death In a ruined house at the end of Yellow Street, an angry outcast hatches a scheme to take revenge for all the wrongs he has suffered. With the help of three alienated kids, he plans to hide razor blades, poison, and broken glass in Halloween candy, maiming or killing dozens of innocent children. But as the clock ticks closer to sundown, will one of his helpers—an innocent himself, in his own streetwise way—carry out or defeat the plan? Told from the child’s point of view, in a voice as unforgettable as A Clockwork Orange, Kraus’ novel is at once frightening and emotional, thought-provoking and laugh-out-loud funny. It’ll make you rethink your concepts of family, loyalty, and justice—and will leave you double-checking the wrappers on your Halloween candy for the rest of your days. “A Stephen King tale told by a pidgin Artful Dodger, it’s a twisted little miracle with a sneaking, beating heart.” —Megan Abbott, New York Times–bestselling author of Give Me Your Hand

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "THE VIRGINIAN - A Horseman of the Plains (Western Classic)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This classic describes the life of a cowboy who is a natural aristocrat, set against a highly mythologized version of the Johnson County War and taking the side of the large land owners. The Virginian paved the way for many more westerns by such authors as Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, and several others. Owen Wister (1860-1938) was an American writer and "father" of western fiction. When he started writing, he naturally inclined towards fiction set on the western frontier. Wister's most famous work remains the novel The Virginian.
